The resurrection shrine in Knothole

Published Monday, January 12, 2009 6:31 PM by Sam

There have been hundreds of people sending us emails, complaining and even threatening us because something happened to their faithful dog. Obviously I don't want to spoil the Fable II story for anyone who hasn't finished the main story yet, so I'm not going to go into the details. STOP READING NOW SPOILERS AHEAD!

A beloved editor of gaming blog Kotaku (who will not be named) even has been sending me multiple emails claiming "I am not talking to you people. You made me sacrifice my puppy for the greater G o o d [Good]."

Since the DLC Knothole Island will be hitting Xbox LIVE marketplace tomorrow, I wanted to draw the attention to the following bullet point from the site;

  • Unravel the mystical secrets of the resurrection shrine.

Now I'm not going to spoil Knothole Island for you either, so while I can't really say a thing (or the infamous PR police will hunt me down and kill me to death), I think it'd be fair to say that you won't be playing Knothole Island without a trusty friend on four legs....

Clear enough? Gna gna gna!

That's hilarious, and quite pathetic that people would start to mail, and even threaten Lionhead over THEIR choice.
I think that that's just how the game is, or at least how it's supposed to be. You make a choice, you deal with the consequences. People shouldn't nag the developers because of their choice. If the person didn't want such thing to happen, they had a choice.
And I bet that now the only thing that will be able to be resurrected will be the said "character".
Hopefully there will be something more to the shrine than simply being able to resurrect one thing.
Let's just hope that the price to resurrect something/someone is high, and not only gold, especially since gold is quite worthless nowadays.

Hmmm... so does this means the only thing lost when not choosing to be a savior or millionaire is your family, right? Maybe your dog will be like a skeleton/meaty version without skin, or ghost dog. Otherwise most people would just have chose one of the other options, PLUS they get their dog back!? People sent you an email saying they sacrificed their dog for the greater G o o d [Good], but it's not like they were going to get E v i l [Evil] (or G o o d [Good]) points for keeping it, and their family. I just think people need to learn to "accept the consequences of their actions", which happens to be one of Fable II's sales pitch slogans.

thought fable was about choices? big part of it anyway.

where is the choice? the most climatic choice of all, the end. one of the options is a complete waste now. money was a waste before, seeing there is nothing to spend it on after you own all the property. so there really is one option that has any use.

you are choosing for the player this way, not the other way around.

as surely mentioned before: there should still be some sacrifice related to that choice. if you use the resurrection shrine, whatever you res shouldn't function as well as their original life.

MRMehaha, could be hardware related.  I played Fable 2 for a month with only 1 or 2 freezes.  After I got bored, I moved onto Oblivion.  It played fine for a day then it would freeze up every 5 - 10 minutes and I'd have to reboot.  Couple days later it RROD'd.  They sent me a new console and this one is working fine with both games.

Nice way to spoil the game while saying you wouldn't. Hope that was a brain fart there.

And from the looks of it, you just nullified the end choices. Sacrifice and Greed options now mean jack and what about the ones that chose Love? Do they get something special or is it a kick in the junk to them?

Well, hopefully, there's a catch to this resurrection thing and hopefully we have a choice if we want the mutt back or not. Because honestly, I happen to enjoy Albion without the metal detector following me.

Sacrifice: Lose Everyone you love and get a statue.

Family: Get your family, sister and dog back.

Scratch the "dog" part in Family, and you still have the advantage. Choosing family doesn't become meaningless after the people get their dog back. You still get to know your sister is alive, and you have your husband/wife and child(ren) back. Sacrifice people still only get a statue and the dog.

But I agree with some. It would have been great to discover it ourselves, without the blog spoiling it. =X Maybe there is more to it that's been said, of course. Looking forward to it. Smily [:)]

I would rather LH talk with Square-Enix... and use the res' shrine on Aerith...

"In the real world things are very different. You just need to look around you. Nobody wants to die that way. People die of disease and accident. Death comes suddenly and there is no notion of G o o d [Good] or bad. It leaves, not a dramatic feeling but great emptiness. When you lose someone you loved very much you feel this big empty space and think, 'If I had known this was coming I would have done things differently.' These are the feelings I wanted to arouse in the players with Aerith's death relatively early in the game. Feelings of reality and not Hollywood."
—Yoshinori Kitase, Edge Magazine, May 2003

That was a love lost, and it meant something... LH can't match that, but they attempted it by killing off the pet, not so surprisingly, at the very end...

