Bah... cut it out. Stick out tongue [:P]  Ken's already got me pegged as Krang (the E v i l [Evil] brain from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Zip it! [:#]

What sort of E v i l [Evil] nefarious plans do I have?  Just a little command-line utility that will let people create auto-animated props quickly...  I recently stitched together a whole bunch of these "the hard way", and finally decided I needed an "easy way".  Give it the costume, head, and hair to use, it does the rest.  The above image is just from my testing...  it's not for a movie!  I swear!  (Although the prospect of severed heads in a movie does give me a few ideas... Dead [:notalive:] )

I hate you, you know that? I hate you. Just kidding!Big Smile [:D]

Does this man you'll eventually pull parts off of costumes so we can make our own?

Like taking the boots from the Space Chick Short costume, and adding them to the 60s Catsuit?

    Re: Riley's Modding Updates

This is more just for creating animated props using the existing costumes...  The idea of taking pieces of one costume and attaching it to another is certainly a G o o d [Good] one, though.  Clothing itself (shirt, jeans, belts, and shoes) is typically attached directly to the costume mesh, so I'm not sure if you'd be able to do it with boots.  Hair, ties, necklaces, watches, and other accessories, on the other hand, are kept separate by the game -- so those parts will be interchangeable.

I've made some progress in getting custom heads (ie. Starmaker heads) placed onto animated human props...  For the technically inclined, check it out on the DCMF forums...

Incredible work rileyman! Just checked out all of your props in the game, and they're amazing! Some of the most useful mods ever made. Keep up the great work.

    Re: Riley's Modding Updates

Creating a new set with a facility was a bright idea.

But what I'm really looking forward is this animated actor-prop thingy you're working on, specially if you can copy the real actors. This will really open new doors in directing movie.

    Congrats again.

    Re: Riley's Modding Updates

Mostly "To TMO" the past few weeks, indeed.

Right now I'm working on some code that takes set dressing INI files, loads all the props from it, and generates a new prop that encompasses all of them.  All my command-line tools will be released sometime soon... and then integration into Med will start in the new year.

frosty, I know you were looking at deconstructing the Wild West Street set...  I'll try to look at that over x-mas sometime.

    Re: Riley's Modding Updates

Find out the answer December 27th! Wink [;)]

And frosty, I'm always happy to help with stuff, so don't worry about asking!  I only come across as "inaccessible" at times because I'm busy. Wink [;)]

And now for something completely different...  As a prelude to the various command-line tools I'm working on for Mesh-related stuff, I'm releasing something else to get people used to the notion of working with the command-line.

    TRL Reporting Utilities

Ever wanted to see your movie's thumbnail before you attempt to export your movie?
Ever wanted to know exactly what causes DE v i l [Evil]'s Bookmarks and other "phantom scenes" that contribute to the dreaded Sound Sync bug?

Download the TRL Reporting Utilities here.

Read the PDF user's guide for installation and usage instructions.  This package contains two very basic command-line tools:
    1. Thumbnail Extractor.  Give it the filename of your TRL file, it creates a JPG file of your movie's thumbnail.
    2. Scene Reporter.  Give it the filename of your TRL file, it creates a text report of all the scenes in your movie.  Compare the scene report with your movie in Movie Player to find the location of DE v i l [Evil]'s Bookmarks and other "phantom scenes" that cause the Sound Sync bug.
And FYI...  The TRL file format is not some secret that I've been hoarding.  I analyzed it many months ago while battling sound sync problems during production of For My Fellow Soldier.  Details on the TRL file format can be found on DCMF's wiki pages, which I typed up waaaayyy back in February or March.

I had some minor sound sync problems on my upcoming "To TMO or Not To TMO".  So over the past few days I churned out these little command-line tools, and used the scene reporting tool to help me combat the sound sync issue.  I exported the movie one final time last night, and all issues have been solved. Smily [:)]

    Re: Riley's Modding Updates

TRL file cannot be edited externally, unfortunately. Sad [:(]

The game inserts an encyrption key of some sort into the files, to prevent "bad" files from being uploaded to TMO.  So while we can read (and report on) the contents of a TRL file, we can't make changes to them.

Wow, this is some really thoughtful crafting here, Rileyman, I'm impressed by your work. Love what you've done to the casting office, and the headless actors are Really Useful,, they'd be perfect for some gore animation overlays I've been working on. I'll have to look through this excellent thread some more, more often.

I will have to try this TRL tool out, soon. It sounds very interesting, as does some of the other things you have coming out I caught wind of skimming this novel of a thread.

I admit you deffinately lost me on some of this, though.

    Re: Riley's Modding Updates

Try out the TRL tools, if for nothing else than to make sure your movie has a proper thumbnail!  If you absolutely can't use the command-line (though I encourage giving it a try -- tech-heads typically find command-line tools much faster to use than GUIs), you can always just drag-and-drop your TRL file onto the r3-tm-trl-thumb.exe file.

I've finished coding and testing an application that converts saved set dressing files into a single prop.  All that's left now is documentation for it.

So, in the very near future, it'll be four mesh-related applications:
    1)  Mesh file reporting.
    2)  Extract objects from meshes.
    3)  Add simple single-colour light-maps to a prop.
    4)  Convert saved set dressing files into a single prop.

And after that, an application to create "auto-animated" human props.  And then finally, getting it all integrated into the new Med.

I do hope people won't be frightened away by the fact that these are command-line for now...  You don't need to install .NET to use them, and they're extremely streamlined and quick.  And for the few of you who have been using my earlier alpha versions of them, you'll be happy to know that they now find and load content from the game's PAK files on their own (ie. no more need for Reshoot or Med to extract game files).

Rileyman:  "I've finished coding and testing an application that converts saved set dressing files into a single prop."

Would this affect auto-animated props in that they won't funciton any longer?  Or do they still have their animated powers?

    Re: Riley's Modding Updates

Indeed -- auto-animated props will no longer animate once they've been merged using this utility.  You'll have to place them separately.  This is strictly for all your static content!

As nice as it would have been to allow that, it wouldn't be possible due to the way mesh files and their related animations are organized.

That's going to be the most useful tool, allowing me to make a movie like Incident at Oak Ridge in a few weeks instead of a few months.  Now I know I'm gonna make my next movie.
