Re: Dragon Age Originates October 20
I haven't picked it up yet, but the reviews are saying that the graphics on the pc version are the best, then PS3 is the next best for graphics, and then the XBOX360.
The PC version is harder, but it will play like the console versions if you play it on easy mode. Meaning you shouldn't have to pause it too much during the big battles to determine your strategy.
Sounds like I'll be playing it on easy the first time through.

Re: Dragon Age Originates October 20
Picked it up for PC and wow, graphically it's far more beautiful than videos and screenshots had led me to believe, though they might have been from the Xbox 360 version. Combat system is quite involved and there is some enviromental strategies to be found. The difficulty is quite challenging but never borders on frustration on normal mode. Though I may have an advantage having played Baldur's Gate (+ expansion) Baldur's Gate 2 (+ expansion) Icewind Dale (+ expansion) Icewind Dale 2 (+ expansion) and Neverwinter Nights (+ expansions). I like the origins. So glad the player character finally has a real motivation and development.
There are things that pick away at me though. Minor things mostly. I'm quite disappointed in the way Bioware handled the downloadable content, a big fat "PREMIUM CONTENT" entry in your journal, with an NPC that delivers a popup asking you if you want to buy it. Thanks, that doesn't break the immersion at all! Asshats. I say Bioware, but I just know EA is behind this somehow. Real world advertisements don't belong in games, period.
For some reason Birdo clearly has the voice of a Japanese man in this trailer. It's like... eating a cake. You expect the cake to be delicious, but when you bite into it, it sounds like a Japanese man. See what I'm trying to say here?

.... Lazy basterd, can't blame you though, took a lot of will power to drag my self off the game to get this course work done.

Re: Dragon Age Originates October 20
Fata1moose:I really like it so far, anyone find the place of power in the deep roads? I can't find it also I found a sextant to give to someone for a quest and can't find him, help would be appreciated.
Sorry I haven't got to that part yet... I do have the strategy guide (*The special edition exclusive strategy guide that includes the complete DRAGON AGEtm: ORIGINS game guide packed with over 300 pages detailing every QUEST, NPC, MONSTER, and ITEM across the world of FERELDEN!. EXCLUSIVE LORE BONUS SECTION! Details the history of the blight and the origins of each noble faction. A revealing look at the Ferelden's past, which can't be found anywhere else... not even in the game (Just on gamespot in about two weeks time). Step behind the scenes with revealing interviews with the development team. Autographs from BioWare Develpment Team inside!) but I've refused to really look at it until I finish the game.
* Yes I did just quote the piece of paper that came with it but damn it the book cost me £20 which is £8 more then the standard edition I'm getting my damn worth out of it. I guess your wondering why I would pay £8 extra... well the guy at the counter convinced me... he was a fat guy with a beard... he looked like Peter Jackson... how could I say no.

Re: Dragon Age Originates October 20
Sorry for the double post here but I've just found out that you can access your players profile information over the computer which is pretty nifty if we want to show of our characters.
So those that want to proudly show off there characters post away.

Re: Dragon Age Originates October 20
Sadly not, I don't own the PC version of the game otherwise I would. I do doubt that it would run on my computer... mines not exactly high end material. I wish I did have the computer to run such a thing, I bet I could make far more interesting stories with it then what nwn's aurora tool set is offering. Well not exactly story's (I already have the story) but I would probably be able to make the areas more accurate with this toolset.

