Happy New Year!

Published Thursday, January 01, 2009 6:59 PM by Sam

May every day be the happiest day of the year and may the new year be the beginning of the best years to come!

While most of us will probably be coming back to the office in the following days, Woody and myself aren't back from our time in Belgium with family until next Tuesday. I sincerely hope everyone has had a safe time, with fireworks, drink (driving, don't do it) etc... The updates on the blog and site have been absent...next week normal scheduling will resume.

Happy New Years 2009!

Thanks!

Now what about an update or even just a date on the upcoming and "soon-promised" patch? You know, the one that's supposed to let us continue our games properly without constant bugs and freezing? What about the more important stuff the real consumers want and need rather than the money-engulfing "expansions"? Lack of testing made a lot of us waste a lot of our times up to this point, and this is actually considered fraud. Yeah I feel like a *** writing on these forums ranting about this stuff and saying how Lionhead committed fraud on its customers, but what I say is valid and truthful. I stopped playing right before starting the spire quest, because I decided to go back after hearing Hammer say stuff about G o o d [Good]byes. She follows me everywhere and the Captain to leave the ship is unresponsive. That's one of the many glitches that should have been set as priority for patching, but money comes first, right? Lionhead is already very busy working to sell their new expansion!

As long as there are flaws and glitches so disgusting like these ones, rental sales will go nowhere, and the news of an unworthy, glitchy game will spread like wildfire. It's already started, I know 14 people who aren't buying it because I showed them (and yes, I had them watch it with their own eyes, I didn't just explain it to them) the many obvious glitches that litters the game.

Oh, sorry, Happy New Years to keep you on your feet!

Many people who defend LH on this forum complain about posts that criticize LH or the game because the people doing it start new threads, so I have decided to use this blog post  in an effort to shield myself from some of that criticism.

Re: The original DLC announcement, the delay, LH’s reaction to delay, etc..

I would have to state on the surface the cynical Lionhead customer might deduce he is the victim of some elaborate public relations hoax…

As you may recall Fable 2 was released  in late October. I think it is great game, but unfortunately many people experienced game ending bugs, and some people complained the game was too short and the ending was anti-climatic. In addition, because of the game’s unique ability to give other players achievements the game’s replay value for some was also cut short.

By mid November, according to people posting on this board, used copies of Fable 2 were flooding the shops from people who had completed the game and run out of things to do, or they were being returned from other people that unfortunately ran into some kind of game killing bugs and didn’t want to wait any longer for a patch (and this was back in November, LOL )

The game was starting to get a negative buzz and was in danger of being lost in a sea of the other great titles that were released this past holiday season for the Xbox 360.

MS & LH needed to do something to keep Fable 2 viable for a couple of months. They needed a reason for the current owners of Fable 2 to keep the game during the crucial holiday shopping season and not return them in droves to the shops. They had to find some way to make Fable 2 stand out in one of the  most crowded holiday game line-ups in recent memory

Then, as if by magic, or as they say in the game an expert usage of will powers a “major Fable 2 announcement” was made known, but not without  a bit of controversy.

According to reports, MS even demanded that the Fable 2 announcement be delayed because they didn’t want it to over shadow the release of the new Xbox experience (NXE) Apparently the Fable 2 announcement was going to be that big

Originally the Fable 2 DLC was officially announced by MS as going to be released on 12/12/08

The announcement was surprising to say the least. Not because additional content had been announced for the game, but because of the dates involved. NXE was rolled out late November, the Fable 2 DLC announcement was a couple of days later and they were already promising new content by 12/12/08!

The announcement was a tremendous shot in the arm for Fable 2 and the Fable 2 community. Players that were done with the game and may had been inclined to return it were now going to keep the game at least until the DLC was released, new customers thinking about what games to buy during the holiday season now had an additional reason to purchase Fable 2, and even players that had finished the game and already sold it back to the shops were expressing regret and making plans to pick the game up again later for the DLC

You may even remember Fallout 3 had announced multiple download episodes or new content packages around that same time. The Fable 2 DLC announcement is just what the game needed.

