Re: All aboard the JazzX Lifeboat!

This very educational film deserves to be rescued:

Film Form: The Vernacular of Cinema

    by alainmoreau

    Genre: Filmmaking Tutorial

    Duration: 14.5 minutes - released Wednesday 13th December 2006, 21 ratings, 5 star average

BBFC rating: (12) - for violent scenes

    ***** stars

I normally dock stars for use of uncredited music, but the one track used here sounded homemade, so I'll let it off.

    To the film itself:

Very educational, I agreed with most of the points - although it's sometimes simplistic to say things like "this is a hero weeping tears - we give him some dignity here by using the camera below his eye level".

It could easily be a villain whose motives are being explored (maybe they lost a loved one and have been consumed by revenge).

The pacing example (part 2) went on too long at the end with the repeated stabbing shots - it was better than the first effort but still too long in my opinion.

I agree with the notion that it's about selling to the viewer the emotional message. That's why - as we see in Quantum of Solace - too many closeups, far from taking you into the action, merely result in too much confusion and the message becomes lost. A mixture of wideshots and closeups are needed so that the viewer is emotionally involved and also knows exactly what's going on.

Anyway - an excellent film. Very educational - I learned quite a lot from it.

"The Best Friend" by AlainMoreau gets into the lifeboat:

    The Best Friend

    by AlainMoreau

    Genre: Arthouse Horror

Duration: nearly 8 minutes - released Saturday 10th November 2007, 6 ratings, 4.83 star average

BBFC rating: (15) - for nudity, one scene of a sexual nature and graphic violence

    **** stars

A disturbing film with a couple of problems.

I thought the narrator was being ironic when we see a male character (who I assumed to be the best friend) having sex with the female (presumed to be his best friend's wife). Later, we find out that the character on the screen was actually the narrator's friend after all. Poor character introduction caused that one.

The acting during the crucial confrontation was very flat and uninteresting. It would also have helped if it didn't all sound like it was still in narrator mode. Maybe having the lines delivered further away from the mic would have made the distinction more clear.

On the plus side, the story was well told and often visually very striking.

I wonder what this lot would sound like waiting to get on a lifeboat:

    At A Dead Stop

    by scottmccollum

    Genre: Gothic Horror Monster Comedy

    Duration: 2.5 minutes - released Wednesday 8th March 2006, 72 ratings, 4.85 star average

BBFC rating: U - suitable for all

    ***** stars

A funny film, very well acted and well paced. G o o d [Good] writing which successfully packed some cracking jokes into the 2 and a half minutes.

The gothic horror stereotypes were played to perfection.

PS. It sounds like there's an F-word near the end, but the line actually goes "you stupid talking dog"!

    Next in the lifeboat:

    Punk the Zombie

    by nahton

    Genre: Silent Superhero Comedy

Duration: just over 7.5 minutes - released Monday 25th June 2007, 20 ratings, 4.9 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for mild gore

    **** stars

Not sure what happened at the end there, and for a lot of this film it looked like it was just going to be a series of pranks on zombies using teleportation and telekinesis.

But it got pretty witty in the way the superpowers were used, and I saw that most of this film was a glimpse into the future of what might go wrong.

Interesting bit of silent film with G o o d [Good] Fable music backing it.

Here's another unlikely survivor of the TMO shipwreck:

    Big Coach

    by davart

    Genre: Cowboy Morality Fable

    Duration: nearly 5 minutes - Monday March 13th 2006, 16 ratings, 4.88 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for some violent scenes and disturbing images

    ***** stars

It was 4-stars for most of this, I liked the guitar and the way it changed riffs at key moments - it looked like it could have used a VO narration as well.

But the special effects at the end were fantastic! They raised this film up to top marks.

Re: All aboard the JazzX Lifeboat!

The queue is empty again - thanks to your suggestions 39 films have been rescued in the last 6 days that otherwise wouldn't be.

The total number of films in my library now stands at 839

There are 22 days left until all films on this site sink into Davy Jones's Locker forever. If there's a film you think doesn't deserve that fate then tell me about it.

In the meantime, I will revert back to sequel-finding mode where I rescue the remaining sequels for films that are already in my archive.

Just a reminder that TMU has launched its own search and rescue operation - between the pair of us, I'm hoping we'll collect a large amount of quality films representative of this game. Post in both threads to maximise the chances of that happening.

I've removed the existing episodes of "Privates In The Blur" from my harddrive and replaced them with a single director's cut; with every episode edited together. At 2 hours 42 minutes long, it's surely the longest complete work of cinema ever made with The Movies!

The directors involved in this massive project were Riggs, Lukavey, Samyhouse, Melicendre and Gilga. Demarreur was co-scriptwriter with Riggs.

    Well worth rescueing!

Here's another one I've decided to rescue:

Temporary Night Musical (Sonic Oblivion) (Music Video)

    by nukester & "The Twilights"

    Genre: House

Duration: nearly 3 minutes - released Friday 17th August 2007, 49 ratings, 4.94 star average

BBFC rating: U - suitable for all

    GOVERNMENT HEALTH WARNING:
This film contains strong strobe lighting effects for most of its running time

    **** stars

Just a bunch of chicks clubbing - but it was done really well.

I tried to get a strobe effect for one of my films, but on export it came out painfully clunky and slow. I wonder what the secret is...

This film reminds me of a programme they used to put on TV very early on a Sunday morning (like 3AM) - basically, they just took the cameras around the nightclubs and all it was was simply watching the clubbers dancing. This film evoked that atmosphere in spades.
