    Sorrow's Lament

Days turned to weeks as they waited for Sabre's return.

Minstrels told of a titanic clash in the Darkwood Swamp, of terrible magic and fell beasts and of balverines and hobbes fleeing into the Greatwood and the Barrow Fields trying to escape the destructive forces being unleashed.  The friends comforted each other and waited, not daring to enter the swamp.

Adelina the Sorrowful Blade stood on the battlements of Bowerstone's walls, looking up the road and waiting for his return, as had become her custom.  On the last day before the reign of the High King of Albion, she gazed out and saw a figure limping down the road.

His leathers were filthy and torn down one arm, revealing the muscled flesh beneath.  His hair was ragged and dirty and falling in his face.  He limped along, Avo's Tear hung across his back.

It was Sabre, King of all Albion."

Adelina stopped the tale as her son rolled over to look at her, blue eyes bright beneath his liquid black bangs.

"Why didn't King Sabre rebuild the Guild, momma?"

She reached down and brushed the bangs from his forehead, leaning down to give him a kiss on the forehead.  "Because he did not want anyone else to rise to power or challenge him."

    "What happened to Blade?"

Adelina felt the pain of the old sorrow.  "Blade still serves King Sabre, as the King's Hand."

    "And Whisper?"

"I don't know," she answered truthfully.  "Whisper and your father were sent to Snowspire by the King, on an important mission.  They never returned."

"When I get bigger, I'm gonna go find dadda.  Me and Kestrel."

She kissed him again.  "No... you and Kestrel will grow up strong and I'll teach you both to use your gifts."

    "Why?"

She stood and looked down at her son, her eyes sad and pained.  "Because I made a mistake."

I should never have crowned him.

After the deaths of Sparrowhawke and Whisper, she had been confronted by Blade in the corridors of the Castle, his hand tight on her arm.

    "Flee," he had told her.

She had fled in the night, taking her infant son and her baby brother with her, disguised as a washer woman and sneaking them out in a basket of laundry.  Her brother and his sorceress had been killed in their beds, her mother had died fighting the guards to cover her escape, and now, seven long years later, King Sabre ruled with an iron fist in an iron glove.  His wife, Queen Elvira, was as terrible as she was beautiful.

And it was all her fault.

Looking out the window of her little cottage, she could barely make out the towers of the Castle, a world away from the hovel in the slums, where Sabre would never think to look for her.  It was her fault but she was the architect of the destruction of his Kingdom.  Let him reign.  Let him rule.  In the decade to come, let him grow fat and content.

The scions of the Blood, the heirs to the House of Archon, Kestrel, her beloved baby brother, and Hawke, her beloved baby son, would take her revenge on Sabre and carve Sorrow's Lament into his bones...

Dear angel, where are your warming wings tonight? It's so cold outside. Won't you hold me for a while? And angel, I feel alone and unalive. The night is frozen and these tears have stung my eyes.

Awesome ending. I have to say that I'm sad about Whisper and Sparrowhawke's deaths. Did they ever find happiness? Here's hoping for a sequel. Thanks for writing this and God bless!

    A magnum opus?

You truly do me such honor and I am left somewhat speechless by your praise.

Regarding a sequel, I won't discount the idea but my next project is going to be a Fable II fan fiction.  I will begin working on that tomorrow.

    Ciao for now.

    God this story is beautiful!

I loved the ending, even though it was grim, I just liked it for some reason, because not all heroes make the right decisions all the time, and sometimes they have to pay the price.

Adelina, we will miss your tales.

    Oh my...

Not really sure to how feel about the ending. To me, it felt rather anti-climatic and well...rushed. Almost kind of like the Fable II ending. Lead up to something big and then it just...fizzles.Tongue Tied [:S]

It was an excellent story either way though. I greatly enjoyed the first one, enjoyed the second one and really liked this one and it's nice to see that you finally finished it, despite the lonely troll. Proud of you Marcasite.Wink [;)]

As always, all G o o d [Good] things must come to an end. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and definitely look forward to the next story of yours.