With one public relations announcement, MS & LH were able to accomplish all of their goals and objectives. They were able to keep Fable 2 far more viable during the holiday shopping season then the game would have been given it’s release date in October, the negative state the game seemed to be in during the month of November, and the continued lack of a patch to address issues in the single player game during the entire month of December.

Then, right as the holiday shopping season came to a close, LH announced (one or two business days before the content is due to be released) that the DLC and patch have been delayed.

LH’s announcement about the delay and reaction to is a bit troubling as well. Here is an excerpt:

Given that, look for Knothole Island to come out this January! We’ll have more information to share after the holidays, so stay tuned! Happy gaming everyone (this is also affecting the release of the patch)

I am sorry, I read the whole statement (not just the excerpt above) and I didn’t see an apology anywhere.

It’s almost like the DLC was never really planned to come out in December at all, and LH is just happy that the charade is over. Now they can go back to working on the DLC for a possible January, February or even later release date (after all, you never know what is going to happen when dealing with potential bugs)

Of course an announcement in November about future DLC being released in February or March wouldn’t have the same effect as the announcement we were originally given.

Another factor supporting the theory that the DLC was never planned for a December release, was the LH reaction to the delay.. Paraphrasing here… “didn’t make December, see you next month”                                is a bit lacking to say the least.

As I already mentioned there was no apology for the delay whatsoever, but it also seems that now the holiday shopping season is over, LH is willing to let weeks go by and allow the Fable 2 community and continued hype for Fable 2 and the DLC to die down considerably.

If there really was a delay with the DLC and additional unforeseen issues with the single player patch, MS and LH should be moving to help keep the Fable 2 community active during the delay. These activities, contests and giveaways would not require anyone from LH working on the patch or the DLC to be involved, as most would be tasks accomplished by clerical support staff and MS.

Let’s take a look at the following existing items that LH and MS has to work with:

Free Fable 2 picture pack - Yes, most people use their avatars now for the gamer pictures, but it would be a nice gesture and requires no work and little resources from LH & MS to get accomplished. If MS & LH doesn’t want to have to pay for people to get the free content indefinitely they could do a free 48 hour weekend or something to access the content.

Free Fable 2 premium theme - This obviously provides more value than a picture pack as many people are always looking for free premium themes for the Xbox 360. Again, this requires no work and little resources from LH & MS to get accomplished. If MS & LH doesn’t want to have to pay for people to get the free content indefinitely they could do a free 48 hour weekend or something to access the content

Free Fable 2 pub games -This was a great idea, but the majority of the people who have the pub games got it for free as a pre-order bonus. Now with the Christmas holiday many people will receive Fable 2 as a gift and would have been unable to take advantage of any pre-order offer. The pub games are also very helpful in getting the full 1000 achievement points from the retail game. Again, this requires no work and little resources from LH & MS to get accomplished If MS & LH doesn’t want to have to pay for people to get the free content indefinitely they could do a free 48 hour weekend or something to access the content

Free Fable 2 LCE content codes - Yes, you can get these for free from MS but some players who just purchased the regular edition of the game don’t have them and won’t do it. Of course this provides considerable value to anyone that doesn’t already have the LCE. Again, this requires no work and little resources from LH & MS to get accomplished If MS & LH doesn’t want to have to pay for people to get the free content indefinitely they could do a free 48 hour weekend or something to access the content

Free Fable 2 Premium DLC content codes - Yes, the DLC it not even released yet, yes the DLC has just been pushed back and it’s future is uncertain, So what? This would obviously also provide considerable value to anyone waiting to pick up the DLC. Of course as this product was created to be sold to the public but has not been offered for sale yet, a mass giveaway like a free 48 hour weekend would be out of the question, but there are always additional methods of delivery.

Ideally all of items above (except the premium DLC) would have their own free weekend. The month of January could be the Fable 2 giveaway month. One weekend the free picture pack, the next weekend the free theme and so on.

