Community Call: Episode Six

Published Thursday, March 13, 2008 2:00 PM by Sam

A little update on the status of Video Diary 5 and 6 plus a brand new community call!

You'll be happy to know that Lionhead Video Diary Episode Five is finished and gone out for submission to all the appropriate channels. It takes a while to get these things distributed but at least now you all know it's coming! I'm not going to make the same mistake as last time by giving you a date, but I'm hoping it'll be out in the next few weeks (read: this month) but am not counting my chickens just yet. These things take time!

What can you expect from video diary five? Well there will be a few bits of new information, not a lot of new visuals, but also some nice behind-the-scenes stuff from GDC which you won't be able to see anywhere else... I didn't spend a tremendous amount of time on the pre-production of this one, simply because a lot of other (web and video) things were happening at the time. And so for that reason I'm not going to reveal what it's about, you'll see when it gets released and hopefully appreciate it for the few bits of new information.

However, I'll make up for all of this in Lionhead Video Diary Episode Six which will be Fable 2 heavy! The subject will be Art and Heroes in Fable 2 where we take a look at the art department and what goes into creating the visuals (and animations) of Fable 2. Plus, and this is probably the most interesting bit for our community; the Fable 2 Hero. His looks, customization options, morphs, abilities and skills, these things should be of interest to anyone anticipating Fable 2. Which brings me onto the next Community Call; we're looking for your questions for Episode Six! Feel free to post questions about the Art and / or Hero in Fable 2 in the comments.

I'll leave you with two new pieces of concept art from Fable 2. I'm not in a position to use the word which would describe these characters, but I think you'll find it's a nice follow up from some earlier concept art. This one is for all the girls, gaymers (+me) or male gamers who just feel adventurous!

Community Call: Post Your Questions about the Art and Hero in Fable 2 for Lionhead Video Diary Six.

Here's a question for episode 6:

How do you determine what a hero should move like if he's going to be the avatar of many a different gamer with each their own opinion on how their hero should move?

Questions for episode 6:

In how many parts will the armor or the hero splitt up? Helmet, Gloves, Shirt, Pants and Boots like in F1, or will you change something in that direction (Shoulders? Buckets? Belts? Or less options?).

Will ther be unique amors, with unique looks?

Question about the Hero:
Will we see any new kind of character customization compared to Fable: The Lost Chapters (ie. ability to choose hair color, skin color, facial attributes, etc.).

Question about the Art:
Looking at the recent concept arts of people posing as prostitutes I was wondering how Lionhead is going to handle the subject of sex in-game. Will it be funny, serious, romantic or have a very minor focus (like in the first Fable).

Will the Hero/ Heroine be able to interact more deeply with 'regular' NPCs than in Fable and The Lost Chapters?  If so, how will this be achieved?  Most dialogue in Fable left the Hero as active in conversation as a mute who clould only sign 'yes' or 'no', and even then, only in a few situations.

How do you come up with ideas, and designs for a hero or a creature.

How long does it take to animate

Will all of the extreme morphs look as G o o d [Good] as the one in the trailer and are they reversable.

Will we be able to make our own custom tatoos again? Maybe post them on a website for others to use?

Will it be possible to imbue any of armor parts?
Like, put this stone into leggins part = +10% movement, this one in chest = hp + 200 or smth like that.
Will it be possible for a hero to become mad? I mean, mental ill - in unique way for each gameplay style - E v i l [Evil] or G o o d [Good].
What about any of F1 relations? For the instance, 'this is a meadow of wispers, some people say that there is a sicret passage underneath', so player will be able to explore it and discover a special F1 artifact.
Will my foes escape? Like, this bandit has ran away, that wasnt finished properly, so now they are cooperating and aiming to slice heroes throat.
What if I hit my child? Will it be the one with an Edips complex?

What about anything, that is really fresh, new, interesting, non-cliche?

Do we have a say in hair colour, or is their some sort of hair dye we could use for when our character turns grey?

also can the charcter be built like a brick s**t house if we give him high physique like in the first fable (because beign a big guy with beserk was awsome)

finally I don't know if this applies to the hero/heroine but I'll give it a shot, how many kids can we have with one husband/wife because I mean could we eventually buy a castle and hae a single wife and about 10 kids running around it, and jsut how fast do the kids grow up (if ever).

Question about indepth customization:

in fable 1/tlc we had a few sets of armour/tattoes/hairstyles and basic morphs.

