Re: How to use the graphics.config file?

I started a thread asking if there was any way I could make the text more legible when holding the mouse over items. It's grayish and tends to blend into the background. People have been blaming it on my video card, but I tend to think it's the design of the game. Is there anything I can do to brighten up the text? As it is, it's pretty useless.

Re: How to use the graphics.config file?

Yes, I told you in your thread that this problem may be related to the integrated graphic card and may not be solved. Did you try the MINSPEC command that I suggested, to see if this changes the behaviour of the info text bubbles? If you MINSPEC helps, you may want to dig deeper in the editing of the graphics.config to make yourself a more suiting solution. Therefore we need to know what IGP you exactly have. Go to Start->Run, type in and execute dxdiag to figure it out. The information needed is on the display tab in this DirectX diagnostic software. I would suggest we use your thread to deal with this problem, just to keep this sticky a bit cleaner. Wink [;)] So please post your results and further questions there.

Hi, I know this forum maybe a bit old but id like to ask how in the heck you add a graphics card that isn;t listed on there. I have a Radeon 9250 GameFx. I remember adding it on the list when i installed b&w2 but ever since i uninstalled it and havent played it ive lost knowledge on how this works. [Edit] Btw, I had hair and grass with this card but now I cant get it to work. Sad [:(]

Your card is already in the list:
     Quoting: graphics.config
    ; ATI 9800 2 0 2 9700 1 0 2 9600SE 1 1 1 9600 1 1 1 9550 1 2 2 9500 1 1 1 9250 1 2 1 9200 1 2 1 9100 1 2 1 8500 1 1 1
For fur and and grass you will have to change the corresponding number for your card (bold marked line) in the middle column. From now 2 to 1 or even 0. I don't recommend 0 though because this might reduce the overall performance of the game too much. See what works best. See the first page of this thread for further information on the numbers and their function.

Re: How to use the graphics.config file?

I've just come to install BW2 once again after a year or so break and since then I have had new bits for my computer, I scraped the old Socket A, now on AM2 etc...

    I have a 8500GT, I have tried adding
    8500         3      0         3
    GeForce8         3      0         3
    8500GT         3      0         3

But I've no luck unlocking all those little boxes in the Custom graphics menu...
    Any advice please?
    Thanks in advance...

EDIT: Went through and changed everything in the list to 303 setting and that sorted it :D

It's because the line 8500 is already in use by the ATI Radeon 8500, so you have to either change that line to the values you want or delete the line and add the one under NVIDIA. Wink [;)]

Hi there! This is my first time posting on these boards, so i apolgize if i do it incorrectly.

I also have an Nvidia Geforce 8500gt and when i adjust the lines and try to save/exit it tells me this. Also im using windows vista if that matters.

    Cannot create the C:\Program Files\Lionhead Studios\Black & White2\Data\graphics.config file.

Make sure the path and filename are correct.

any suggestons? (im very pc stupid so its prolly somthing simple that im missing)

Re: How to use the graphics.config file?

Welcome to the boards Delly. Smily [:)]

I don't have Vista, so I don't know what restriction it uses on so called "system files". Wink [;)] One thing I could think of is to make sure the file is not write protected which can normally be turned on/off in the properties of the file in question. To reach those properties right click on the file and chose the entry from the context menu. It could of course also be more complicated and has to do with user rights, but I don't know how Vista is handling this either.

Also make sure not to use a Office Editor like Words when editing the file, the simple plain notepad will do it and is saver concerning file formats. Wink [;)]

Re: How to use the graphics.config file?

    Thanks for the help.

I actually figured it out. Im not sure what the differnce is but i had some issues editing World of Warcraft files and Blizzard helped me with that and we put WoW directly on the C: drive rather then under program files. I tried this for the LionHead Studios folder and then made a shortcut to the desktop from there for the game. Was able to easily alter the files for graphics.config and the game plays perfectly!

Thank you so much for the assistance.

Re: How to use the graphics.config file?

Here Iwas thinking that I might have to wait a while longer until I can afford the latest high end graphics card to take advantage of the the unique level of realism in this game. Regarding, fur, beard,  hair and grass.