You can say they ruined it by giving everyone the choice to res' it right there with their wish... or you can say that that choice... would even make Mr. Yoshinori Kitase proud...

But, then belittle those that chose to save their dog? To cave in to those that made THEIR own choice? Didn't PM say that this game was about choices, where did the consequences go?

I understand that others have voiced the same, or nearly, opinion... but, it truly does merit your ear, not your attacks.

One of these days I'm going to find myself a working copy of FFVII... and relive that one moment... where the world saw the death of a game character they loved, they felt the wound created, a void that couldn't be filled by anything else.
January 12, 2009 9:17 PM

NJSpradlin said:

Pff. I'll admit that the suckers that chose the 'greater G o o d [Good]' deserve SOME reward, aside from getting a few G o o d [Good] points that don't matter because if you took the G o o d [Good] path it's full already, and getting the gratitude from a bunch of slavebots that are already crazy in love with you by that point. By the way, the greater G o o d [Good] is for suckers.
But... now there's no point to taking the love choice. And unless you want to get bumped to the G o o d [Good] end, there's no real reason to not take the E v i l [Evil] side, because atleast that gives an actual reward...
And maybe instead of making DLC, they should focus on actually fixing all the bugs. Maybe I sound so bitter because I was hit by 2 bugs in one quest, one of which I spent a few hours trying to get out of before it got fixed, and the 2nd one didn't get fixed. But to be fair, I shouldn't have a reason to be annoyed, because they should have actually spent a couple days finding/fixing the bugs in the first place.

Oh, and a side note: I didn't like Aerith. But then again, I don't like most of the characters in those games, because they almost tend to be wusses, sappy, emo, or stupid. I DID quite enjoy 12, though vaan and ashe frustrated me sometimes.

I find that pretty distasteful the people actually sent those types of emails over a virtual animal. I am new to the site, but I love fable2 and the first and directors cut. I feel the same about the dog also thats what makes fable so much fun to play. The choices u have to make and if u make a wrong choice well just like in life u have to deal with the consequences. But what I would really love to see is not so much a new fable but more add ons for this fable 2. I feel there is so much more that can be done with the game. I don't care if i'm old and gray I'll just reproduce and have the offspring carry on the new quests. Just tired of having to buy new games and starting all over from scratch after all the hard work u do to get all your things. I'd rather have the offspring and hand it down to him and let him carry on the quest's. Just wish they put out more downloads and I don't care when as long as they do. I think it makes the game even more fun come a 70 year old fart fighting lol. But really it would be nice to have a lot more quests for this game before them come out with a new one. Thats all I have to say. I love the game and everything that goes along with it.

This really, REALLY pisses me off. Unless the people who chose Love get something extra this is a GIANT slap to everyone who chose to resurrect their dog. What do we get now? Our sister back? I don't know about you but all I got was a lousy letter. And as for your family, aside from the fact that relationships are more annoying that anything else in the game you can easily choose not to get married until after you've completed the main story and therefor NOT LOSE ANYTHING.

So congrats Lionhead. Congrats of completely f**king over the ending of your game along with 2/3rds of your fanbase just to placate a bunch of whining, threatening babies.

Just to have a game like this is pretty dam cool. We could be back in the days just jumping dam barrels and chasing or running from ghost not that it wasn't cool but I think we have come along way in to days gaming. Hey lets bring back ring king and all the other games well where at it and who knows well still cry about them to nobody will ever be happy cause where given way to many choices in the vid games now a days. *** MORE SPOILERS! ***

It seems that there are two kinds of opinion on this:

1. Those whining about losing their dog.
2. Those whining about those whining about losing their dogs.

The fact remains that the 'rewards' for both sacrifice AND love were both pretty puny. So this is what's left IMO:

Even though many people chose to lose their dogs (including me), they were not made aware that it would no longer be possible to do certain significant things in the game without it. That's the key point for me. Having invested MANY hours in my character, I suddenly found that I was crippled and the only way to get around it was to start a new character. I haven't got the time or the inclination to spend another 20+ hours doing this (I have very limited Xbox time being a family man so I simply can't/won't).

So, choose to keep your dog and feel that the value of your final choice has been weakened. Choose to lose your dog and have your character crippled.

Which sounds worse to you? Hmmm.

The consequences of the final decision were not properly considered in the original release. LH have recognised that and corrected it - thank you and well done.

