As we've yet to hear most of the features of Fable III, I'll be describing it in Fable II terms so there will be some assumptions made about the gameplay. In this mode four players compete in a large area to gain renown enough to claim the crown and become king of Albion. Each player will start with a pool of experience to build a mid ranged character with, and will choose from the henchman models (to speed up the game and cut down lag). The players decide how much renown will be needed to win a game then are placed in the world at the corners of the map with rusty weapons. Finally safety will always be off in this game mode.
The Map corners are a graveyard full of shadows, hollow men and a Banshee, a bandit camp full of bandits, highwaymen and Spire Soldiers (Commandant with a highwayman hat), a forest full of hobbes, balverines and beetles, and a dungeon full of beetles, shadows and bandits.
The Village is situated in the centre of the map, and is the place to get quests, buy weapons and potions and interact with villagers. The village is full of repeatable quest givers as well as villagers and shops to buy better weapons, augments and potions from. Each player has their own house marked on the map for them. Players are invisible to each other while in the village.
Quests all start in the village and take you outside to any parts of the map. These are traditional bounty hunter, civilian displacement, etc quests. Once you've completed the quest you'll gain a quest item which must be returned to the quest giver in order to gain the trophy which gives you renown based on how difficult the quest was. Players can take one quest at a time and the same quest giver will give more difficult quests as each is completed. Multiple players can take the same quest and, if a quest giver is killed by someone on that quest, then the quest is failed and all players on that one have to come back and get new quests. Escort missions can be failed by the escorted character dying at creatures or other player's hands.
Kingmaker is the most powerful weapon in this mode, almost twice as powerful as anything sold in the village. It is held in a silver key chest randomly placed on the map. The chest will only show up when one player has all 25 silver keys needed to open the chest, at which point all players will be alerted that it has shown up and will be shown on the map where it is. Each player starts with 5 silver keys and 5 more are hidden around the map.
Death occurs by losing all your health obviously. You'll be returned straight to your house in the village when you die with no sitting out, but your body will stay where it fell. Returning to your body will give you the option to bury it. If another player finds an unburied body they will have the option to steal the highest powered trophy (transferring it's renown to them), currently carried quest item, all of their silver keys, or their most powerful weapon. This means players must watch their backs whenever other players are around, even if they've agreed to team up with each other for a little while.
The Crown is hidden behind a demon door (which doesn't have a portal when opened) that will only open for someone with the agreed amount of renown. Retrieving the crown and making it back to the village with it wins the game, but once a player has the crown in their possession they will be marked on the map for all other players and a message will go out that a coronation is due to begin.
I think that this sort of design could create some epic competitive multiplayer mayhem with players screwing each other over left right and centre as they struggle to get ahead. It provides tactical opportunities along with the regular Fable feel and action in a frantic race for the crown.

Morality in games?

Hi all,

My name is Jiten Karia and I'm currently doing a feature story on gaming morality.

I'd HUGELY appreciate an opinions and feedback based on the issue. Some of the questions I'm looking to get answered are:

Should the media/government really be crying out loud when a game has a provoking storyline element?
Do you think games affect a player's morals in the slightest?
Do games with 'moral choices' improve gameplay or are they a ploy to make you play the game again?

Any other opinions regarding morals in gaming would be happily included.

Thanks
OT is so dead, nobody has made an 'OT is dead' thread yet.

So here it is. Hands up all who are still alive.

Yep, it's that time again when Lionhead don't have a game on the immediate horizon and the buzz around Fable 2 has worn thin.

Although there is another explanation. We've thrown around the topics of abortion, gay rights, religion, amateur eugenics and the finer qualities of cheese so much we stopped scraping the bottom of the barrel years ago. Say it aint so.
Also, the lack of vBulletin is probably to blame. I miss being able to make polls.

Adventures Of Sparrow (REDO)

Chapter 1

"What was that? Oh! Yuck." Well I hear thats lucky. Like finding a four-leaf clover. All though I think I'd prefer the clover. Look little Sparrow... Castle Fairfax looks so nice in the snow. Imagine the grind dining hall. I bet Lord Lucien's having roast duck this time of year. But he must be really lonely since his wife and his little girl died. In that big castle, all by himself... If only we could live there." Rose said.

Sounds Of Claps and cheers in the distance.

"What is going on over there? Come with me little brother". Rose said.

The brother and sister wandered off.

"Hello there young Rose you look hungry. Have you reconsidered my offer?" asked Arfur.

"We'll never be that hungry. The answer is "no"!" replied Rose.

"You'll be back and i'll be waiting" said Arfur.

"What ever scum bag" yelled Rose.

The continued walking to the crowd when they then saw that it was just a trader.

"Well we should stick around there is nothing for us to do anywere else" said Rose.