If MS and LH were giving these items away for free on a limited basis during the month of January it would sure keep the Fable 2 community active and interest in the game and the DLC high.

Unfortunately because there was no apology from LH, and MS seems to be doing its best to completely ignore the issue, a massive Fable 2 giveaway during the month of January is highly unlikely.

Still, there seems like a great deal of content above that MS and LH has to work with if they would like to give something away, maybe one of those four items could be offered for a limited 48 hours.

Of course there are other ways to keep the community involved:

I see people posting asking for pub game codes all the time. Why not contests all month long for all five of the items listed above for visitors to the LH forum? After all, the people that come here and post are the real fans of the game.

Weekly contests to give these digital content items away should take place in this forum until the DLC is released. I am not talking about one winner each week but dozens, for each item of content listed. If it takes months to release the DLC, then I guess LH & MS will be giving those items away for months

This game is fortunate enough to have leader boards, use them. Top 50, or Top 100 of each board should start getting some of these items (1 only per gamer tag) every week until the DLC is released

With message board and leader board contests and possible free giveaway weekends, LH and MS should be bending over backwards as both an apology to the fans for the current state of the game and in an effort to keep the fan base engaged until the DLC is released.

Will these contests and giveaway cost LH & MS some money? Yes. So what? That’s what happens when you make promises to your customer base and you don’t deliver or release a product with unforeseen problems and fail to correct the problems within a timely manner. It’s just a cost of doing business.

Again, I would like to believe that the DLC was actually planned for a December release, but I just don’t know. Also, if the DLC just happens to get delayed again until February or possibly March, you would really have to start to wonder what the true story of the original  DLC schedule actually was.

When they release it I will get it and have a solid play through and I hope they fix some bugs. and have the wooden doors break a little more realistically. that made me laugh how they animated that.

Yeah you have some G o o d [Good] ideas. But you have to remember. The team are working hard on other things and I would rather they spent their time bug squashing and working on the DLC then do some stuff which isnt as vital.

I wish they would make pub games 5 bucks then I would buy it but I'm not paying 10 dollars just so I can unlock two books that should be in the game in the first place, and then spend another 10 on the DLC when it comes out.

I think 5 dollars or even less is more than fair due to the fact you can play the same exact games IN the game anyway. You really shouldn't have to pay in order to get all of the achievements.

In Fable II , I made the Only Universally correct choice of three options after I defeated L.  In Fable II I  sacrificed having my loving blood Sister and talented side-kick dog come back to life for resurecting all the people who died during the Spire incident only to get a dark momument in a seedy location and a slap on the back. " Boo", I say and a thumbs down.  I just did what was universally right, unselfishly as a true Overseer of his Realm.  An Overseer lives not for self in the game and out of the game. This MONUMENTAL error caused me unnecessary sadness and I would like the team to apologize to us players for their lack of creativity and sensitivity. Cosmically, One must be rewarded for their selfless greatness in games that affect the lives of so many on-liners and the creators reward was demeaning as well as insulting to the heroic Sparrow and us players that paid for the game and invest hours of real-life time playing Fable II. Right?   To me this shows the lack of creativity by the TEAM and team leader/s which wouldn't have occurred if I was called in as a consultant/advisor/designer. As creator,  I would have commanded that a magnificent Monument momentously mounted monastically be set on-top of the structure in the center of the Main Market courtyard?  Right or wrong? Did you make a mistake with the 9 in the 2009 spelling by using last years 8 while writing it out yet?  I did today with my monthly rent check.  I wrote a 9 over the 8. As far as a Happy Hew year.  I haven't  really ever enjoyed life and don't expect to since I realized all the suffering and misery planet wide at age 7.  They are not "out of site out of mind", to me.  I have burdensome empathy for the less fortunate so I take semi cool showers for penance.  Is 2009 the year of the teams.  Teams of G o o d [Good] souls verses teams of bad souls joining together in preparation for, "you know what"?  As a realist I sense Formidable days, decades ahead and this saddens me yet I will, "rise to the occasion"as usual.

