    3D graphics mon!

Hey all you 3D graphics people, post your pics here! Lets all share and learn from eachother Happy [:)] (hopefully it's not just me and merrow either!) Here's a link to an online gallery with a few pics. most of these have been posted in other threads though. http://www.eburin.com/media/media.html here's something new. I've been working on it here and there but it hasn't turned out how I wanted so I might scrap it (it looked very cool in pencil)

Most people use 3D studio max. it's amazing. other people use Maya or lightwave. I'm fond of them all, but I use lightwave most freqently. You're probably best to learn 3D studio though, if you have the means. It is probably the most widely used program for modeling, and animation.

Trust me on this, Milkshape is a godsend... There is no doubt about it. It was the first program i used, and after some work i created my own techniques with it and really get used to working with base vertex's and skeletal animations. I mean its such a nice cheap program that allows so much control with all teh right tools. 3d studio max i found to be very hard and confusing. Mostly i just got lost in teh program. however i am sure that if you are rich enough to burn money it could be better with the right teaching and knowledge.

The_Guy can we see some of the stuff you have done in Milkshape? I was just at the Milkshape homepage and the program looks amazing for $20. Milksape may be easier for making game models given that it is designed for that specific task but you can't really compare it to 3D Studio Max which does so much more.

    Learning 3D

For those interested in getting some experience in 3D modelling with an eye towards entering the games industry 'gmax' is a good starting point. gmax link It's essentially a cut down version of 3dsmax 4 aimed at encouraging people to create their own levels, skins etc... for games.

sadly i have lost all my picture of my works and the mods that i sent them to have sense been closed, but i did do some of the animations for the DMZ mod for halflife (really fun mod, but needs work with the netcode bad lag) but the models were done by there lead modeller evilchimp was his nickname, great guy very good at modelling characters... gmax sounds like a cool program i'll have to check it out. btw the BBB team uses 3d studio 4, or 3? for the character animations or is somthing else used?

I checked out Gmax and it seems at first glance a robust modeling and animating program. Ian said that it is “a cut down version of 3dsmax 4” which means you can’t output quality 3dmax renderings (I guess that's why its freeWink [;)]). The only rendering you can get directly from the program is to capture the perspective view of the model you are working on. However if you want to make levels for a game which supports Gmax this seems to be the way to go. I found some good generic 3D tutorials on the web. I suggest you start with this one on Lighting strategies in 3D.

Wasn't GMAX made for modifications to games? I remember using a product called GMAX that let you create mods for games...
  •  05-14-2002, 21:23 14656 in reply to 14032

Right you are. It shipped with Flight Simulator 2002, Dungeon Siege, and Command & Conquer: Renegade. You just take the basic program and add some export filters called a gamepak to create content for a certain game. You can make static and animated models and I guess that each gamepak would offer some scripting options to make the models interactive when in the game.

Basically the program can be used to mod for a variety of games. For example to export your levels into Dungeon Siege you need the Dungeon Siege gamepak. Just follow Ian's link to the Gmax website for the info. Also I wanted to post a model of a temple I started tonight. Later I will include some kind of raised platform and put my model of the PEGO sword on it. Here is what I have of the temple so far... suggestions are welcome.