"I suppose so" said Sparrow.

The trader went on for a few minutes selling junk to people. He then had only one thing left for sale it was a magical music box that could grant you a single wish.

"Rubish, there's no such thing as magic" said Rose.

"We live in grim times indeed if the young are to world weary to belive in magic, most children your age belive eagerley" said a hooded woman.

"Look I can see your eyes are bad lady but i'm telling you that music box is not magic" said Rose in a rude tone.

"Look Rose how can you be so sure it is not magic you do not know" said Sparrow.

"You should listen to your brother Rose" said the woman.

"Both of you are acting childish there is no such thing as magic and if you are willing to pay five gold coins on a simple music box go for it but I will not!" Exclamed Rose.

"You belive whatever you want to belive Rose" said the woman walking away.

"You are STUBORN" Yelled Sparrow.

"Fine Sparrow if you want it so bad then you get it but you see I am going back to the hut" Replied Rose.

The brother and sister walked there sepret ways. Sparrow walked down an alley and saw another boy beating on a dog.

"HEY JACKASS WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR DOING" Yelled Sparrow.

"Having a little fun whats it to ya" chuckled Rex.

Sparrow ran his fastest at Rex and charged his head into his rib cage. Rex fell from the impact and Sparrow was on top of him. Sparrow was punching rex in the face over and over agian. Rex then grabbed a stick and wacked Sparrow in the side of the head with it. Rex then started to kick Sparrow in the ribcage Sparrow tripped Rex and then he got up Sparrow took the stick and repeditly wacked Rex with it. Rex was lying face down on the ground and Sparrow stomped on the back of his head the crowd of kids heard bones crunching. Sparrow then jumped up and down on Rex's back. Rex rolled over and Sparrow saw his nose dissformed and blood all over his face. Sparrow then seeing what he did it made him go beserk and stomp on Rex's face over and over. The crowd cryed out things like "STOP YOUR GONNA KILL HIM" and "CRUSH HIS FACE" and all oter taunts and cheers. Rex was knocked unconcious and Sparrow put his foot on Rex's throat and pushed harder then ever and held it there for atleast thirty seconds. Blood then started gushing out of Rex's mouth. Sparrow then took the stick and Rex's hat he out the hat on and held up the stick. The crowd of kids cheered.

Little Sparrow.

I was inspired by ReaversSparrow. Here goes.

Chapter I. The Music Box.

Plop. I brushed the bird excretement out my hair, my older sister, Rose, giggled. I was only eleven, and she was fifteen.
"Eww... Yuck! I hear that's lucky though... Like findin' a four-leaf-clover... I think I'd prefer the cover though."
She turned and sighed towards Castle Fairfax.
"It looks so nice in the snow... I bet Lord Lucien's lonely... Ever since his wife and little girl died... If only-"
A cheer emanated from round the nearby corner.
"What is 'appening over there? Come on little brother!"

We walked round toward the source of the commotion, when the notorious criminal Arfur emerged from the shadows.
"Hello there young Rose! Have you reconsidered my offa'?!"
I got angry with this.
"Go away you creep!" I shouted, kicking up a nearby chicken into his face, he let out a cry, and ran away.
" 'Elp! 'Elp! Get this Chick'n off me!!!"
Rose laughed loudly.
" one Little Sparrow."
We walked the rest of the way to the town center.
"I hate 'im..." She muttered to herself.

We turned the corner to see a crowd round a trading stall.
"Just a trader Rosie..." I said dissapointed.
"Gather wound! For the sale of the centuwy!" I heard the trader shout.
"I am Mystical Murgo, and I have accumulated mystewious and wondewous objects! Which I now offer to you for the modest pwice of.... five gold!"
Me and Rose remained there, it was quite interesting.

"Now! A-ladies and A-gentlemen! You will be amazed by this fabulous-"
Murgo turned around, and heaved a big chest near to the steps.
"-Chest. It is said that only wun with the blood of a heerwo. Twuly amazing..."
"I'll 'ave that!" A young woman yelled, she hastily sped forward, placed the gold in Murgos hands, and lugged the chest off to a nearby house.
"Next we have a fabu-"
"Get on with it Murgo!" Someone yelled from within the crowd.
Murgo pretented to ignore the man, but finished what he was saying quickly.
"- This is a magical miwwor! For as long as you look into it, you will be, beautiful!"
A man stepped forward, and pulled out a small pouch of gold, and handed it to the trader. As the man began to walk away, Murgo said to him.
"It only works if you look into it in compwete darkness like."

"Now. This is surely the most magnificent fing I have on sale. A magical box, cweated by the Old Kingdom wulers, themselves. Take it somewhere quiet, turn the handle thwee times, and make one wish."
I tugged at Roses sleeve.