Besides, there is bound to be an extra reward for those who kept their dogs anyway :-)

Well, downloaded the dlc one hour ago and hmmm im done all three achievments (only onehundred?) usaully 800 will get 200 gamerscore, I will not say anything that happens except it was a wonderful four missions, but two short, and a "recycled are" turned into another map, it was nice it did give me another G o o d [Good] hour of gameplay i downloaded it and it was nice to finally go around albion in knothole with all orbs enabled and not one person was in there, The new weapons are wonderful and also provide a nice chuckle, the "king" outfit as i would call it since im older, you youngings wont get it silly whippersnappers. but im hoping for 800 points there is going to be more than one hour of gameplay, remeber im the guy who is fourth in the world on experiance, aka elder, so i am die hard on this game. but no complaints, the dog did seem to get in the way on some of the switches which caused increased time being spend to move him to get the quest done, the graphics are nice and the ending is wonderful especially with the choice you make, all i will say is if your E v i l [Evil] this would be the only time you should do your one G o o d [Good] deed, besides help barnum in westcliff. im rating the dlc at least a 7 out of ten

I thought it was a great update intill I found out that there is nothing to do after the meatearologist quest.....the island is too small, what did I pay for? Seriously, I got the same stuff other people did for free.....is there going to be something special just for the ones who spent 800 MS points? Cause I hav't seen enythin yet, sure the area was cool, and the stuff was pretty nice, but its still lacking, my friend beat it in 15 minutes without even trying. I spent an hour taking my time, the most trouble we had was with a flaw that depleted all of the economy in Albion so that way it would be hard to find common iteams that nobody uses...what gives Lion Head? I noticed that you can't play the flying axe lute, and when you have it equiped you can't play the lute, missing some sounds maybe? Where's the area, the adventure, what happened to Archon's island, and why didn't you guys bring back some of the old content? Just a thought, but maybe you guys didn't finish this either?

I've played Knothole Island for 2 hours now. Really nice. Well done.
I strongly disagree with all those complaining about whatever what.
It adds a few hours of gameplay, if you want. If you just want to follow the yellow brick road, don't look around, and won't enjoy the scenery and artwork... don't buy it. It's a great addition for those that spent a little more time playing Fable 2 than required to finish the hero quests.

Well done. Thanks. Hope enough people buy this addition so that it might be worthwile creating another.

Before I buy any DLC, I'm wondering if you can fix the problem where my game freezes a little while after when I first get to Bowerstone Market. I just got through a couple months of not being able to play the game at all. And now I get to go the the next area before it freezes. You fixed the Bowerstone Old Town bug. But now this? I've seen 1 full area since november. This is looking like a great $60 spent... you got me G o o d [Good], LH.... you got me G o o d [Good]...

I didn't understand hardly enything that tinod said, but I'll repeat myself for someone to answer the outlining question; What is is the premium pack for, and what are the future plans for Archon's island and Knothhole island?

Well I downloaded the Premium pack for 800 points and started to play, and to see if the game will play through without having to have it installed on the hard drive.
All works so far on Knothole, but when I go back to Albion, and visit stores to get some common items, the game does what it did before and freeze/lock out.
For example, I quick travel to Bloodstone, Reavers Mansion, and walk down the hill towards where the Produce stall is and the game froze on me!
Now I have the DLC on my hard drive I do not have enough space to re-install the damn game.  (It needs 6.8GB space!)
Love the game and DLC but this problem is really irritating!
And yes my disc is like new no dirt or scratches, and lens on drive is clean. No problems with other games.

I know that when I'm in Knothole island, I get short FPS drops. Its really hard to explain, but its almost like "lag". Just a glitchy FPS sometimes for me. My game is installed to my Hard Drive, could that be doing it?

loved the DLC!  already finished in one night, (after work even, so gameplay was a little short) but the novelty items along with getting my dog back made it a great time!  in case you all are looking to do more DLC, can we get one aimed at those of us who have already beaten the game?  maybe some enemies that are quite difficult despite our God-like stats and such?  just a suggestion, definitely not complaining about what was just released.  thanks for all the hard work!!

i thought that the point of Fable 2 was "For every choice, a consequence"
now you're letting people who made the choice of not saving their dog get away scot free. if i wanted to i could start again, and take the money reward, and thengo and save the dog. it sort of defeats the consequence side of the coin, and i end up with a fat stack of money into the bargain

KENZEDD said:

But you see choice and consequence can be overrode by the power of money. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I chose family just so I could finish the archaeologist quest, instead of saviour. Now that I know this I wish I could go back and choose saviour since it makes no difference in the end except a family, and frankly any second guy or girl could be your husband/wife. Of course it would be illogical to go through a whole new section of te game without your dog, which you need for treasure hunting.

