I remember a day long ago, when I was still a child. When I didn’t have to worry about being a leader, my empire, those Greeks…
It was a bright day, and I was out playing on the beach with the only friends I had. They were all sons of the upper class. It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky, and everyone was happy. Our gates were open to any that may wander by. But this paradise was too soon to end. Corruption wound its ugly growth through the ranks of officials, and my father was assassinated. Thinking I was to young to rule, the corrupted officials went in to take my power from me. But my father had trained me well, I know much of how to deal with such traitors as these, and I had them banished from the empire. It was my time to rule now, and rule I did.
Although our kingdom was grand, spanning far and wide, I was not satisfied. I wanted everyone to know the strength of the Aztecs. It started with the Norse. They were quick to fall. I called all the willing men of my empire to lend their souls to my army and we easily defeated those pitiful Norse and gained their loyalty. The Japanese were much harder to crush. They were a noble race, with much dignity. Their soldiers were skilled and were very experienced in the art of war. The conquest of the Japanese took much longer, with much more casualties than expected, but in the end, we proved too much for them. They too pledged loyal to the might of the Aztecs. The day was finally upon us to take the Greeks.
I was confident the conquest of the Greeks would take no time at all. We had our creature to do our bidding, and who had the hunger for Greek lives.
The time for war was finally upon us. We had already captured some of their smaller nations and were mobilizing on their capital. I was among my soldiers. I could feel their anxiousness and new nothing would defeat us today. As night fell, we landed our ships and assembled. I sent the Creature in first with the catapults to destroy the walls. With the darkness on our side, those Greeks were no chance. I lead my vast army into the capital slaughtering all we saw. As I ran down to the main city, I saw a lone woman kneeling at a statue of a creature. She seemed to be praying, but I thought nothing of it and continued the massacre. The conquest soon ended when our creature summoned a volcano, crushing any hopes the Greeks might have had.
The conquest was over. The Aztecs had won. Although it was the day I had planned for years, I couldn’t help but wonder about the rumors spreading. It seems the some soldiers had seen a whirling fog come from the ground and Greek villagers disappearing into the mist. I also heard reports of fences suddenly, letting the hay held behind the roll and crush my army. The final rumor is haunting me the most. It seems hay rolls suddenly sprung up in flames and rolled at my army, killing many.
To be continued…
