The Official 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' Support Topic

Hello and welcome to the official ‘Lionhead Support’ topic for ‘Fable: The Lost Chapters’. This is the place to come if you require any ‘Support’ for ‘Fable: The Lost Chapters’. Detailed below are all of the problems that we have been made aware of and ways of working around them.

Before continuing with this topic, please make sure that your PC is up-to-date and has the following: -
    - Meets ‘Fable: The Lost Chapters’ minimum PC specification requirements: - Operating System – Microsoft Windows XP. Processor – 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 equivalent or higher. RAM – 256 Megabytes. Hard Disk Space – 3 Gigabytes. Optical Drive – 32x CD-Rom drive or faster. Graphics Card – 64 Megabyte, Pixel Shaders 1.1 compatible graphics card.
    - The latest Nvidia drivers if your PC has an Nvidia graphics card, Nvidia.com.
    - The latest ATI drivers if your PC has an ATI graphics card, ATI.com.
    - Make sure that you have the latest Direct X installed, http://www.microsoft.com/directx.
    - Double check that your graphics card is officially supported by Fable, http://www.microsoft.com/games/fable/support.aspx.
    - Lastly, make sure that every other driver on your PC is up to date, as well as your Bios. Running things like ‘Disk Defragmenter’ and ‘Scan Disk’, as well as updating and running virus/spyware scans would also help. The issues below have been listed in the order of importance, and the order in which seems to be the worst, and most predominant issues.

Each issue is numbered, and the table of contents is as follows: -
    1. Sound Cards
    2. Disappearing Subtitled Text
    3. Windows XP Themes
    4. Screen Refresh Rates
    5. AutoSave Corruption
    6. Hero Save/World Save explanation
    7. Resolution Resetting Issues

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    1. Sound Card Problems Sound cards appear to be the cause of 90% of the problems encountered with ‘Fable: TLC’. There are several ways of fixing this problem. These fixes are as follows: - - Creative Cards - Go to CreativeLabs.com and use their ‘Auto Update’ feature. This will install the latest Creative sound card drivers on your system. - OpenAL32 – Download and install OpenAL32. ‘Google’ for it. - Sound Acceleration – If none of the above has any effect, try turning down your sound acceleration. To do this: - - Open the ‘Start’ menu. - Click on ‘Run’. - Type ‘DxDiag’. - Select the ‘Sound’ tab. - Turn the ‘Hardware Sound Acceleration Level’ slider down until you get a positive result.

    2. Disappearing Subtitled Text Many Nvidia graphics cards appear to suffer from a disappearing/flickering text issue. Positive results have been found by turning V-Sync On/Off. If no luck is found with this, and the disappearing text is found to be too much of an annoyance to continue playing, the subtitles can be turned off via the ‘Gameplay Options’ menu.

    3. Windows XP Themes Certain Windows XP themes can cause Fable to either run incorrectly or not at all. The easiest way to fix this is to change the theme back to the default (“Windows XP”) theme. To do this: - - On the desktop, Right-Click and open ‘Properties’. - Select the ‘Themes’ tab. - On this page, click on the arrow of the ‘Theme’ drop-down box. - Select ‘Windows XP’. - Click on ‘Apply’, followed by ‘OK’. The theme will now be changed. If changing the theme doesn’t help, try setting the Windows XP compatibility to ‘Windows 2000’. To do this: - - Right-Click on the ‘Fable: The Lost Chapters’ game shortcut and select ‘Properties’. - Select the ‘Compatibility’ tab. - Click on the ‘Run this program…’ tab, and select ‘Windows 2000’ from the drop down box. - Tick the ‘Disable Visual Themes’ box and click ‘Apply’.

    4. Screen Refresh Rates If you usually play games on a very high refresh rate, but are having problems with Fable: TLC, it could be down to this high refresh rate. If the game doesn’t run, or has issues, try setting your monitors refresh rate to 60. If doing this makes the game run, the refresh rate can always be turned back up in-game using the ‘Video Options’ menu.

    5. AutoSave Corruption Some people have encountered problems with their AutoSaves. It seems as though repeated saving and loading with some save games can cause it to become corrupted. There is no simple fix for this, other than don’t keep saving and loading to try and exploit the game, and frequently use ‘Manual Saves’.