Anyway, considering my  ATI RADEON 9550 graphics card. I accessed the ATI site for the latest driver upgrade. Which was this April.

Nothing was apparently diffferent when I had alook at the display options on the game after rebooting it.

Then went into the data folder for the game found the Graphic Sys file. Opening it with NotePad. at this stage, I changed the first value from 1 to 3 and left the other two as they were. Which I believe were 2 and 2.

I booted up the game again and noticed that I could now turn on Vegetation. What ever difference that means.

So back at the Windows desktop. I went back to the same file and made it 303.

What do those values mean anyway?

Why is the middle value low?

What if I make that one 3 also.

I booted up the game again hoping my computer wouldn't blow up in my face and was surprised to see that every single option on the graphic display that was previously greyed out was now available.

In game, everything looked pratically almost as G o o d [Good] I had seen in screenshots and other pictures.

The fur effects were nice, the swaying grass very pleasnt.... combined with other numerous new effects that just gave the game a whole new level of depth.

Though I'm not sure if it could be any better. As I look at the up-right walking wolf creature too closley, the fur sometimes looks alittle translucent. Though, that may be the full extent of the software capability.

I'm very happy with it. The result

I just hope my graphic card isn't suffering for this.

Is this legally safe for my card?

Was there a reason the game couldn't access my card automatically?

Funny thing is that I noticed that I could turn on the FUR option after installing the patchs. Though the difference wasn't there until I changed the values on the Graphics Sys file.

What do all those options mean any way?

For instance, I'm not sure about anti-aliasing.

I don't notice much difference betweent chosing highest or lowest setting for that one.

    What does BLOOMING do?

    How does VEGETATION make difference.

Anyway, I very much grafteful for this advice as I would still be otherwise experiencing half the fun.

Re: How to use the graphics.config file?

As transferred to the third island, I started to notice a different degradation in the graphics.

Firstly I started to notice a translucent outline that had steadily became clearer around the outline of my creature.

I also noticed that when I re-opened the control bar on the objectives panel. That some of the pictures on the little boxes lost their resolution. looking more like dots and lines.

Then it got much worse, as the options panel  failed to appear and the whole screen started to flicker.

Then I noticed the options, not th epanle, just the words at the bottom.

The Save screen appeared as series of thatched red lines on a box and the screen saver that shows while saving appeared as a thatched blotch of blue and green.

    Is that bad?

Is that the effects of overheated Graphics card.

I only hope it's not permanent damage.

The graphic card you use was not meant for doing this detail level you now forced it to do, but it may as well suffer from hardware features that simply are missing in this generation fo graphic cards. If you want to know more about this, go ahead and google for Pixel or Vortex Shaders on graphic cards. Most of the effects are done with them nowadays.

If you experience an increase in graphic failures, it seems pretty obvious that one or the other component is suffering from "overstraining", mainly overheating. It must not be your graphic card, but it is in most cases. Wink [;)] While it shell not do a permanent damage to your components, the overall lifetime will be drastically reduced when running at the limits of your hardware.

For previous question about the options and what they do, I would say to take a look in your B&W2 game manual. Wink [;)] The numbers of the options in the graphic.config are described in the top of the file itself. The most important number for visual quality is the middle one (at least if I recall corectly) because it controls the Shaders (see above). The Shader quality make the biggest difference in graphics for B&W2 I would say.

    My fault for trying,

Though Graphic cards aren't dear as I thought  they would be.

I think $400-600 could be the most I would be paying for the latest highend card,

i can look it up and pass the link to you for that item

Ps it best to start a whole new thread on a new subject

added note: MOB Video chips (GPU) are not that great to use! they are low end, buy a Video card that match your MOB Slot for them with 512mb or more to the video card

The 82945G is the last row in the graphics.config. So these numbers are the ones to change, especially the middle of the three controls the fur/grass shaders.

Although I have to agree with ChiefADFP that this (old) onboard graphic shitsets are very low-end and will not produce a playable experience when turning up the detail!

You should indeed look for a dedicated graphic card that fits your mainboard. Although I would not necessarily say you need one with 512 MB video memory or even more.Huh? [:^)] Right now I would always suggest the Radeon HD4850 because it is cheap and has the best price to performance relation.