I'm extremely happy for the people that had little or no bugs in the game, consider yourself lucky! For the vast majority that are screwed and can't even finish the game, I also feel the pain.

I'm not too concerned with when DLC will be out because the current game doesn't even work anyways. Honestly, this is common sense, if the base product is ass, simply fix it first before you come out with more ***. Doesn't take that much brain cells to figure that one out.

dgabourel,  I really don't think the 'vast majority' of people who've bought the game have run into game crashing bugs.   I've played through it twice and while I've run into some annoying bugs (which have kept me from buying furniture, turned my first born son into a mindless blob, and made a rescue mission overly difficult to complete) I haven't run into anything game destroying.   I'd say at most 5 to 10% of players are having the sort of problems you are experiencing; but even that low percentage amounts to thousands of paying customers who haven't received the game they paid for.

Lionhead escalated an annoying bug like the Abbot bug into game crashing problems by their own hand through their arrogant decision to deny players multiple save files.   For example if dgabourel had a few extra save slots he might be annoyed by having to revert to a prior save to get past a game crashing bug; but as it is he is outraged because to get past it the only option the game designers have left him is to start the whole damn game over again.

*SPOILERS* I myself played through the whole game a second time because I choose noble sacrifice over my dog and found the game to be too damn depressing to play without my dog.   While this was certainly a unique experience in a game and speaks to the programmer's ability to make me feel for an AI canine, I can't say that it was fun and ultimately a game (unlike a film) needs to prioritize fun before artistic expression.   That is my one great critique of Fable 2, that it places the artistic vision of the programmers before the players enjoyment.   The commentary on modern capitalism made by the mindlessly repetitive in game jobs is very clever; but its not fun.  The personal cost of moral sacrifice or excess greed imposed upon the player by the loss of their family and dog is very clever; but its not fun.  *END SPOILERS* And finally the single save system, while it serves to immerse the player in the game world also serves to greatly inconvenience the player.

I respect Lionhead's attempts to give their game emotional resonance to the player; but I think this must be done without ever inconveniencing the player or diminishing the player's fun.   In my opinion no game I've ever played has done this better than Mass Effect and I think Lionhead would be wise to consider a more significant dialogue system for Fable 3.   To Lionhead's credit the villagers in Fable 2 felt much more alive then the minor NPCs in any other RPG I can recall; but without significant dialogue choices its difficult to feel any major connection to any of them particularly my family.   The villagers work very well to make the world believable; but if you really want to involve the player we also need some more developed characters we can interact with and SPEAK with.

"Implodinggoat",

You do bring up a G o o d [Good] point. I would be far less annoyed if the option for multiple save files existed. That would be something I can deal with...I would not be heart broken if I could simply start at a previous save point rather than starting the game over, especially after I put a lot of time and planning into my current character.

My fear is to start a new game and develop a character that I feel proud of and then BAM. Can't load my file again.

I shoul've gotten the code when i pre- ordered it, so I know i should have a code. im a great fable fan, and quit halo 3 for fable 2. but havent played fable 2 for almost a month, because i'm frustrated that i'm missing an achievement and its not my fault, its a mistake on your end. I know, things didnt run smooth, and i've been waiting too long. May I please have a code? email me or send me via inbox, or my xbox live gamertag is OnPoinTT. please send me a code i waited long for the dlc and still waiting for the pub game code. I have just enough  money to put food on the table and to pay rent, and support my family, & for those who don't understand $8 isnt much, you would if you lived on your own in NY. Life doesnt come cheap. Plz help me with a code. I love fable 2, but with waiting for one code and havent recieving the pub games code, im thinking about ridding of my fable 2 cuz i should have all the achievments. thnx so much, and you've done a great job on the game itself.

Happy new year, I hope you guys are smart enough to release the patch for free, and not have to make people pay for the DLC just to get the patch to fix your broken game.

I have now experienced 4 of the game breaking bugs over 5 game saves, so please be smart, and fix the already broken game, rather then try to get more money from your fans.