1 In fable 2 we get to be male or female, now since a dev confirmed it wont be like oblivion where its a menu then how do we choose if were male or female.

2 I've been looking at the variations of heroes you guys have used in demo's and find them looking really shexy, now this question has been floating around nearly since fable 2 was confirmed I think it deserves to be looked and regarded.
"will the clothes be customizable, such as tanning(changing colour) of your clothes shortening/lengthening them. how deep will the custom use be avaible able to the player is it a simple thing? or will all charecters clothes be different.? "

3 has albion disregarded metal armour? Has it moved completely on to leather?

4 how will the hero spend his exp points, the guild is destroyed so the platform is not available. (also wtf is up with the guild being destroyed in the fire, have you guys ignored tlcs story line?)

5 will the hero be able to create his/her onw weapons? If so think about naming the weapon, upgrading it, etc.

6 the art is great, I'm curious though about the lizard type creature what is it?

7 will the hero be able to own the arena and run it how he/she see's fit? If the arena is not in it why not!

8 how will we travel now that teleportation is gone and the world is 10X bigger and we have no mounts? Is it like oblivion just fast travel, could we have ships but skip the voyage like the lost bay quest in tlc. :/ travel on caravans with traders?

9 finally a little bit off-topic but what the hey- we know hobbes are back in, we assume balverines are back in, but are the minions back and more importatnly now that jack is dead do the bowerstone guards control them again?

We know about Gollum like heroes, etc. but what causes them? What is the relationship between morphs and the different alignments, scales and whatnot... for example will corruption cause you to become like Gollum or it is the G o o d [Good] and E v i l [Evil] scale that causes it? Or is it both? Do they work in parallel to each other? Are they separate or connected?

What kind of actions are part of these morphs? What gives you G o o d [Good] points and what gives purity points? Working hard, killing people, eating too much... how do you categorize these?

I count this as part of hero's abilities, so, how about the usability aspects of magic use... you got one button, right, how do give player enough control? How can they choose what spell they're going to do?

Initial customization of the hero... two roots or more?

And just to bump stomp's question... Smily [:)] tanning, in or out?

Mostly just the typical questions:

1.) Have you gone to the same extreme with morphs as you did in the first Fable game or will extreme alignments have a more suttle effect?

2.) Are you able to customize the genetic appearance of the hero? (things like facial structure)  Or will everyone start out with the same male/female?

3.) Ranged skills?  Magic and melee seem easy enough to imagine but what can you upgrade with ranged besides accuracy?

4.) So what exactly does a hero like ours do when his health hits zero?  Goes back to the nearest town, passes out, get scarred?  (can't blame me for trying Stick out tongue [:P])

I'll try to stick to topics that you've mentioned

Art ~Can you create your own art from screen captures. I'd love to decorate my house with Pictures of my Slaying Certian beasts. "Look son there's daddy killing the Great Balverine of Darkwood"

Heroes ~ How Many Heroes can Play at the same time (Couch Co-op)

Looks~ Will we be able to Custom design the heroes face (please say no)

Customization options ~ We know about Gender I'll jump on the band wagon and ask about race

Morphs ~ Will there be morphs for Cruelty/Kindness and Rich/Poor

Abilities ~ When you say abilities I think magic. I'm pretty sure you're no talking about that so I'll drop it.

Skills ~ Will there be secondary skills

My questions are all based apon the hero in Fable 2.

I'd like to see how the morphs of G o o d [Good]/E v i l [Evil], cruelty/kindness, rich/poor, will/strength/skill effect the player physically and how they will look when in the extreme form. Also how the different combinations of the alignments will effect the world around the hero.

Maybe a small introduction into will powers in Fable 2, we've all speculated for so long how magic will function with the one button combat feature and contextual combat environments!

Jobs...How will they function? Will they be mindless repetative and menial tasks or something much more deep and involving?

The story (dur...). We know close to nothing about it! Cruel baddie Lucien wants to build his cloud piercing Spire, why? Our hero has a sister named Rose, does that mean we have long lost parents to find in Fable 2? Who is the hooded girl with the fourtune teller from the teaser? What went on in the past five hundred years of Albion's history? A little more revealing of Fable 2's story couldn't hurt could it?

In any case I'm really looking forward to Ep.5. And Ep.6 even more so!

How will the hero(ine) in fable 2 relate back to the hero in Fable 1? Will there be ancient stories of how a hero 500 years ago killed the white Balverine or something like that? Also, will there be more secret passages and ancient sanctuaries where you can find ancient weapon and armour like in F1? Will you still have to seek out the demon doors to collect new artifacts?