"No Sparrow. We don't have enough food, and I'm not going to spend five gold on some stupid box that won't even work."
A woman that had been there the whole time, turned around, below her hood, I could see white eyes, and grayish skin. I gasped and hid behind Rose.

"Most people your age believe eagerly in magic. We must be in grim times indeed, if the young think magic is a myth."
Rose looked up at her.
"Look Miss... I can see your eyes are bad, but I'm tellin' you, that music box is a load of rubbish."

The woman spoke up once more.
"Ah, that's what Murgo thinks. He has no idea what he has in his possession, but you have an inkling. Don't you? Some part of you wants to believe it is really magic."
"You... Really think it could be magic?" Rose said quietly, she suddenly shook her head.

"No it can't be. Even if I could get five gold, I'd use it to feed Sparrow and meself, not to be some tootsy music box."
The woman began to walk off.
"And if you didn't use that five gold on the music box, then you and your Little Sparrow would be no closer to the inside of that lovely castle."

Rose looked down at me, and then looked up to where the woman had been standing. She was gone.

"Well that was wierd... But... What if it is real... I bet someone around here would give us some gold to do... I dunno... To do summin'. Come on Little Sparrow, let's go get some gold."

The crowd had dispersed during our conversation with the strange lady, and we began to think what we could do to get five gold.
My game has glitched :(

I was playing with a friend last night, and I asked the bard to sing a song for me, he didn't and now the prompt for the bard to sing a song is stuck on the screen, if I hold down a to accept it does nothing.

I have tried to leave the area, and it will not let me as it reads *scene must end first* (or something like that) I cant even fast travel, or sleep, it wont let me do anything.

Please help, as I have been playing this save for ages, and have been helping people out with some of the harder achievements with it too.

countries

well as you should all know, albion is not the only kingdom in fable 3. what countries do you want to see? my favourites would be:

-Africa
-Japan
-France
-Russia

How do I post c++ code on these forums so it's highlighted and not mangled with escapes?

I tried using the but that didn't seem to do anything.

Please help.

OT - The Darker And Edgier sequel to the hugely successful Off-Topic

I hate the description of "Darker and Edgier". I really, really loathe it. As far as I can tell, all it seems to mean is that at some point characters will have extra-marital sex in dimly lit rooms.

I have recently been forcing myself to watch "Stargate Universe" the latest installment of the Stargate franchise. The Stargate series is usually very more of a semi-serious adventure series involving romps and fracases, but Stargate Universe has billed itself "Darker and Edgier". To this end its essentially attempted to copy the recent Battlestar Galactica series as much as possible and whilst this has led to the majority of the characters mumbling in a miserable fashion or, alternatively, shouting there is a distinct lack of anyone actually having anything worthwhile to say. Admittedly, a great many characters in Galactica had very little to say other than "I'm going to shoot myself in the face any day now", but people generally then handed them guns and looked on exepectantly, or the Cylons arrived and executed a cull of the excess.

However, in Universe everyone generally seems to believe that misery must be met with retaliation through backstory. The results of this is that a typical conversation proceeds along the lines of,

"Oh no, we shall all starve"
"I'm used to it. I never learned how to cook despite attending a culinary school for ten years."
"My mother went to culinary school before becomine a nurse. Now she has HIV. She's going to die."
"My wife is dead!"
"I'm so sorry. I can't understand your pain. My wife and I are merely estranged after the pressure I placed upon my son resulted in his suicide."
"That must be a terrible guilt to bear. I only have to bear the guilt of being responsible for the death of my entire nation after I took a holiday from my work in the nuclear power plant."

Not to mention each espiode consists of one discrete problem that one might encounter when stranded. No two problems ever overlap. Each problem is rigidly confined to it's own episode. Then each problem grows in magnitude and the cast panics before the highly intelligent computer fixes it in the last ten minutes. Then the resident scientist, played by Robery Carlyle, acts shifty and everyone asks,
"Can we trust you?"
"Ha," he disdainfully shrugs, emphasising how morally ambigious he is through the medium of his rotating shoulders. At this everyone will whisper about the various qualities that make him untrustworthy and then someone will directly say he is untrustworthy. Then they will all eat lunch.

Then the token religious army guy will go off and have dimly lit sex with the woman who only devotion is to 18th century gender roles and regular crying. Fortunately he's Roman Catholic (probably because having a giant crucifix manifest itself in the desert is the only way to inform viewers he's Christian without it being too subtle and easily missed, you know, like your standard cross might be) and thus sex is something he's allowed to have all the time! There's even a Latin word for it!

On the plus side, the recurring villains are pirates.

