    Pretty disappointed so far

You can only talk to milo when an icon appears at the bottom corner of the screen that indicates milo is listening. If the icon is absent, he will continue his scripted motion/screenplay until the next sequence.

Image scanning. Images held up to the screen that the user has drawn will be recognized by milo, but the technology is extremely limited. The designers knew some players would draw sinister images, so they were "smart" by having milo view and recognize colors and shapes but he will never show the drawn image in his world or pin it up on his virtual wall.

Milo has extremely limited conversation. You will not be able to swear at him as he will not recognize or even understand the word as well as many other words.

So with those main points and facts being said, you can now look forward to another linear and bland gaming experience. Is this supposed to be a fun game or were they just aiming at something new and impressive?

The one thing that ticks me off is how they have milo scan what you've drawn but they've intentionally made it so you can't see that drawn image in the game world. It's interesting they want to limit things like that. Wouldn't it actually be FUN if we could influence Milo's world the way we liked?

Milo has a lot of potential but if it remains the way it is now I will definitely not pick this up. Wouldn't even rent it.

If the designers are interested in reading on, here are a few suggestions.
    - Make it so Milo can be interrupted. If he's dancing on a rock or in the middle of some sequence have him listening all the time. Play around with that, I KNOW it can be done. If there are issues with that, make keywords to interrupt him like saying "milo" in a louder tone.

    - Make it so the scanned images can be seen in Milo's world. Why remove this? It's seems like the most obvious feature to include in the game yet apparently because people have sinister intention you remove it. It's not like Milo would recognize the images drawn.

-Conversation. Probably what most of the people curious about expecting based on what has been shown. Can we hold a conversation with him? If not, then your main goal should be this point.

To others reading this, comment, suggest, correct me.

    Re: Pretty disappointed so far

I think the term "so far" is a bit of a stretch.  Aside from a surge in press surrounding its initial announcement we've not been told much of anything further about Milo.

I also think many people are forgetting that Milo is the first significant step towards innovation of this kind.  Innovation does not come packaged neatly in a plastic wrapped DVD case that you bought for $59.99.  Instead, innovation comes over the course of many games, as developers evolve that innovation further and use design trends to enhance it.  We can't expect the indsutry to make the huge leap to believable AI in its literal form all in the breadth of one title.  We can, however, expect Lionhead to be leaders in innovation by making the first few steps towards that.

I would wager that, as the first step towards this kind of gaming, you're expecting a bit too much from what Milo has to offer.  Therefore I've no doubt you'll be disappointed "so far" and beyond.  Keep things in perspective. Smily [:)]

    Re: Pretty disappointed so far

Natal hasn't even been released yet, so it’s not really fair to make judgement.
We should be thankful that Lionhead even showed us Milo, considering it’s not even finished. They usually keep projects behind closed doors.

Like all technology, it will have its limitations, but I find new technology exciting.
Having said that, I probably won’t buy it when it’s first released for the same reason I didn’t buy the Wii, I’ll need to see more games and applications first.

    Re: Pretty disappointed so far

Yes true. I had the impression they were trying to create a world that you could interact with, then later I found the chat transcript someone had with peter and found those indepth details.

What's on my mind is were they trying to create a game/demonstrative game that just shows off the technology so some other group can expand on that or were they trying to make "THE game" that makes use of the techonology as well as being an amazing game itself?

As I see it now, it's just a demonstrative game. I don't want to be insulting to the developers at all but you can't really call a game like that fun. Even though they've only shown us a fraction of the game, the base stats such as talk only when he's listening really kills it. You can't BE in milo's world or feel part of that world if it feels non-emmersive (spelling...).

Having said that, I probably won’t buy it when it’s first released for the same reason I didn’t buy the Wii, I’ll need to see more games and applications first.

You didn't miss anything, I made the mistake of buying it. Never again nintendo.

Wouldn't it be easier to judge the game when it becomes available.  What little I have seen looks like something my 7 year old would appreciate. Tongue Tied [:S]

    Re: Pretty disappointed so far

Actually it's better to bring up an issue while a game is in production.
After all, we are the ones expected to buy these games so essentially it helps if they know what we're expecting or wanting. I don't expect they will make a sequal to Milo so why not make the first game as G o o d [Good] as it can be?