Also, how does the use of guns interfere with the use of swords because from the previous game trailers i watched, the guns seemed much more effective (one shot, one kill) than the swords, so, if that is true, then wouldn't it be unfair if you were trying to kill someone who had a gun meanwhile you only had a sword? Will there be equal advantages and disadvantages to using either weapon.

For online play which I am not sure is true, but, will it be something like World Of Warcraft, where your character can raom throughout the map with friends from around the world, and create your own quilds and beat quests together, and maybe even challange other guilds of heros(ines).

This expands a bit on a question already posed about aging. Will age work the same as it did in Fable/TLC(both mechanically and visually)? Also (this is the only thing that actually bothered me about aging in Fable), will your spouse and those around you age as well? Being 60+ and having a wife still looking like the day I married her while we were 20ish, while enviable to real life circumstances, was a bit annoying. I had heard something to the extent that your child might have an age cap and that the story takes place over 50 game years. Will the aging process just stop after the(supposed) 50 years of the story?

I kind of wish diary 4 went into more detail about the free roaming aspect of fable 2, but are the 10-11 so odd regions all self contained, meaning you have to load between them, or is the traveling seamless?

Also, does the hero's appearance have any substantial simulation effects?  (general example)in the original fable, there was the man by bowerstone dock that made you wear all these ridiculous facial hairstyles so that you could "marry his daughter", will this be expanded on, say in terms of being able to(or restricted from) marrying certain people, buying certain property, or taking certain quests?

This is all apart from alignment (G o o d [Good]/E v i l [Evil]/nobility/corruption/cruel/kind), i just mean in terms of hair color, eye color, make up, jewelery?  Even weapons and clothing?

To what extent can the hero interact with the environment? simple things like can he/she sit down on chairs or benches, or pick a flower rather than buying one?

And I also wondered about the hero's clothes, like in the first Fable the hero could, if you wanted him to wear a dress, and all the other female clothes to go with it, does that apply this time? can the female hero's wear men's shirts, that will look big and baggy like a real man's shirt would? or will there be unisex clothes that morph to fit the hero, like "Oblivion's" I'd prefer to be a female hero who could wear men's trousers rather than choosing to wear a pair of trousers that I'd picked up only to have them change to hot pants or whatever else the developers thought more "suitable" for the female form and vice versa if a male hero was to pick up a skirt and try it on..

Will all the different enemies get a badass makeover like the hobbes did. Id love to see how you could make balverines look cooler.

Will there be a character customization screen at the begining of the game? And if so to what extant can you customize.

Question for video diary 6:

With the talk about not only a G o o d [Good] vs E v i l [Evil] scale but also poor vs rich and pure vs corrupt how many of these "scales" are there? And how do they interact?

For example will a rich G o o d [Good] person and an E v i l [Evil] rich person share the same "rich" part of their character morph? Or will being G o o d [Good] and rich compared to E v i l [Evil] and rich make you look completely different?

Also appearance has always played an important part in Fable, but will the appearance of your hero effect more then simply lust and fear this time around?

Okay my biggest questions are:

1. Is co-op going to support Xbox Live? In the recent GDC videos Peter hinted at it but he didn't say one way or the other for sure which of course leads me to suspect it is something you are working on that might not make the final cut (and if it doesn't co-op will pretty much be worthless).

2. Is your character still going to be nameless and mute? This was pretty annoying in Fable. I felt like I was being talked at and commanded the whole time without being able to have much input in the conversations or events.

And finally here is a feature suggestion which is probably way to late but oh well: a tailor that allows you to select two pieces of equipment and merge them into one keeping the stats of one item and the appearance of the other. With something like that people would be able to customize their hero's look while still being able to use G o o d [Good] equipment. In Fable I liked the ninja outfit (Assassin Suit plus the Bandit Bandana), but it was pretty weak gear to use late in the game, especially in TLC.

My question is specifically about the Hero and morphing.  Throughout the original Fable if you played long enough you're character would look very similar to anyone else who played the game for a similar amount of time.  Morphing wasn't very complex and tattoos, hairstyles, and different clothing weren't enough to make character's look unique when compared to others.

Will be morphing be much more complex in Fable 2 or will it be like the original where there were only a few different morphs; Weight, Height, G o o d [Good]/E v i l [Evil], and young/old.  Will I be able to have a Truly Unique looking character in Fable 2?  Or will my co-op friends always be saying "my character looks just like yours"? Anything you can answer about morphing would be fantastic.

