ps. I got rid of the annoying buzz in my V.O.'s btw. It was as simple as unplugging my laptop, and letting it run on batteries while I was recording. The buzz was coming from the charger. Side effect of that is that I have a motivation to get my V.O.'s done faster now, so my battery won't run down.

G o o d [Good] one - my problem is with the mic itself, I get around it by knocking out all frequencies below 100hz in the EQ phase.

Hopefully not anymore. I've just splashed out on a nifty portable digital recorder. Which means I'll be able to record VOs and music without the computer even being on - does 4-tracks.

That's my Xmas present to myself this year. They kindly threw in some headphones, a carrying case, a tripod and 4GB of memory for nothing.

Re: All aboard the JazzX Lifeboat!

This is your 2 week warning.

14 days until all TMO films are wiped out.

If you know of any TMO films that you think should be saved from this fate, post them here. I'll watch them and tell you whether they made the lifeboat or not (4-stars is the required score).

Members of TMU can also submit their choices to the TMU rescue project which is stickied in the TMOA forum.

If you value the history of this site then please help us to document it by saving these relics which might soon be lost forever.

PS. Amazingly, "The French Democracy" was not in my archive, but it's still in the charts! Thanks to my routine reviews of these crap charts, I get to see and keep this film just in the nick of time.

    JazzX Lifeboat Passenger Manifest

Here is the complete list of films that are on the lifeboat. If you can think of a film that's not there and should be then post the title in this thread.

    11 days to go.

Hmm. Although it's been a (long) time since I was active around these parts, I feel it would be a shame if Terror Tales - of Chief Concern by HyperGnome was lost to the mists of time. This guy only ever released one movie, but I was rather taken with it at the time. I think it's the first movie I ever gave 5 stars too, in fact. As the name may suggest, it's a 'tales from the crypt' style setup, but as far as i know it was the first one out there on TMO, being released way back in the beginning in Nov'05. Bear in mind that this was back before such luxuries as freecam, modding and overlay work, and in those days Voice Acting was considered a novelty worth watching for alone.

None the less it tells, I think, it's story well and has stood the test of time better than most. I'll even overlook that it's the only thing that stopped me getting the #1 spot in horror back thenWink [;)]

    Haha

My PM box is the only link required - some of these films are already extinct outside my two harddrives (all of them were backed up yesterday). All are available to anyone on request, and that's the only way one will be able to see most of them after December 5th.

I might try and make a tie-in TMU channel where I upload the featured films from my monthly Movie Vault thread. The films will be replaced each month on the site.

A very G o o d [Good] recommendation for a film which surely would have disappeared forever:

    Terror Tales: Of Chief Concern

    by HyperGnome

Genre: 80s Horror TV Show Supernatural Western

    Duration: 10.5 minutes - released Sunday 20th November 2005, 242 ratings, 4.79 star average

BBFC rating: (12) - for violence and mild gore

    ***** stars

A very G o o d [Good] film which, despite having no freecam and being in the infancy of TM film making, successfully edits together the preset shots in a deliciously atmospheric way. There's no doubt this filmmaker knows how to make a movie, not just in the shots selected but in the pacing of the story as well.

Stock music is very well used and appropriate to the scenes in this film also.

If those weren't enough, the movie is a one-man acting tour-de-force! By using a touch of pitch shift and lots of altering of tone of voice, the actor successfully pulled off all the parts (although one of the Indians sounded a bit like Kermit the frog) - the Clint Eastwood impression was at times uncanny! This is someone who should have been one of the great TMO voice artists without question.

The story proper was very G o o d [Good], much better than the trashy and cheesy host (perfect!) who looked like an unsuccessful auditionee for The Rocky Horror Show. His puns were hilariously and entertainingly lame in the best traditions of 80s TV horror show presenters.

Great fun overall with the comedic bookends complementing the much more serious horror tale in the middle.

Thankyou. Smily [:)] But it's not just my films that are on there ...

There's NOW films like this (thanks for the suggestion, top drawer):

    A Woman is a Woman

    by postmodernchuck

    Genre: Homosexual Transvestite Character Study

    Duration: 6.5 minutes - released Sunday 18th June 2006, 148 ratings, 4.85 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for mild sexuality

    ***** stars

Very well written and actually moving. The camera moves and the overall fluidity of the piece kind of wash over you and absorb you into this character's world.

