Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

welcome writers and readers, i your Hermit am very pleased to see such a hit-off of the fable fanfic. And i would like to thank everyone for writing a fanfic you all are doing a great job. But to anyone struggling or thinking to make a fanfic, then this thread is for you. are you struggling to make a story? can you not think of a base plot line? every great story has a plot line, and a hand pick of charecters, a aim to where the story is headed. and dont forget the most important thing in your story readablity, if a person cant understand what your saying then perhaps, you should practice your english. Never fear i have the same promblem, so im sure we as a community, can help each other with building our stories whether it be spelling/grammer/plot line/charecters/describtion/aim of the story or anything else. here is my tip(ftm): for inspiration, your average writer looks at his/her surroundings or listens to people's storys of there weekend, watch films and think about it, read a book and think about it. take more notice of your surroundings and it may inspire you, brainstorm for ideas, i hope i helped you. now lets share our wisdome, to each other. help your neighbour in the boards dont think of it as someone threating your story of a story of there own but more like, to take the good out of it and use it for yours, give them help if you see something wrong. lets help each other, we as a community, can help each other with building our stories whether it be spelling/grammer/plot line/charecters/describtion/aim of the story or anything else.

I'm considering starting up an interactive story, where you the forum members can vote on the setting and circumstance that the character will face. It'd be great practice for writing all sorts of circumstance. What do you think?

Re: Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

Alrighty then, first question of the thread: When I'm writing my stories, to me it feels like im rushing through the action too quickly and not including enough detail. I don't know if it's just me typing quickly and that's what's making me think that or in fact I do rush through. Any help?

Re: Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

ah a suspect this will be a common question, ill give you my view and someone else can give theres Happy [:)] describtion is good, but to much can kill and bore, but too little can give the reader the sense of no emotion, its a hard task try and give detail, to the essentials and extra's for charectarization. you want to make a battle feel real, and actually feel your there, im not very good at this but here's a tip, read books and take notes on how the writer gives detail, or a movie and take notes on how they fight. hopefully someone can help you more i just started this thread to try and help people but i need others to join in.

It's good and thanks it's gonna help, but the writing style seems like its like something from the 19th Century lol

Re: Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

i'd say if your doing a battle sequence but it seems too quick add descriptions of the smells, sounds and emotions your characters are feeling, it seems like an obvious point but people forget and just put stuff like " Simon dodged one arrow and quickly returned fire only to get shot in the leg" add stuff about pain rushing through there body's and the scenery with out going off topic... you probably knew all that.

Re: Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

Well, congrats for putting forward this idea. Since I'm in the BW fanfic (one of the reasons I had my cyber-shotgun trying to keep all you Fablers out of there Wink [;)]) area a lot I'll be around here as well, so I'll be offering advice if anyone wants it. Of course, my own fanfics aren't perfect but you'll be pleased to know I don't always follow my own, incredibly great advice Cheeky [:cheeky:]. And now, some advice... So, don't include too much description (some is, needless to say, necessary and makes your story a lot better however), and if you need to add lots try to avoid describing the whole scene at the start of the chapter. So, instead of writing something like: "Tom sat on his Action Man bed in his room. The floor had Dr. X carpets and to his left was a chest of drawers with a computer on top, upon which was a TV and playstation." You could instead write: "Tom climbed off his bed - decorated with covers of his favourite hero, Action Man - and walked across his Dr.X carpet to his computer. Careful not to knock the playstation and TV off the top of it, Tom reached behind it to grab a wire that had fallen down and disappeared behind his chest of drawers." This way you're saving time and space - since you're giving us description whilst carrying on with the storlyine - and you are not boring people by giving them a list of what Tom has and then a list of what Tom does. Of course, most Fable fanfics won't be containing Tom or his Action Man Cheeky [:cheeky:]. Or Dr.X, playstations, RVs and PCs either Paranoid [:Paranoid:].

while writing battle's consirder this aswell, what the person feel's see's hear's. if you want idea's of describtion in battle read the end of chapter three, from the link i gave above Happy [:)]

Yeah thanks guys, I didn't expect so much response, especially Zatl lol So can somebody take a look at my latest chapter and tell me if the battle scene is ok, too short, not enough detail or whatever please? Any advice is welcome.

Re: Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

dam i just read it, i must say you put my fanfic to shame, lol well done, i read from the part with the fire spell wiping the bandits out. my feedback to you is were did you get the idea's from? i cant really give any bad points, hopefully someone else can, a better writer than me. Big Smile [:D] well done. here's a new tip peeps: "write a bio for each of your charecters, write down every single little thing about them, get to know them, know more than you'll ever have to tell the readers"

Re: Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

Wow, thanks a lot hermit. And as for where I got the ideas; Well basically, for the hand to hand, I thought to myself how would Logan who's a big bulky bloke fight? So I thought big sword & big power. For Theresa, she's a powerful magic user so I figure she might have been able to master mixing spells (enflame and force push in my fanfic), there may even be a few new ones later in the story Wink [;)]

Re: Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

Hello. maybe I should try this trick you speak of... Um... he likes... using multi arrow or slow time and multi strike on trolls. seeing as mines in a 3rd person, someone-else-perspective, thats really all I can say.

Re: Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

How bout doing a variation of multi arrow, where it can hit multiple targets instead of just one, or maybe your character can perform trick shot. And maybe take out multiple trolls quickly using slow time? Just a few ideas, feel free to nick any Happy [:)]

Re: Writers (tips n tricks) lets help each other:)

I'm new to this forum but a trick i use to write stories is imagine myself as the chrecter in the story. This makes it easier to describe his/her emotions and senses . . .at least for me I have a question about posting a fanfic would this be the right place to ask?