First of All!! Fable two already sounds/looks like the big one. I think its gonna revolutionize RPG gaming for all time. Some questions i have may sound like dumb ones, but i think they are some major gameplay inquiries.

1. Will there be horses/ other modes of transportation?
    - If there are horses, a recomendation is to have horsedrawn carriages
    - Will/ how will your dog interact with your horse?

2. Will the economy simulation ever go through certain "recessions" after major battles/ events that occur throughout the main quest?

3. If you are a male and your wife's pregnant, will you be able to experience a "delivery room" type simulation?

4. Will the actions invoked by a co-op session have permanent effects?

5. Are you able to acquire different types of businesses, or create certain businesses, and what type can you create?

6. Is there a certain "Hell" that you can visit where all of the people you have killed will be?

7. If you're wife is with you at the local pub and a girl flirts with you, will your wife go WWE upon them and kill the girl?

8. Will there be armor for the dog?

9. Can your dog learn certain spells?

10. Will the character ever expereience certain handicapps? Will the player be fighting and then suddenly get his right arm slashed off. Now he has to learn how to fight with one arm until he can learn a spell to repair his arm. Or his kid is born mentally handicapped. Will there be certain scenarios that occur.

11. My last question. Beside co-op, the dog, having kids, guns, playing as a girl, and being G o o d [Good]/E v i l [Evil], what is the biggest breakthrough in gameplay that you have created for Fable 2?

I see alot of questions about customization and gameplay (and I have a lot of my own), but I will leave that to people already concerned with wearing a cape, or the length of their hair or what powers they end up with.  (I am not saying those things are entirely trivial, just trying to REALLY find some new ground for questions.)

My question is therefore regarding a certain component we haven't heard about.  If this game takes place within the Age of Enlightenment, if you will...  How will you address expansion vs. freedom?

1.  Thunder and Whisper were the only dark-skinned people I remember in Fable, and could easily be compared in Albion to Moors (or Sacracens?) who trickled into Flanders and perhaps even England preemtive to the Crusades.  It was well known the Guild let them become (assumed) full members with high rank.  Thunder was the subject of admiration for children in Bowerstone, and Whisper led a group of light-skinned henchmen in the farm raid, so chances are the tension of race is not really a issue in the world of Albion.  Presumably, this could be because the debate over the spiritual essence is less open to intreptation and suspicion in a world where Will Users manifest their energies so freely as The Hero.  What is the tension point in the social consciousness of the NPC's and the world of Albion as a whole?

2.  The Age of Enlightenment is a dark time for many a colony and country.  Beget with revolution, political intrigue, racism, slavery, heresy, illegal trade, and bogus claims for illegitimate thrones, many people white wash history during this time.  In a game where Nobility is weighed by the way you grow your character, and independent of the morality of G o o d [Good] and E v i l [Evil], what is off limits?

3.  How do you capture the CANVAS upon which the Age of Discovery was painted, and how do the tenets of Expansionism and Hemogony demonstrate the human condition?  Without regard to race, how do you address servitude and human or humanoid property?

4. We see elements of prostitution, are we to presume there are no pimps?  What crimes are considered "capital" in Albion?  Do laws differ in different cities?  Is this the only way human as property is addressed?   Can The Hero have a servant?  Can The Hero have a plantation?

5. The Hero can have a spouse, and a home and a child, and henchmen... Can enemy highwaymen follow the Hero home and threaten his/her family?  Can you "hire" a henchman to guard on your family, or hire farmers to work your lands?  What dangers does your family face? The Hero can even become Emperor of Albion, based on comments made so far.

6. Where did Lionhead draw the line on "freedom", and why?  I ask because "Freedom" was a huge deal in the time period the game is trying to simulate.  If you fail to address that essential struggle that resulted from a shift from Religion to Science, when Dominion yieled to Representation, why choose the time period at hand?

I ask these questions for a BIG reason.  RPG's typically are very deep.  One thing that is the big challenge for games with freedom of character often have a VERY static plot.  In fact, knowing Lucien is the bad guy in the Spire, we know this has a conflict that must come to head.  Most J-RPG's are full of metaphor, symbolism, and allegory.  Will Fable 2 be full of these elements, which are the very essence of a Fable?