Re: Dragon Age Originates October 20
![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) game, enjoying it ![Smily [:)]](/emoticons/emotion-1.gif) I'd say it's more engaging than thrilling so far, but as I clocked up 10 hours or so on the 1st day, it's probably doing something right. The sequence in the Mage's Circle with, er, the rodent (to avoid spoilers) seemed to drag and go on far too long, so there are maybe some pacing issues, but in fairness all the fireworks going off outside the windows where I live were annoying me. And in truth you're never going to please everyone all the time in any game like this. I've played through the Human Noble origin which was, frankly, lazy, trite and predictable to the point of making me wonder what the hell all the reviews were on about, but it's picked up since then story-wise, and it was worth plodding through. Although I'm still waiting for it to really make it's own mark on the worth of Fantasy RPG storytelling, but it's ![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) stuff compared to some of the cringe-making blandness Bioware have sunk to of late. Early days yet through, obviously, but if I was asked I'd say the world The Witcher painted was a more interesting place, or at least made me feel more like I was directly involved in shaping it, rather than wandering through sightseeing. Its world felt more, I dunno, lived in . Don't get me wrong - Dragon Age's world is ![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) at drawing you in - just not the very best. Certainly a big improvement on the world of Mass Effect, which was plastic to the point of making me feel I could peep behind the sets at any point I chose, and was frankly a turgid, stifling mess.
Some of the voice-acting is a bit wobbly - especially when some of them are called on to laugh - and dear God, the Blood! The comically awful Blood! Look, tone it down in the cutscenes next time guys - I honestly, genuinely laughed out loud in the 'Pathos' part of the origin I played it was that bad, and why the hell can you walk into a church smeared head to toe in gore without anyone batting an eyelid when you strike up a conversation? Sort it out Bioware - it looks ridiculous. On the plus side, some of the voice work is excellent - Alistair is played by the bloke who did Harry in Uncharted 2, for example, and is utterly convincing. Unlike, say, Flemeth, who sounds like a plank
Combat is ![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) , and although the Mobs are uttely predictable morons who run headlong into obvious ambushes every time, they've got the difficulty balance just right so you have to plan a little prior to attacking yet still come out of it feeling like a double-hard *** with the brain of a military genius. I'm favoring a stealth recon approach myself - and I'm impressed it gives me the freedom to do so - scouting what's ahead before moving the team into ![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) ambush positions, backstabbing one of the enemies, and getting them to chase me back into the area where my party cuts them to ribbons from all sides. I like that the Tactics have a very comprehensive range of options, and they have a solid effect on the friendly AI. If I want them to do something using the Tactics setup, I'm confident it'll do what I want, when I want. I'd go as far as to say the combat system is one of the best I've played in an RPG, in fact. Loving that you recover so quickly after fight btw - it lends great urgency and pace to the game. They got that bit 100% right.
I'm playing on a PC, and it's absolutely rock-solid for me so far in terms of the engine. ![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) loading times, 100% stable (under Windows 7) - I've yet to find a single glitch in it in fact. It's very impressive, especially considering the scope of the game, but the QA team really seem to have done superb work. Graphically it's a mixture of the Very ![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) with some odd texture line-up mismatches, but overall it's a nice looking game. Slightly annoyingly, I'm playing it on a TV but if I put it up into 1920x1080 resolution (1080p for console owners ![Wink [;)]](/emoticons/emotion-5.gif) the text is unreadable small. That said, playing at 1080p, the resolution far outstripped the quality of the textures, so actually dropping it to 720p equivalent and cranking up the Anti-Aliasing means looks pretty much the same. Maybe even slightly better when you get into it - the subtly softer edges allow it to blend some of it's components together better, and I've yet to see the framerate drop below what to my unscientific eye must be at least 60fps v-synched. This is on a GeForce 9800GTX+ btw, which is hardly top-flight these days. Oh, also I can read what it's saying at that res, which is always a bonus
Anyway. ![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) game. Very ![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) , in fact, although shy of being truly great. My opinion, of course, nobody elses. Certainly a return to form for BioWare in my books, who've been off the boil for quite some time from my point of view and have been stuck in a rut of predictable, contrived, over-written, clunky story-telling and world crafting. Mass Effect was the worst of them all, but Dragon Ages feels like a place . They've got the balance right again and it all gels. It's just ironic that it's unique selling point - the origin - was, basically, dross.
EDIT - Oh, and Mr Markrichardbehenna is absolutely correct - wandering up to the chap in your camp and having a long, detailed, interesting conversation which abruptly ends with the conversational option "Yes! I will help you in this quest by buying a Download Pack!" is absolutely game-ruining. They should be ashamed, deeply, deeply ashamed. I don't care who's fault it is, they need to sort it and the frankly laughable excess of comedy blood in the cutscenes out. Seriously - it looks like a parody of itself.

Re: Dragon Age Originates October 20
Fata1moose:where do I go to post my character?
Go to the official website, then to the community, then create an account, activate your game with your account (for console games it will ask you for your barcode number) then there you go your profile... I just print screened the picture although if you want a more in-depth look you could post the link to your character.

@Matnee: I liked all the blood lol, it certainly didn't make the game as Mature as it was boasting but it made the game look over the top and well it did look kind of awesome. According to the documentary on the second disk they were influenced by 300 for the combat and used some of the stunt workers from that movie for the combat so well that would explain the over the top gore.

Re: Dragon Age Originates October 20
I like the blood, myself. I find it is better to exlpore an area and talk to everyone first before completing a quest.
I would show you my photo but for some reason it didn't upload currectly to the bioware site. I am thinking it may be because my xbox is turned off, or else there is a glitch. Her stats are there but her photo and full body are not there. I wonder if I delete her on bioware and reload the game if that will fix the problem or make it worse?
EDIT: I forgot I died last night before quitting for the night that might effect the profile on the server. Will check later when I reload game later. Doing the shapeshifiting mouse thing.

Mmmm, not too sure how that's happened... my xbox was off when I uploaded my character but it worked out well. I was on the mouse part (Technically the burning man part) before I had to drag my self off to do this course work ![Cry []](/emoticons/cry.gif) I hate course work when I have to do it at home..

It could be the file, I had loaded it up yesterday and my files body would show, but her photo would never come up. Thinking it looks like I should delete it and try reloading it since the save is still on my box. I may play with it later I have laundry calling my name.

Oh, I've got nothing against the blood during the fighting and so forth. I'm all for a bit of mindless gore when you're trying to do something essentially mindless with a movie or game, and I think some of the action cut scenes are really very well done indeed, especially some of the battle ones. It's the bits where, say, you're holding your dying father in your arms, he speaks his last words, it's supposed to be a sensitive moment steeped in pathos. Only I can't keep a straight face because exactly as he speaks his last word, he suddenly looks like he's pissing himself. Only it's an absolutely massive puddle of ribena that he's suddenly sat in - as if he's somehow been managing to hold it all in before he shuffled off this mortal coil. They've ballsed up some of the character-based story telling, basically - I'm supposed to be feeling anguish, but I'm sniggering like I'm watching a b-movie horror.
Also it mildly annoys me that people's reactions change not one iota if you run up to them absolutely covered in blood and strike up a conversation. It's ham-fisted game direction - if you're going to insist on having comedic amounts of blood in your game as a feature that's had a fair bit made of it in the run-up to release, you've simply got to have it as something with more than a merely cosmetic effect on the game. Yes, there's a *** load of blood in the game, no, it doesn't actually mean anything more than in, say, House of the Dead : Overkill. Which was an ace game I might add, but was actually meant to be comically awful...
Hardly game-breaking, but it's disappointing that they couldn't be bothered making the effort do do much more than your average film student's 1st attempt at a horror movie with it. They've taken the 'Throw buckets of red stuff at the screen' approach to it all, and while I actually think that's great in fighting scenes, they've really arsed it up elsewhere in terms of direction in some of the story elements. Genuinely laughably bad, in fact. Coz I, er, genuinely laughed at it, you see...
Still, a minor point in an otherwise ![G o o d [Good]](/emoticons/g_o_o_d.gif) game.