    Re: Sorrow's Lament

Regarding the ending, I must admit that it was a spur of the moment decision that made it turn out the way it did.  I had the first half written and was going to continue it in the same fashion as before.  I was sitting at the computer, working on a different project, when inspiration struck.

I envisioned Adelina telling this story to her child, so that he would know the truth.  And then, with her child needing to know the truth, I realized that it was not going to be a happy ending.  It was stream of thought writing and, the moment it was done, I posted it.

I am working on my Fable II story but I am having trouble with the beginning.  I don't know when it will go up.  I just scrapped a whole day's worth of writing because I didn't like it.

    Oh well.

I hope to have the next story started soon.  Until then...

    Ciao for now.

Had a feeling he'd turn out to be like that. That was great of Blade to warn her to flee though, he could have just set by and let her be killed. Then he stayed with the King, guess he figured it would be better to serve than to be killed. Or maybe he is hoping to one day help her with revenge by having someone trusted on the inside.

Will be looking forward to your next story.

    Re: The Sorroful Blade

Wow. Not only is Maze a betrayer, he is also a perv. Still, I like were this story is going. It is definately a different take on the Fable story. I can't wait to see her brother. Also, Sorrow may be stronger, but I wonder if she'll ever gain the confidence to realize that she is the best of the best. Without that confidence, people will always surpass her.

I wonder who it is that has claimed her. Is it Bloodraven, Jack of Blades or someone else?

    Re: Puppet Master & Pawn

So, is the Reaver in this story the same as the Reaver in Fable II? If so, he's older than I thought. Still, I do kind of like Bloodrave. I hope we get to see more of him. I also like the fact that he seems to be on a whole different level, especially since he can sneak up on a seasoned Hero like Maze. Can't wait to see if he's able to woo Sorrow and what the other boys in her graduating class might think of that. ^-^

Crap. Bloodrave turned out to be a real jerk. -_- Can no one resist a request from Jack? And Whisper sleeping with him? Wonder what Thunder would say to that since he already loathes Bloodraven. I so hope someone step in to help Sorrow. Where's a big brother when you need one?

Ummm, I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but maybe you should finish reading the story completely and then comment, after all, most of us on this website have read this take (It is very popular) and commented and speculated on all of the chapters. Just finish it and then give your opinion on it overall, that's all I'm saying Wink [;)]

Re: Maze & the Bandit King

Awesome. I so like this Aiden. I hope he has a way to make Maze not be able to view Sorrow's every move. I also hope someone makes Maze and Bloodraveb pay for what they've done. If Aiden is as G o o d [Good] as he says he is, then he'll be able to tell Sorrow that Bloodraven is not her friend. I hope she's the one to make him regret crossing her.

Re: No Rest for the Weary

I like that you chnaged the story and put Sabre in the Arena. It makes Sorrow's character more realistic if she isn't the best at everything. I also like Sparrowhawke's role in this. It creates a true rival for Bloodraven. Though now that he has been blessed by Skorm, he's probably even more dangerous. I'm just glad Sorrow's little silbing is alright. ^-^

Sorry, but my reviews are for the author. If they bug you you don't have to read them, but unless they bother the author than I will keep posting them. Not meaning to be rude, but that's just the way I always do it with a story I like.

    Re: Future in Balance

I live that Alian is more worried for his sister than anyone else. I jsut wish he would tell her that she can defeat Jack. I have a feeling she'll give the sword to Sabre and even if he's willing to treat her right for awhile, I doubt it will last. Still, I'm anxious to see how you end this.

    Re: Sorrow's Lament

Wow. That was an awesome story. I'm sad that all the Heroes ended up dead, but I also think it's cool that Blade chose to help Sorrow when he didn't have to. Alain was right about him not failing her. I hope we see a sequel to this story or that maybe you'll write one about Fable II. Heroines in these stories are interesting and I'd love to see what you do with a female Sparrow... Especially with Reaver and the Commandant around. Those two are kind of like Sabre and Maze. Your take on them would be intertesting. ^-^