I don't think in 3 years I've seen a proper attempt to get under the skin of a transvestite/transexual character. It's always been played for laughs and in two dimensions.

This film is a journey into the mind of an essentially lonely character who wears his female clothes everyday like an actor wears a costume. He's clearly using that as his mask, his persona. I liked the idea of his job being a cabaret singer as well. It re-enforces that his life is mostly theatre with nothing else in it, and no real hope of anything else.

G o o d [Good] music choices complete the package.

    ... well almost.

I think this film deserves a stand-out VO performance.

It would surely have been one of the most difficult roles ever attempted by anyone from this community - the potential for unintentional laughs would be sky high. Only a professional actor (and a G o o d [Good] one at that) would have had any chance at pulling this off. And yet, it's sad that we never got to see a star being born. Anyone who could do this convincingly would not only have automatically become the best voice actor these films have ever seen, but on their way to great things beyond too.

As it is though, more than an excellent film.

My verdict on "Nothing" to follow.

And Del's other choice gets in:

    Nothing

    by postmodernchuck

    Genre: Relationship Breakdown Analysis

    Duration: 4 minutes - released Thursday 26th July 2007, 50 ratings, 4.92 star average

BBFC rating: (12) - for some nudity and sexuality

    **** stars

It was mostly well-played and the disturbing throbbing visual effect successfully made me agitated like the characters. But my one frustration with this film is that we never got to know what they were arguing about! For all we know, it could be that one of them didn't do the dishes when it was their turn last night!

The film reminded me of Ian Fleming's concept of the "Quantum of Solace" - this film seems to occur at exactly the point when the last smallest unit of kindness and respect disappears from the relationship and it really is definitely all over.

As an aside, I recognised this tricky script from The Voice acting competition (2007) - this film brings me no nearer to what those words were supposed to be about!

Visually striking and generally well played, but I found this frustratingly abstract. The characters never really got to the point.

I decided to complete the available postmodernchuck collection:

    Mastercheese Theater Presents

    by postmodernchuck

    Genre: Poetry Comedy

Duration: just over 4 minutes - released Monday 30th June 2008, 23 ratings, 4.65 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for one mild expletive

    **** stars

Lol - "toon in next time" - by the end, the English accent (which actually started off really well) was ... well it looked like the actor had given up trying.

The poem itself reminded me of Douglas Adams's Vogon poetry - thoroughly bad but funny as well. I liked the way he cleared the pub out!

The VO level could have been higher for the poet, I had to turn my volume up for that part.

The opening was very BBC 4 - I liked it.

An entertaining piece of froth all in all.

    These directors are:

    postmodernchuck

    josephkw

    Babar23

    edlup56

    icthusadmr

    sherwinliu

    sisch

    TheFlyingDuDe

    MefuneAkira

and just tonight, the latest Prufrock winner (which prompted me to make this decision):

    meowan!

All of these have won my highest award, and I'm taking no chances by not watching the other films they've made.

    Re: JazzX Lifeboat Passenger Manifest

I've begun watching and reviewing all of the Prufrock winning directors' remaining TMO work.

    Earlier, I finished postmodernchuck's output.

    JosephKW was next:

Not going in the lifeboat are the following films:

"15 Second Movie" which scored ** stars
"Life Buddy" which scored * star for non-recognition of musicians used
and "Angels Dance" which scored *** stars

    Here's a G o o d [Good] one though:

    Miserere Nobis

    by josephkw

    Genre: Religious Apocalypse Crime Drama

    Duration: 12 minutes - released Sunday 17th February 2008, 33 ratings, 5 star average

BBFC rating: (12) - for violence

    ***** stars

A classy film - very suspenseful use of the camera and effective eerie music in the opening. A G o o d [Good] twist too.

The VO was very G o o d [Good] for all characters and the script provided them with some G o o d [Good] lines to say.

    A great job overall.

That completes josephkw's TMO output, Babar23 has only one film up which I've already archived.

    Next up will be edlup56.

BBFC rating: (15) - for bad language

    ***** stars

A G o o d [Good] little story with lots to say in its running time and the ending was nice too with a killer last line!

A nice contrast between the hooker and the world-weary aged once-wannabe writer. Their characters were well delineated and well played.

