How to use the graphics.config file?

    There have been alot of questions about how to change the detail mainly from people that own a low end graphics card. In this tutorial I'm aiming to explain how this can be done if the options for blooming/vegetation etc. are grey in the custom detail window. Not only that, but also how the fur detail on a creature can be increased. First of all, if you have installed BW2 in the default location, find this: C:\Program Files\Lionhead Studios\Black & White 2\Data If it's installed in a different folder you can use the search facility to find the Data folder. Scroll down until you see a file called graphics.config: This is what you're looking for. Open it with NOTEPAD! When you open it you should see lots of graphics card names and numbers next to them like below: These are the original values: [CODE]; RES MINSPEC DETAIL_LEVEL ; S3 DeltaChrome 1 2 1 GammaChrome 1 1 1 ; SiS Xabre 1 1 1 ; ATI X850 3 0 3 X800 SE 2 0 2 X800 3 0 3 X700 2 0 2 X600 1 0 2 X300SE 1 1 1 X300 1 0 1 9800 2 0 2 9700 1 0 2 9600SE 1 1 1 9600 1 1 1 9550 1 2 2 9500 1 1 1 9250 1 2 1 9200 1 2 1 9100 1 2 1 8500 1 1 1 ; nVidia 7800 3 0 3 6800 2 0 3 6600 1 0 1 6200 2 1 1 5950 2 1 1 5900 2 1 1 5800 2 1 1 5700 1 2 1 5600 1 2 1 5500 1 2 1 5300 1 2 1 5200 1 2 1 GeForce3 1 2 1 GeForce4 1 1 1 ; Intel 82945G 1 2 1 What do the 3 columns mean?
      ecimal;">
    1. The resolution column means the maximum resolution the game will allow you to choose ingame. 1 - low 2- medium 3 - high
    2. The MINSPEC column is all the little things like vegetation and blooming, along with waves, etc. This is what enables all the options to be available in the custom video window ingame. 2 - lowest ( blooming, water effects, deep field effect not available ingame - all boxes gray), 1 - (low blooming and some effects are available but not all), 0 - (the best it can get, you have the option to put all the detail to maximum)
    3. Thirdly, the last column, the Detail_Level; this is what determines the fur on your creature, the contour of the people, etc. Same as resolution, 1 is lowest and 3 is the highest detail setting.
That's the graphics card configuration file explained. In conclusion, 3-0-3 is the best setting and 1-2-1 is worst Stick out tongue [:P] do now you can see where you're situated. For the low end cards that are closed to 1-2-1 it's not a G o o d [Good] idea, infact it's a very BAD idea to change them to 3-0-3. The card simply won't cope with it and the game will crash. If some of the betters ones, that still don't allow you to get the highest detail settings are changed to 3-0-3 they might overheat and cause extreme lag and a low FPS rate. Before you do any changes, do update your graphics card drivers! This can either be done from ATI or NVidia depending on who your card is manufactured by. Note: This is not supported by Lionhead! If you are thinking of buying a new graphics card but can't decide which one is better for you then simply write an enquiry in the Support forum: http://allboards.lionhead.com/forumdisplay.php?f=54 Happy gaming! Up [] keywords: Fur, grass, blooming, G o o d [Good], tutorial, graphics, setting, detail, E v i l [Evil], pictures

I just want to go ahead and say that the chance of you overheating your card are slim to none, but it would be something to keep watch at. but it WILL cause lag and low FPS rate if the card cant handle it, so if thats the case, just turn it back down. I just thought id say that cause the red lettering and overall attitude of the wording makes this sound like they risk a good chance of messing up their pc.

There's no "easy" way to turn up the AI. As I understand, it's though the various gamebalance files. And isn't in any way related to graphics.config Wink [;)] Should take a look at the modding board

Re: How to use the graphics.config file?

Question... I have an integrated ATI Radeon xpress 200 graphics card (yes, I know, pretty bad, especially when you compare it to to the rest of the computer). That doesn't seem to be in the file, so is there no way for me to change it? I really don't care about whether there are ants and blooming in my game, but they seem to be turned on by default. Is there ANY way to lower the setting other than by going into options from the main menu (which I already did and set all that stuff to the lowest)?

What's the hurry? Not too many people have the ATi Radeon X1K series, or the nVidia GeForce 7300 series/AGP 7800 series.

Hmm, all you can do is update your drivers from ati.com. From what I read, the x200 does support Pixel Shader 1.1 but it's a really low end graphics card so you can't have high expectations.
