    Re: A New World, Path to Oakfield

       "Heeey over therrre! You twinsh ain't getting across thish bridge today! Ha ha ha -hic- hah!"  "Aw, shuttit Mugsy.  They kin see the bridge is broked, yer hammered if ya think they can't"  "Yeuu ar drunk tooo, Gormo, don't crash my party!"  A third bandit pointed and laughed, but couldn't seem to do so and make words at the same time.  Maze wanted to just shoot them, but his powder was still wet.  In any case, these were sentries (albeit poor ones), and sooner or later, their absence would be noticed and the other bandits would be alerted.  Either way, they posed no threat to him.  Even if they tried to shoot him, it was obvious they could not hit him even if they tried.  The thought apparently hadn't occured to them, though.  They just stood at their end of the bridge yelling nonsense mixed with obscenities.  Stepping to the edge of the broken bridge, Maze saw no clear way to get across.  It was far too wide to jump, and even intoxicated, the bandits would hamper any effort he made to close the gap with rope or other materials.  "Heyy over there!  Still there, right?  The only way yer gettin' ter Oakfield is if ya jump an' turn into a fish!"  Mugsy joined in. "Yeah, jump. Go for it! What could happen?"  "He could die" Gormo offered.  "Shut it, Gormo! Jump! Jump! Jump!"  they were all chanting it now.  As little appeal as the advice of drunk bandits who probably wanted him dead held for Maze, he had no alternatives.  Taking a deep breath, he leaped off the bridge, fervently hoping that the water was deep enough.

    Re: A New World, Path to Oakfield

    ~~~~Firstly, I plan to continue past the game's storyline and explore some hints that I think were made, and secondly,I can't replicate the exact ending due to some early choices of mine.~~~~
       The water was cold, smelled like fish, and tasted bitter as it engulfed Maze in a plume of bubbles.  But it was deep enough, and that is the most important factor right now, he thought.  About thirty meters off, a small shore was visible.  Dragging himself onto land, he heard two things.  The first was a sobbing villager looking worriedly towards the entrance of a nearby cave.  The second sound emnated from a statue on the cliff face. "Oi Hero! Come here and kiss my stony ***! Ahahaha! Come on, have a go at meh- not that you could hit a castle wall!"  It continued to rant, but Maze ignored it. He had more pressing matters.  The villager turned towards him, and ran up, grabbing his jacket and begging.  "Please, you gotta 'elp me! My son, he- he got taken by hobbes an' I don't know what to do. I can't fight, and I know that they'll do something terrible to him if you don't stop them! Please, please help him!"  Maze agreed quicklu and the villager followed him to the cave.  Off to the side, the gargoyle statue continued to mock him.  "Watch out for the hobbes!  If you trip over one of the bones in there you'll break your little neck, eheheh! Try not to stab yourself with your sword- pointy part goes out!"  Turning slowly, Maze raised his pistol.  The gargoyle made no further wisecracks, unless its shattered and chipped pieces were wise.
    Re: A New World, Path to Oakfield
    So far I definetaly prefere your old story about Maze because it was your own original idea. This one however you are just writing down the Fable 2 story but in more detail. Rememer it is Maze your writing about - NOT the Fable 2 Hero!
    Sorry to sound harsh but I had to say it.
    Re: A New World, Path to Oakfield
    Repeating my earlier comment, this is in part a set up.  I plan to continue past the Fable 2 story,  but since I started prior to the game's release from a childhood perspective, I will at least follow the game's basic story (with some changes where I want to set things up for later events).  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
    Re: A New World, "nasty, brutish, and short"
    ~~~~Orakaius has an archive of links to G o o d [Good] fanfic that you should take a look at.  Some of the best stuff is older, and would be hard to find on your own.~~~~

       The hobbes' cave was sightly moist, had a sandy floor, and echoed slightly with each step.  The worst part so far was the smell.  It was sickly, like corpses in various states of decay were rotting nearby and their scents were wafting towards you from every direction.  Maze held in his stomach's contents through sheer force of will, but the villager Garett was not as fortunate.  As they stepped into a wider chamber, the cause of the stench became clear.  Rotting bodies were strewn across the room, some fresh, some half-eaten, and others that had long since decomposed into bones and rags that smelled of death.  Garet turned a pale shade of green and his stomach relinquished its last meal onto the ground.  Wiping his mouth with his sleeve, Garett mumbled an apology and turned away.  Maze was not annoyed with him; even the greatest of Heroes had reacted similarly when faced with his first massacre, that of his own village.  Pulling himself together,  Garett motioned that he was ready to continue, but apparently not yet ready to speak.  "Don't worry, your son will be fine.  Let's just find him and get out of here, then you won't have to deal woth the smell."  Maze carefully sounded indifferent  but he secretly had his doubts about the boy.  Hobbes were brutal creatures, and there had been dark rumors of their dealings with children that even Maze had heard as a child.

