I don't know. I made a folder like in the tutorial, but everytime I save something in the folder, there doesn't happen anything in the game. The things are in the folder, but never comes to the game.

No, but that's because it's named something different. Once I saved some VO's in this: C:/Documents and Settings/Niclas/Lionhead Studios/The Movies/data/textures/overlays I have made the overlays myself like I said before.

As you view the folder, press the "Print Screen Button" located next to the F12 key. Once you have done that, open paint and click "Cntrl+V" to paste the image. Save that image and host in on a site like imagebucket [google it]. Once you have an [*img][*/Img] [without *] code, paste it here and let me help you work out this problem -tiger

What if I want to make multiple overlays?
    I can't name them all
"overlay_animo_v00" because they will overwrite one another.

Where should I make the change in the name?

Every overlay just has to be in the following format: overlay_blank_v00

In the title of that overlay, where it says blank, you can put whatever you want. Just make sure it isn't too long. Wink [;)]

What did you do to add the folders? Right click in C:/Program Files/Lionhead Studios Ltd/Data and make a folder. Call it Textures. Then inside that folder make an Overlays folder.
If you tried that...what didn't work exactly with that? Did you try put the overlays in that folder and they're not showing up in the game? If so make sure they're DDS and are named properly.

    Re: Overlays Made Simple v2

If you will look on Nvidia site, you will find a couple of '.dds' file programs that allow you to view a thumbnail of .dds on the windows desktop... and an addon to Photo shop to save your transparent overlay as a .dds.

As for making a transparent overlay with photoshop, start with a new file and choose the background to be transparent.  Then cut and paste the things you want in your Transparent overlay and save it as a .dds file.

Remember...for correct aspect  of your overlay... start with a pic 912x512 new file with a transparent background.   Right before you save as a .dds file, RESIZE to 512x512.  It will look squashed, but the game will show it correctly.  And save the file as the original file in the photoshop defaut format or jpg or something else.  I cannot seem to edit a transparent overlay after its been exported as a .dds.

Animated overlays guy's! Ok, i know they clog up your texture folder,Stick out tongue [:P] but i was hoping for some tips on creating them!

Ok, iv'e got some creative methods, such as simply animating scenes in max and then capturing them with Wink or something! Smily [:)] But seriously, am i missing an simple yet fundamental app or software than can do this realtively easy1 Smoker [:zmoker:]

There is no such thing as easy animation...   I do all my animations the old fashion way, with photoshop and individually create each frame... placing each moving piece on the Cell... and then saving the individual overlay....  It can be and is time consuming.  If you have Flash, it is possible to break an animimation up and export the Flash animation screens to Photoshop... but still takes some time... but there are other ways.

    Re: Overlays Made Simple v2

If we're talking full-screen animated overlays (ie. no transparency), and you're using some kind of tool to create the animation:

    1. Export the animation to AVI, at 10 frames per second.
    2. Use VirtualDUB to save the frames as an image sequence (in TGA or BMP format).  To get the images the right size, VirtualDUB has filters for resizing (I recommend 512x256 for exporting in online quality).
    3. Use DDS Converter to convert the images to DDS in a batch.

If the overlays require transparency, you can't do it this way.  Either your application has to support exporting as an image sequence with transparency intact, or you have to do it in Photoshop or GIMP frame by frame.

You can often streamline the process (for transparent animated overlays) by using Photoshop Actions.  Or by using your animation tool to create separate AVIs or image sequences for the alpha channel.  When I made the opening credits for "To TMO", for example, I used VideoStudio to export two AVIs.  The first had the colours I wanted.  The second was in greyscale, and matched what I knew I'd need for the alpha (white where a pixel is solid, black where it's transparent).  Then it was just a matter of copying each corresponding frame in Photoshop; first into the RGB channel, then into the alpha channel.

    Re: Overlays Made Simple v2

Hate to bump this thread, but I've found something that might also work with converting overlays to .dds... http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb206244.aspx

I don't think anyone has posted about this yet, but I would feel really stupid if someone has.

    It's also from Microsoft, which is G o o d [Good]...

Edit: Now that I look at it, I'm not sure how you can aquire it... oops.