    6. Hero Save/World Save Explanation There seems to be some slight confusion as to what the exact difference is between ‘Hero Saves’ and ‘World Saves’. If you are one of these confused people, hopefully the following will help clear this up: - Hero Saves – A ‘Hero Save’ is made during a quest. This will save your Heroes current stats, experience, items etc, but will not save your location in that quest. As such, upon loading a ‘Hero Save’, the Hero will be loaded at the beginning of the quest that the save was made in, but with all of the items that they have attained up until that save was made (Example – If a ‘Hero Save’ is made during ‘Guild Training’, if the save is then loaded, the Hero will be loaded at the beginning of the quest, in ‘Lookout Point’). World Saves – A ‘World Save’ can be made at any time outside of a quest. This save will save everything, including the Heroes location. Upon loading, the Hero will be exactly as he was when the save was made, and will be loaded at the entrance of the region that he was in when the save was made.

    7. Resolution Resetting Issues If the video options are changed on the ‘Front-End’, but these video options exceed what your PC can handle, then upon loading the game all settings will have returned to default. The most common cause of this is with people cranking the ‘Shadows’ slider to max. ‘Fable: The Lost Chapters’ only supports the next-generation ‘Pixel Shaders 3.0’ when the ‘Shadows’ slider is set to max. Currently, only the very latest Nvidia cards (‘6800 GT’, and ‘7800’) support this feature. The next ATI cards will support this, but the current X800 series does not. This is not an issue with the game, but an issue with ATI graphics cards. If you have an ATI card, you will not be able to set the ‘Shadows’ slider to max until the next generation R500 series hits the shelves.

Re: The Official 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' Support Topic

    Problem Symptoms:

Game crashes after changing something in the options or just opening the options and then going back. If I dont touch options and starting a new game, then game crashes when quiting using in-game menu's Quit function.

Then, when I start the game again, it crashes after clicking left mouse button on "Click Left Mouse Button to Continue" screen. It passes that screen if there are three or more accounts created, but when I attempt to load any existing profile, it still crashes.

    My system is:

    Asus P5W DH Deluxe Motherboard

    Intel Core2Duo 1.86GHz

    2048 Gb RAM

    nVidia GeForce 8600GT 256Mb

Realtek High Definition Audio (Integrated to Motherboard)

    Windows XP Professional SP2 Eng

    DirectX 9.0c August 2007

Reinstalling Fable didnt help. Reinstalling Windows didnt help. Disabling Audio Card didnt help.

Game worked perfectly on my old computer.

Re: The Official 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' Support Topic

I've got the same problem. I've done some searching and i found out that it crashes because the game can't load the profiles. It crashes at the options because it tries to load a profile to change its options. So the game can't load your profiles. I can start the game again if i delete the save files, but again, only once. As soon as i try to load the profiles it crashes.

    Any help on this?

Re: The Official 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' Support Topic

Problem is i have no snow or rain. I have the latest drivers and my pc is well above minimum requirements.
I have read here in the forums that im not the only one suffering this problem. But as of yet have not seen a solution or fix for it.

When i play the game i see the ripples on the floor from the rain, but no rain itself, unless you count the odd rain particle frozen in mid air. And when i go to the lost coast i see no snow to speak of, just the occaisional snow flake like the rain stuck floating in mid air.

Any help would be appreciated, i can live without those effects, but i cant help getting the feeling my experience of the game would be significantly better if they worked.

Hi everyone. Newbie to posting on these fourms, forgive the extended information. I'm annoyed and a little bummed out at the moment: I spent all day yesterday crunching and now I can't even load my save file to continue. Its hard to find some real help online, other fourms aren't helping!

    Problem: Angry [:@]
game crashes as soon as Auto Save pops up while loading saved file.

    What has been tried:
    changed theme of computer,
have uninstalled fable while keeping saved files,
have gone so far as to loading up a new game save and loading through back door - fails.

I've discovered today that my problem is related to #5 due to repeating my process of auto saving. The game file loads, but it is the AUTOSAVE File that is damanged.

All that is left is solving how to stop the autosave from working, allowing me to simply manual save when I need to.