    Re: A New World, "nasty, brutish, and short"

       Drip, drip, drip ... the droplets falling from the ceiling plunked into small pools of water on the stone floor below.  Footsteps echoed dimly off the walls as Maze and Garett cautiously made their way through the slightly labyrinthine cave.  Grunts and snorting laghter could be heard from a distance, but the echoes made it impossible to tell from where.  "Gwa haha ha ha! hee hee he he he!"  Garett's face lit up at once.  "That's him! that's my son! He's alive, he's really alive!"  Without waiting another moment, he dashed in front of Maze and charged ahead into the cave.  "Wait- there might be hobbes, and we-" Maze protested to no avail.  The idiot's going to get himself killed, running off alone . . .  There was no helping it, however- he would have to try to save the poor fool.   His sword unsheathed, Maze followed the villager's voice.  "Is  that you son? Where are you?"  Closer.  "What? Wait, no this isn't right!"  Just around the next corner . . . "Augh! Nooo!" Crack.  Crunch. Thump.  It was too late.  Squatting over Garett's bloody corpse, the hobbe gave a demented hoot of laughter before charging Maze.  Despite its bloody mouth and recently blood-spattered mace, there was something childlike about the little monster in its exhuberant glee and . . . its clothes . . . Maze saw.  Unlike the customary hodgepodge of household items, this hobbe was wearing the clothes of a young boy, torn in places where the hobbe was too big to fit in them.  Ignoring the implication for the moment, Maze waited in a ready position to strike.  The hobbe obliged, going straight for him, mace held high.  A single swipe of his sword separated head from body, and blood spurted out of the neck, splattering all over the cave wall.  Wiping his sword clean, Maze heard grunted war cries and squeals approaching from further on in the cave.  It was time to leave.

    Re: A New World, "nasty, brutish, and short"

    ~~~~My computer decided to play "hide the connection" last night, and just after I made a post, it winked out...  Rather than express my feelings about that, I'll just post this, and hope it holds out.~~~~
       They were both dead.  It had been his job to protect them, and he'd failed.  True, the villager had disobeyed Maze and ran after the sound of his son, but Maze knew that he should have seen that one coming.  "Graaawr! Huhuhuhu!"  Now was not the time for reflection, more hobbes were on their way.  Three appeared from around a corner and stopped suddenly.  Maze's downturned face hid eyes that were aflame with anger.  It was mostly for himself, but that didn't stop his fingers from crackling with energy, or faint lines of blue from appearing on his body like arcane tattoos rising from beneath the surface.  Lightning flowed in arcs from one fingertip to the next.  More hobbes had appeared in the entrance to the next chamber and watched stupidly from afar, but not stupidly enough to come closer.  Raising his head, his eyes met those of a hobbe about twenty meters away.  The creature's eyes went wide, and it fled.  Jumping over its fellows behind it, it scrambled away to escape the young wizard's wrath.  The last thing it felt was a surge of energy approaching from behind, consuming everything around it in a writhing sea of electricity.
       "Aaargh!" Maze yelled, furious at the hobbe, furious with anything and everything he saw, heard, and felt at that moment.  He unleashed the tide of his anger through his fingers, sending every last pulse of energy cascading through his fingers at the hapless hobbes before him.  The entire passage seemed to glow blue around him, but his vision grew darker as the light grew brighter.  He fell to his knees, drained of energy, and soon everything faded to black.
    Re: A New World, Out of the darkness
    ~~~~If you haven't already, check out Marcasite's story,  Sorrow's Lament .  He takes his time with his work, and this is a remake of an already great story.  Anyway, here comes another small piece of the story.  For those of you who don't like my tendency to follow the storyline, hang in there, I just need to go through the main plot before I build off of it.~~~~

          Drip, drip, drip .  The droplets seemed to resonate with the throbbing in his head as they fell into a pool of cold water.  A torch flickered dimly  from the cave wall, illuminating its immediate surroundings.  Pulling himself to his feet, Maze wobbled slightly before finding his balance.  Pulling the torch from its bracket on the wall, he proceeded forward until his refection in a still pool caught his attention.  His hair, although always light, had become the ashen white color of long burning coals.  His face was inscribed with faint Will lines, and his blue eyes glowed more brightly than usual.  It was a familiar look for him, but one from another time.  He would hardly blend in at the local tavern now, and posing as an out of work trader would no longer be possible when he reached Oakfield.   It was a troublesome development, as it would surely attract unwanted attention, but there was nothing to be done about it.  He had overused Will, and it had left its mark on him.

         The hobbes were nowhere to be seen, presumably because the ones that had not been electrocuted had fled for their lives after seeing their comrades burnt to a crisp.  One less problem to deal with ,  Maze thought.  At the end of the passage, an old ladder could be seen leading up to a trapdoor.  Pushing up on it, his effort ws rewarded with a dousing of icy water and the smell of fresh rain.  A puddle had collected over the trapdoor in the rain, and he hadn't thought to open it slowly.  "I'm just lucky that it wasn't a trap . . ." he chided himself.  Carelessness could get a Hero killed, and he deserved what he got for his.  Taking a look around outside the stable he had emerged into,  Maze heard voices nearby.  "This is pointless, let's get a drink!"  The bandits were still at the bridge, though apparently more sober now.  "No, it's our job to guard the bridge." replied the second bandit.   "But it's broken- no one can cross it!"  protested the first.  "Didn't say it was a hard job." came the retort.  "Oh come on, lets -" Crack!   Maze almost rolled his eyes as he shot the whining bandit.  The powder in his gun had dried enough in the cave, and he was glad of it.  That conversation could have gone on forever . . .  "Oi, what do you think yer doin'?!?"  yelled the departed rogue's partner.  "Getting rid of a headache." he replied, knocking the startled bandit off the bridge with a well-aimed fireball.
