    pure mage

i've played through the game 3 times now and this time i decided to be pure mage and not use any weapons *at all*. which turns out to be pretty hard, cuz the first spells are pretty useless. lightning does a pathetic 18 damage points at a time, fireball misses any moving target and any other spells are so dam expensive. it takes forever to gather enough experience to level up. i decided to do the hobbe killing contest even tho i only had basic spells, just to gather experience. turns out i couldn't, cuz by the time i'd killed 2 hobbes (18 lousy damage points at a time) whisper had killed 8 or 9. i had to resort to the sword in the end. it seriously takes *forever* to gather experience. since the hobbe killing contest didn't go so well i decided to take another quest; escorting the traders through darkwood. gathered experience: 820. the level 2 spells cost like 5000 experience. and even they will only cause minimum damage. my point is that they have made it way too hard to be pure mage. the first spell should cause at least as much damage as the first sword.

    Re: pure mage

If you want experience I typically spend my time killing guards. You can do so quite easily without getting hit most times (just watch out for the crossbow, be sure to dodge when appropriate) and your combat multiplier will go up as well as your renown. All the same, being a mage is pretty tough for at least the first few levels. Just keep working at it. Eventually you'll get to a happy medium. Does this thread title remind anybody else of "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wanka and the Chocolate Factory? Paranoid [:Paranoid:]

Zomg, I'm here! Wink [;)] I don't give sympathy, I give advise. Silly [:p] I love doing pure mage and have done it 2 or 3 times. Allright if you're being good best thing to do for experience is to get crap loads of will potions and go to hobbes cave, physical shield is also good but not essential. in hobbes cave start killing hobbes. Tip for lightning: If you're on xbox, when you cast lightening wiggle the left analogue stick as fast as you can from left to right (then right to left Paranoid [:Paranoid:] ) as you do this it will change targets and as it changes it will strike again, thus greatly speeding up the time it takes to kill the enemy/ies, you can even so this one one target. Also if you're surrounded you can use this to make sure none get close enough to hit you. Instead of hitting about about once a second you'll do more like 5+. Not sure what the button is on PC, but the one that changes target and turns the camera around. Anyway keep killing hobbes, try to keep your distance using lightening as this will mean that they don't get close enough to hit you and reduce your multiplier (this is where physical shield comes in, if you get hit, it won't reduce your multiplier. Just make sure you keep your mana topped up as if it reaches zero the shield will go down) your multiplier should be around 20ish when you kill all the hobbes in the main passage, then go to the focus chamber, kill all the hobbes here. Then back again to the main passage ect. This is generally how I get enough exp to max everything for the age reduction. Just requires a little patients. If you want to be Evil [Evil] do the same with guards, only problem is you have to wait for a bit until they respawn, in which your multiplier will go down...

You cannot get the rune marks (I think that what they called, did read it here somewhere)that are as bright as the ones on maze. Once you have your Magic up at max level then yo should have a faint pattern and some neat blue glowing hands. You may have to have a couple of spells maxed out aswell.

    Re: pure mage

Using nothing but will power and being nothing but a Pure Mage is hard. I think I only pulled it off once and for me the hardest part was doing the Arena with nothing but will. What I do to get the experiance is during the Wasp Queen quest, I use nothing but Lightning (duh). It usually takes a while so that means you get more wasps to come out and that means you have the chance to get more General Experiance and Will Experiance and most of the time it lets me get one new will power. After the Wasp Queen quest I go into Greatwood and just attack the enemys until I have enough to get one level of Enflame. Then (if you want to be evil) I go to the Heroes Guild and just attack with Enflame (be sure to have some extra will potions). I usually last about an hour to two hours before the Guards finally corner me and kick me out of town. I then go to Bowerstone Quay and sleep two times and then repeat. It shouldn't take you long until you have enough Will Experiance to get a few good spells.

no matter what game it is mages are ALLWAYS hard to play in the begining. but i pays off buy the time you cane really do some thing its one of the most powerfull things. i play a **** ton of d&d and the wizard is the hardest class to play untill level 7 or 8 then your the most deadly character it is imposible to go the hole way thur the game with out using eny wepons

    Re: pure mage

not impossible.. just difficult. i only have 3 spells; level 2 lightning, level 3 enflame and level 2 slow time. that's it. and i've gotten through the arena just fine. i admit i've used a sword to block on a few rare occasions tho, but if i'd had physical shield i wouldn't have needed to.

Heh..unusual to see D&D mentioned. I played that years ago when I was younger!! Yes, I have to agree that that the wizard was one of the hardest classes. I have gone through the game only three times without weapons and I completed it 30 plus times (well that what I am owning up to!! :Big Smile [:D]), it is really, really hard. If I know that I am going to try the game as a mage only then the first spell I try to upgrade is the physical shield.

    Re: pure mage

The arena seems to be hard for me while playing a mage. Though the only part is with the Rock Trolls because they keep jumping when I get near them they always jump up, even with the stupid Slow Time. And it isn't impossible to go through out the game without using a weapon (unless you are counting the Hero's Guild). As long as you have Force Push/Enflame you don't have to worry about the enemys getting to close and you not being able to block to good. Lightning/Fire Ball are your ranged weapons and Physical Shield/Slow Time can count as armor (if you want to do it that way also. Just ware your villager clothes).