Just want to say a few things. First... STOP MOANING PEOPLE!!!!! Its not all of lionhead's fault. Blame microsoft for being money grabbing gits. I finally got knothole. (Not played yet) And everyone is spoiling it. Please dont tell everyone unless they ask for it. Are lionhead brining more out? You can do so much with the fable 2 story line. Like.... Getting to meet rose again instead of a stupid letter saying she is fine. I WANT MY SISTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please please please make more quests and stuff. I love this game.

The content is great, legendary weapons are not so G o o d [Good] but the master weapons with 4 augment slots make up for it. Augments are great too, with multiple effects greatly improving the weapons. Right now i'm using the master flintlock rifle with 4 of the best augments, and it is better than any other weapon in the game just from the augments. I like the height shrink potions because I have a female character and was forced to decrease accuracy to get the right look. Now my woman is both sexy and a master of skill. One thing they missed was muscle decrease(cause nobody wants a bulky woman) and will scar removal(for people with E v i l [Evil] characters who hate it). The armor looks G o o d [Good], but it doesn't give extra protection. As for the quests, they could have been longer and the boss battle could be better too. Come on, how many trolls have we already defeated in this game? It was G o o d [Good] for a first dlc but with more time put in they could make a much better addition to Fable 2.

I agree with a few. I think it's MASSIVELY stupid for people to cry over choosing the G o o d [Good] ending and losing their dog. Um...duh. Sacrifice? You're just being childish if you whine about your own decision.

I chose Sacrifice, and though it sucks not being able to complete some quests and dig, and it feels a bit empty without G o o d [Good] ol' Fido, I understood that that had been my decision. I just restart and play E v i l [Evil] now. >=)

But I also agree that though I know you're excited, you could have held off telling us this. It would have been awesome, heart-pounding, exciting if you played in the game and were told, hey...you did this huge quest line and now you opened the 'Ressurecction' shrine. Yes...the moment I would hear that in game, I'd be all excited and thrilled I did said quests or whatever. That would have been like a cherry on a sundae. But...now we already know so no happy surprises.

The only complaints I have with Fable 2 is that it's really f***ing glitchy (where's my spouse, freezing, NPC info, Charlie's game-braking glitch, etc.), the game is too short, and that the story feels incomplete (In other words, feels as if they sold us a fraction of the game at full price). I think Knothole island should have been included in the main game (without the resurrection shrine, as it absolves you frome the feelings of guilt and regret). I would preffer a ghost dog that only appears near dig spots and at his grave on Hero Hill if you need to teach him any new abilities (I don't miss him at all during combat, as he only got in the way of my teleport). I've played through the game three times in the first month (getting everything while raising families) and haven't played much since, so I doubt this bite-sized expansion will do anything for me. I rather wait until they make enough DLC's so they can be sold in a bundle pack with patches to ALL the glitches included (Whats the point of resurrecting your family, if your wife disappears and your child is a lifeless dummy). I suggest that they concentrate on fixing the games flaws and then work on worthwhile content that contributes to the somewhat incomplete story (can't wait to see Scythe, even better if you choose to resurrect Rose).

The Knothole Island DLC is quite G o o d [Good] but the shrine thing to short i did it in about 30 mins. the new weapons are great i like the Hal's rifle which actually is the Assault rifle from halo. the knothole island knight armour changes colour if u are G o o d [Good] or E v i l [Evil], such a G o o d [Good] update to fable 2 can't wait till unlock all of the mysterious boxes so kool items in them. I actually completed the shrine thing twice with both of my charectors G o o d [Good] fun. Theres heaps of new weapons like the Electric guitar lookin one, the kool E v i l [Evil] sword (forgot the name), that wizard staff, the barbarine mace thingy, and the judge's cleaver all great weapons. the new augments a great, some have odd names my favourite one is the It's Not Luck augment it makes u do more damage, take less and get 50 gold for each kill. Keep up the G o o d [Good] work LionHead

I appreciate the whole 'for every choice a consequence' thing is kindof hit over the head by this, but to be fair to Lionhead, it makes logical business sense here - the dog was a main selling point of Fable 2: not all of those willing to live with the consequences of their final decision would be happy to fork over 800 points for the chance to go to Knothole *without* a dog.
