Fable 2 Development

Back from Tokyo

Published Saturday, October 11, 2008 8:48 PM by Sam

After a diet of fish guts, entrails and every-random-piece of a chicken on a stick, we made it back to Guildford from Tokyo. It's an interesting but very different show from any other show I've ever been to, also extremely confusing. It's not as big as I expected it to be, it's actually rather small in comparison. Peter did a lot of interviews and showed the game to anyone who wanted to see it, on the showfloor people were allowed to play a Japanese version of the game for 15 minutes. When Peter was talking, I did the playing, sometimes journalists wanted to play which was also fine and a couple of times we played co-op.

The Live patch still hasn't come out of certification (failed or success). Peter is super hopeful, and the team are probable nervous but also happy. I am keeping my fingers crossed and we'll keep you posted on these things!

Time for some food, it was a long flight. Luckily I slept most of the way back. It's G o o d [Good] to catch up on some of it. Back to the GMT timezone.

I feel bad for the Japanese not getting Fable until mid december. What about the people saying they have a copy of Fable 2 and that the patch was waiting? How could they download the patch if it hasn't been certified yet? I guess they lied after all.

When you want to post something (a patch or an add-on or whatever) on Xbox Live it needs to go through a certification process.  When this happens (I assume it's microsoft) tests the patch, looks over the code, and makes sure that the whole ting runs well, doesn't cause your xbox to crash, and doesn't download virus' to cripple your system.  It's like how the Dev Diaries are submitted to Microsoft about a week before they actually go up, except a little more complex.

its not a question of whether or not Microsoft will allow it, its whether or not the coding will work! But I have faith in the Lionhead team; I'm sure it'll work fine =]

oh who cares if he made a typo.. lol.  I wish I could go to Japan.  Of course I recon just like everywhere else they would probably shoot me dirty looks for being an American.  I am also interested in what the Japanese thought because in one of the latest videos on IGN for Fable 2 Peter states that he has no idea what they would think of Fable 2 and he wasn't really concerned.  He made the game for Quirky English Folks he says.  The Japanese are, in my opinion, kind of blinded by their pride in the video game industry.  I mean... they love the WII over all other consoles..  The WII is nothing but a big gimmick (im sad i ever bought one).

Glad you guys had a safe trip. Hope the showing went well. While I can't speak for Eastern gaming tastes, I do prefer a Western approach in my RPG's. Hopefully Japan opened up a bit to this style of game. That being said, I'm in a calm state of excited right now. 10 more days ladies and gentlemen. Just... 10... more... days.

Well, you guys still have about 10 days, I'm hopeful that you can make it within those  ten days. My future looks very G o o d [Good] for an Xbox 360 and Fable 2, my birthday is in a few days and I asked for Fable II LCE and after a year (WOW) I finally have enough money for a 20GB Xbox 360! I can't sleep though... That doesn't matter 'cause Fable II coming out in 10 days! Stick out tongue [:P]

Did Peter take particular pleasure from devouring the chicken on a stick? I heard in the interview he did with Major Nelson that he has a childhood fear of chickens, so I would think that he would want to cause pain to chickens from all corners of the globe. (and if anyone hasn't heard that interview, go listen to it now. It gives a bit of a hint as to what might happen if you use the Pub Game Exploits!)

Piece of advice, if you want to make a game appealing to the Japanese, you'll need to give them a few choices for character creation that might seem a tad odd by western standards.    Simply put you'll need to allow the Japanese audience to tailor their male protagonist to be feminine to the point of transvestitism, preferably with options for ridiculously spiky hair and an inexplicably mid riff exposing outfit; and as for female protagonists just put in some options to make them as obscenely cute as possible and if possible a schoolgirl outfit.

In all circumstances remember the Japanese love two things above all else in their video game characters.
1:  Sexually ambiguous male protagonists and...
2:  Cute things which happen to be unstoppable killing machines, particularly schoolgirls or Pokemon.

I discovered a user on youtube yesterday showing off his copy of Fable 2!
How is that possible? And I mean, I don't think he was an reviewer either, so how is that possible? It's so f***ng unfair!!