Anyone know how to stop / disable Autosave!?afraid [:afraid:]

Re: The Official 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' Support Topic

I have a huge problem with Fable TLC, first off it won't play right. Whenever I try to play, the characters, objects, houses, everything is black, all the buttons work so i can attack and run and whatever, but i can't see anything. Secondly i can't uninstall Fable TLC from my computer. I click uninstall and the bar goes half way then it exits the uninstall, no message, no nothing, it just shuts the uninstall off. It's all so wierd 'cause about two months ago i could play it without any problems, but we had to do a total clean sweep on the computer and wiped the hard drive, had a bunch of viruses. Afterwards i installed Fable and it wouldn't work. Any thoughts would be extremley helpful at this point.

Re: The Official 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' Support Topic

It's a problem with third party Direct show codecs like K-lite. Same problem with the VistaCodecs pack. But it's easier to fix.

First of all, uninstall all third party codecpacks you may have on your machine and update to the newest version of VistaCodecs. It's the only one you'll need. Optionally you can keep Quicktime and Real.  (VLC is only local to it's own platform so that will have no effect on Fable.)

Delete you Fable profile, the entire folder. (my documents\my games\fable\saves\yourprofilename) Sorry, but your gonna have to start the game over.

Go to your windows start menu and find the "VistaCodecs\32bit Tools" folder.

Select the "Video decoder configuration" with the FFV icon.

Go to DirectShow control and select the Don't use ffdshow in check box. Then browse and select the Fable.exe program. This should disable the codec while Fable is running.

Now you can restart the game and it should be able to save and open the profile.

    It worked for me.

    Other things you should/could do:
    - Update to the latest DirectX
    - Update your Graphics card driver
    - Update your Audio driver
    - Set your regional settings to ENG (UK).

Re: The Official 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' Support Topic

I've got a question about a problem the game seems to be having for me. I've got the Apple version of Fable: The Lost Chapters, and up until just a little while ago, it worked perfectly on my laptop. Had worked, no problems, the multiple times I played it in the past. But now, when I'm told to put in the DVD to play the game, before it's even started, the game never recognizes that the DVD is even in the computer. I did a virus scan to check for problems, and got nothing. Checked all my other games, no problems. The computer does recognize that the CD is in the computer, but the game doesn't.

I even tried uninstalling the game and then re-installing it, but the problem persists. Like I said, never had the problem before. Does anyone have any idea what would be wrong with the game now that wasn't wrong before?

Re: The Official 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' Support Topic

am trying to install Fable TLC onto a computer that I just put together for my grandkids. System specs:

    AMD Athlon XP2400+ (2.0ghz)

    Radeon 9800XT

    2 gig PC2700 ram

Windows XP Pro Service pack 3

The game installs fine and lets me set up a user profile and begins with the short intro "slide show". The problem starts when the game itself begins....As soon as the game starts with the sleeping child, the computer immediately reboots. When windows comes back up, I get the grey block stating that windows has just recovered from a serious error.  I reinstalled 5 times and still got the same result. I then totally reformatted with a fresh copy of windows and tried again.  After 3 attempts at reinstalling, nothing has changed.  I even copied the game from another computer onto a jump drive and tried to start it from the drive......same results.

The game plays fine on another computer which has the same specs except for the video card is a Radeon X800.  The 9800XT should be more than enough video card for the game, because it was one of the hotter video cards when the game came out.  I did change refresh rates and screen resolution and pulled out pulled out the sound card and went with onboard sound . Still no help.  Changing "compatibility mode just made it so the game wouldnt start up at all. If anyone can help, I would deeply appreciate it because the kids are dying to play this game at home.

Re: The Official 'Fable: The Lost Chapters' Support Topic

Um, I seem to be having an interesting error. I have played this game for a while, and now it exits without notification. It does it at loading screens, just randomly began to do so. Now, it does this at the beginning load (from main options to get into my game).
I hear that this is a common problem, does anyone know of a way around it?

Edited to Add: Have uninstalled/reinstalled. Seems to work fine, but obviously is not a viable solution - can't be restarting my game every time I play.

Edited to Add: Seems to have reverted to the same issue.