Since they don't care about how people see them, they can just go on rampages and get XP from the guards to boot while having fun. As a guy, I found myself going into Greatwood to fight bandits, which took not two minutes, and in F2 I just did the Crucible until the Colloseum came out in STF, because slave rescues were too infrequent.

I imagine the situation to be the same in F3, whereas the guys can murder their populaces, except now there will be consequences, such as revolts and that no one in their right minds would live in your country. What could be done for the guys besides an arena, or besides strolling through the same areas over and over again?

One idea I have is that you could possibly go on various crusades as a sort of rampage for , but still, there is only so much land to capture, and having to re-capture your land after you let it be captured so that you could crusade again is just stupid.

Any ideas, anybody?

What are you playing?

I was wondering what games are you playing right now? That annoys me. If you want a better magic system then suggest something, but don't just suggest moving backwards to something that almost every game has. Personally I'm a fan of the Fable II magic system but do believe that it could be improved, so here's some of my suggestions to improve the system and make mages feel more mystical. These suggestions are built around the basic idea that a pure mage will be more powerful in different ways than someone who just knows a few spells to use along with swordplay and guns, and assume the current spell casting system is in place.
Mage Staff - The mage staff is a two-handed weapon that can be equipped instead of the sword and gun, replacing basic functionality of both. While the staff will be weak physically (with a Master level staff doing the same damage as an Iron sword) and have no augment slots, it's primary function is for spell-casting. As such the staff will have a single spell assigned to it that can be cast at level 1 without the character knowing it, and which will add one level to the character's knowledge of that spell. Tapping X will unleash a melee attack while tapping Y will shoot the missile version of the staff's assigned spell. The staff will also speed up spell charging, with the speed bonus being assigned depending on the star quality of the staff. All damage done by the staff counts as magic experience.
Mystic Styles - This set of abilities relates to the mage staff and is only available with one equipped. They are bought with magic experience and allow a pure mage character more power in the world. Block is the level 1 ability and allows the mage character to cast a limited physical shield against melee attacks by holding X. Focus is second level ability that allows the mage to change the assigned spell of the staff to any spell he has learned. If he has learned a spell up to level three then he also gains an enchantment bonus for that spell (see Schools Of Magic below). Targeting is the third level ability and allows the mage to freely aim the staff's spell by holding Y, replacing gun functionality for targeting specific enemies or taking down gargoyles, etc. This also provides subtargeting for disarming enemies by holding LT while aimed at an enemy. Spell Fury - The fourth level ability is the ultimate attack and allows the mage to charge a spell up to level 5 and cast all the spell levels below it all at once. Want to see someone hit by Chaos so they applaud the fact that you're electrocuting them while they're on fire and have the whole thing in slow motion? You need a spell fury.
Schools Of Magic - Rather than having each spell only having a missile and area effect I believe that further levels should give more abilities. Enchantment is activated when the mage has learned a spell all the way to level three. This allows him to use the Focus mystic style to not only change the spell that his mage staff uses but add a special effect to it in the same way that an augment is added. The special effect depends on the spell he has learned with Inferno giving him the Flame ability, Shock giving Killerwatt, Raise Dead giving Ghoul, etc. Stone Cutting Once a spell is learned up to level four the character has a great mastery over it and may imbue it's power into a gemstone, turning that stone into an augment and raising it's value whether the augment is for personal use or just for sale. The process takes a week of time and each spell will require a different gem to be imbued into. Power Leakage If a spell is taken all the way to level 5 and equipped as the level 5 spell to cast then the mage can barely contain the power of the spell, resulting in character morphs based on the equipped spell. A Raise Dead specialist may constantly have a single ghostly Hobbe with him, while a Shock master may have lightning coursing over his body that stuns his opponents when they hit him.
These suggestions are intended to allow mage characters to be more self reliant without relying on melee and missile weapons and to make them play differently to other characters while retaining the mana-less magic system of Fable II but adding some mysticism back to them. If anyone has some different ideas or refinements to these I'd love to read them.

Racial demographic in Fable III (and cats).

I totally get that Albion is a historical magical Britain, but, as an idea, could Fable III maybe reflect today’s racial demographic? After all, in the current Fables I can be or (of course), I can be a man or a woman, I can be straight or gay, I can even be slim or fat – all of which is great - but I can’t be any colour other than white. Why not? I think it would be cool if there was a bit more diversity amongst the citizens of Albion, especially in the bigger cities like, Bowerstone – and there are some great characters from literature to draw inspiration from - Rallick Nom, Kalam, and Quick Ben from Steven Erickson’s Malazan Book of the Fallen series – for example .

If Fall Out 3 can do it so can Fable!

(and i want a cat – but I’ll take that to the `reinventing the dog’ thread)

Looking forward to being the first gay, black, cat owning, King, or Queen, of Albion.

Anyone else think so?