    Re: Pretty disappointed so far

From your post, it sounds a bit like you are disappointed because you can't insult Milo or give him pictures of penises that you drew.

If the purpose of the game is to let players live a fun and innocent part of a person's life (childhood as it should be for everyone, not only for the lucky ones), then it's more than natural that they will try to work around people exploiting the game's features to completely change the mood.

Other than this, I do believe it is a bit too early to feel disappointed, we know so little of the game so far!

Moreover, it's not easy to find a compromise between a "child simulator" and an actuale "game", they need to find the right balance which means sacrificing some things to have other ones.

    Re: Pretty disappointed so far

What... Seriously I can't believe some people.
Without the features I brought up, this game would suck! I wouldn't buy it for anyone.

How hard is it or how unusual is it to want a game to be more emmersive, more functional? I SHOULD be able to call milo over whenever I want. If the producers want us to stand in our damn living room waving my arms in the air for milo and drawing pictures for him then cut us some slack and let us choose what we want to show him. They don't have to include big letters on the box that says "warning, your child might draw a big dong to be scanned"

I must be missing something here because without functions like that it will not be fun and yes I can make this judgment based on the small info they have fed.
It's a pretty straight forward game. We interact with Milo (when he listens...) and based on our choices and interactions with him, changes the way he develops as the game progresses. Like if we got him a bike, he might become more playful. Or if we helped him study more he would become more analytical and read or something.

I'm out. Enjoy your linear experience.

    Re: Pretty disappointed so far

You, like everyone else, have virtually no idea what the game's going to be like. How on Earth can you possibly claim that without your suggestions the game would suck? We've only seen a few tiny features, you can't seriously expect people to believe that you know how the game could be improved without even knowing what the game's like. And besides, something tells me that there's a reasonably strong possibility your suggestions will have been thought of by Lionhead in the many years they've been working on this. They know everything about the game and you (we) know nothing. They have more than one person thinking up stuff like what you've suggested, and going into the pros and cons of it into fine detail you couldn't even imagine. Perhaps I'm putting too much faith in Lionhead here, but I think the group of professionals have a slightly better idea of how the game's likely to run after all these years than some guy on the internet who knows nothing about it.

There's no need to get so upset about this, and no need for your attitude. People disagree with you, you should expect this. And this isn't even in some kind of discussion where there's a right or wrong answer, your opinions aren't fact, this is all a matter of preference. Not even that, we have very little to make an opinion so you're insisting that you're right and everyone else is shockingly wrong when you don't even have any strong justification for an opinion.

    Re: Pretty disappointed so far

to me, it sounds like the old game "Hey you pikachu" for the 64. I never felt part of his world, and it never had a purpose. I know this is 10 or so years later, but I believe it'll be the same concept, but instead with a slightly more advanced eye toy.

sorry lionhead, but I'm not interested in babysitting a 10 year old british kid.

    Re: Pretty disappointed so far

Then don't buy the game, simple as that.

Or at least wait until we have any idea what the game's going to be like. It's remarkable how so many people seem to know exactly what's going to be happening and exactly what you'll be doing. I think I've missed out a massive announcement somewhere...

now that I look back I just noticed that might have seemed like a racist remark. but no, lol. in fact, I think an american kid would be worse. he'd get obese or something... and be just as annoying. and I'm American too, so that one's not racist =D

but when I think of a 10 year old or around the age, I always think of Halo 3 - every single 10 year old who plays it is the most annoying high pitched whiney and jealous as freak who needs parents who care about the ratings of the game they play. Just the way they try trash talking goes to prove they're much too immature to play an M rated game.

Well, you're the expert then. Thank God Lionhead has someone of your prestige here to tell them how silly they've been making such a daft game. Sorry we doubted you, if only you'd revealed your credentials back then!

I'm just grateful you changed your mind and decided not to leave us with that linear experience after all.

They do need to release more info on this game. A lot people are getting their hopes up and if it doesn't deliver natal will suffer. If it can't do everything people think that is fine. Just let us all know.