    A very engaging film.

    Re: JazzX Lifeboat Passenger Manifest

I complete my Sherwinliu TMO collection with this film:

    The Afflicted (Re-release)

    by sherwinliu

    Genre: Dystopian Psychological Drama

    Duration: 16 minutes - released Sunday 4th June 2006, 34 ratings, 4.91 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for one graphic scene of vomiting

    **** stars

An interesting film with some G o o d [Good] acting - difficult for the more emotionless characters, as that can lead to a monotonous boredom for the audience. Fortunately, Palia was a breath of fresh air for the viewer as well as in the story.

The premise, of course, falls completely on its backside! A world where emotion has been largely eradicated would have none of the natural drives - either lust or love - that lead to conceptions and births. It would be dead within a couple of generations. So, one must assume that IVF is the most common form of conception in an Aldous Huxley kind of way in this world; the state determines how many people it needs and genetically alters the foetuses to suit the tasks required of them in adult life. But even that is an emotional drive by those in charge - the will to survive, or care about the survival of one's own species. So that wouldn't add up either.

Quite a moving ending though as he comes to realise that he's lost something very special. If any government did try this genetic program out, it would be a matter of a couple of weeks before everyone could see it would never work. Many people would not be able to deal with their losses and would see it for the bs that it is.

Another plot hole was Palia's reason for being at The Center. We're told she's there to be taught how to hide her emotions just like she managed before. So what's the point?! I wasn't quite sure of the historian's role. He seemed more like a shrink. If his role is to study emotional people, then throwing them out when they exhibit excessive emotional behaviour is hardly logical, reasonable or scientific. Isn't that what he's supposed to be studying?!

Still - this dystopian drama was an interesting watch all the same with G o o d [Good] editing and pacing.

Next up will be sisch's remaining TMO movies: "Industry 101 Sound Contest" and "City Life".

I've chosen to skip "Reflection Part 2" as part 1 is no longer available and is, according to the filmmaker, essential for understanding part 2. So that one doesn't make the lifeboat.

    Re: JazzX Lifeboat Passenger Manifest

This collection of three short films gets into the lifeboat (what a crap title though!):

Sisch's Industry 101 Sound Design Contest Entry (3 films)

    by sisch

    Genres:
    Supernatural Horror
    Crime Thriller
    Science Fiction

    Duration: 9 minutes - released Saturday 23rd February 2008, 22 ratings, 5 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for action violence

    ***** stars

What a boring title for such an excellent film!

Each of these three shorts could be expanded into a larger feature film. The first and third ones are very atmospheric. The second one reminded me a bit of near the end of Goldfinger where Bond is chained to an atmomic bomb and all we can hear is Odd-Job's footsteps on the metal gantry as he comes down the flights of stairs while Bond desperately struggles to break free in time!

Sound design is the most ignored part of movie making with this software. Many are content with the default ambience, or drown their film in music negating any real need for ambient sound.

This excellent piece of work shows just how important it can be in creating mood and atmosphere.

As short films, they do their job without having any "conclusion" to each story, but it's all about the atmosphere .. and there's bucketloads of that here. I was sucked in so much that I groaned when each story finished prematurely.

Don't be fooled by the dry title - this is worth watching even if you have no interest in the finer points of sound design.

    Re: JazzX Lifeboat Passenger Manifest

"City Life" by sisch scored *** stars and won't be on the lifeboat.

Sidy's films have all been done, so the next director will be GiorgioKiwi with "The Visitor" and "Run!"

    Running onto the lifeboat:

RUN (aka. Run!) (German with English subtitles)

    by GiorgioKiwi

    Genre: Arthouse Character Study

    Duration: 6 minutes - released Monday 4th June 2007, 32 ratings, 4.66 star average

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for some adult themes

    **** stars

One star has been docked from the 5 I was going to give this for only mentioning the website from which the music was obtained and not the musicians themselves.

    Moving on ...

A fast pace and interesting visual ideas really helped make this very engaging to watch. The VO was also very well delivered - I particularly liked the camping scene and the way her lines were handled! [the part with her dramatic gestures was perfectly mirrored by the VO]

Very G o o d [Good] editing with "the running man" supplying continuity to the film too.

    I liked this alot.