Now, for the not-so-deep, but important question:  One of the period elements is HERALDRY.  Can I make my own custom standard (and creed) for my hero? We know there will be XBox Live functionality in some way.  Can I represent myself, as most European, Asian, and South American familes are Heralded - by a Crest and Creed!  (A simple look at Armored Core's heraldry system will suffice, or even Rock Band's tatoo system!)

I'm just wondering about the look of the hero/ heroine.  In Fable 1/TLC, when I started to level up and get buff, my hero underwent a strange stretchy phase.  The skin got all pulled apart like it didn't fit him.  That was one of my only problems with Fable the first.  When ever I got a tatoo, it looked like something not resembling what I got later in the game.  At first the skin looked great.  How will this be different in Fable 2?  Will it be fixed, or is my hero doomed to certain stretchyness?

People have already posted my second question, so I guess its a G o o d [Good] one.  I know that you have already talked about your hero being different by how you act in the game.  Well Fable 1 was a little as well, but everyone still looked the same.  Will I be able to change my heros appearance?  Face, shape,...etc?

I also heard a lot about this before Fable1 came out, that if you were a swordsman who was rough and tumble, and were outside all day, that you would become tan and appear more barbarianish.  Yet if you were a mage and stayed in the shadows, casting spells, that you would be pale and weak.  Is this actually going to be aplied in F2?  I would love for this to be in the game, hearing about these types of features is why I couldn't wait for F1.

As always keep up the G o o d [Good] work Lionhead.  Your awesome!  Can't Wait!

I was quite interested when I heard Peter whatsisname... the english guy, talking about the emotional connection to the game, and his greatest gaming moments, and how he mentioned a scene from FF7.
My primary concern, is that the characters in Fable 2, will not be unique, and built very well on an emotional level. The reason why such a connection was felt at that point in time in FF7, is because all the characters were unique and were given an unchangable persona, so to speak. The problem with integrating this into fable, which would definately be a remarkable feat, is that it is "free", or at least that's what we've been told.
As in Fable 1, your wife, seems to be 1 of several different "models" of females that exist, and in one case an actual character (Lady Grey or something) that still isnt delved into. If it would be possible, to give a sense of uniqueness (Besides the wife talking in different accents in bed) to every npc (and more importantly your pc, which I will address) it would just be awesome.
On one of a few of the videos I saw, Peter was playing a female character, demonstrating co-op, and they came back to the home, and he mentioned something about her husband being a nag, and I'm just hoping that that would be some unique personality characteristic of that npc, and perhaps there would be many others.
Now, as many, many people have mentioned, I'm sure most of us, if not all of us feel that it would be a preferable situation in which we could have a much better master of our characters influence on others, and his appearance, than in Fable 1. For instance, as someone mentioned, many felt bossed around and having little meaning while communicating with others, with the ability to only express a couple lines of dialogue. I do hope, that this will improve upon the release of Fable 2.
Now, brightcrazystar, brought up quite a few ideas for the game, and I can't help but support his/her ideas. The idea of having such a diverse, open-ended game, where we could work our way up as a bar-owner, farmer, or even a plantation owner, or even a pimp >Big Smile [:D].
Now, lastly, Ill add to the dozens of people already asking if we can have long leather jackets, and horses... Horse-drawn carraiges.. etc. Many necesseties, of course. He did say something along the lines of "a time of long dark jackets" or something like that in one of his videos if I remember correctly.

If you guys could comment on any of these, (sorry if you already have) it would be great Smily [:)]

It would be sweet to have a sort of arena like in F1 where we could go and battle it out over and over again if we choose.  And that brings up one other thing.  In F1 I wanted to fight in the arena more than once and couldn't.  Why?  If there is an arena in F2, please let it be re-playable.

Will you have an influence on the hero's original appearance (i.e. his hair colour when he first starts off) or do we all start from the same point?

How does G o o d [Good]/E v i l [Evil] and nobility (or purity)/corruption change your character? Can you be G o o d [Good] and corrupt for instance? How will this work and look?

How many (roughly) items of clothes, hair styles, weapons, facial hair styles etc is there? How interchangeable are they - whereas with Fable you chose one garment for your torso could I wear one undershirt with another overshirt over that, with a scarf over that and a cloak on top (if you see what I'm getting at)?

Is there still armour?

What jobs/careers are there? How will these affect your hero and his appearance?

The main thing for me is seeing how heavily customisable your character is, what factors affect him/her and how they affect him/her. I really want to see the range of characters that can be created within the game and the subtleties that separate your character from any other...
