    Re: JazzX Reviews - Open

thanks for the honest review JazzX, but I have one issue. You accused me of using uncredited music in my film, but every single track I used was in the game, nothing came from outside. The piano track you refer to in the review I think must've been Advancing Army (Silent & Clean). I can list the entire soundtrack if you like, or you can refer a scene to me so I can double check. I made sure to use only in-game music for all of my movies so far.

Other then that, thanks for the honest review of Ramsey.

That's one I've never heard before - no wonder. It's so badly played that I can't believe they put that in the game!

Anyway - I got that wrong. 1000 VC has been credited to your account for the missing star. Sorry about that.

    Hi JazzX,

Glad to see you are up and running again.

I don't think you've seen this, and I was curious as to what you thought of the song (and the video).

"Some Of Us" (by Ally Miller)

    http://movies.lionhead.com/movie/128790

My one and only music video, which I had to employ a similar shaving technique to yours to make work.  And that is the reaosn it will probably remain the one and only music video from my studio!  lol

The song is used with permission from Ally Miller himself, who unfortunately has given up his music career (or had at the time I contacted him.)  A pity, as I think he was really G o o d [Good].

    Cheers!

    BiggsTrek.

    Please review

Firstly, i have no idea why my thumbnail did not appear. I have never had trouble with them before. Go figure

Welcome to HATED - a short monologue by me (Sparky) with music composed by Norrie

This is a somewhat different release for me - its quite serious for starters. Hated is a socially focused piece delivered by the all so eloquent 'Skid' who, as you will see, has his own views on the subject.

Changes at School 4: How Many More of These Are You Going to Endure?

    Genre: Teen Drama

    Duration: 11 minutes

BBFC rating: U - suitable for all

    **** stars

The last couple of lines were great - sage words. They were wicked! (hehehehe - but "cool"'s OK, and that's been in use since at least 1950 daddio!)

Let's get the negatives out of the way first - VO audio levels weren't always above the music. It's also not a G o o d [Good] idea to use music with lyrics in dialogue scenes - but in the bar that was unavoidable, best to take it right down. You'll see that in a lot of real-life films - the scene is set in a bar with pumping music, but as soon as characters engage in conversation the music is taken right down (sometimes too far, but that's better than not far enough).

Acting for the female characters was a bit samey - quite often it was difficult to tell which female was talking in the group shots. The tone of voice used seemed exactly the same for all three.

    But now the G o o d [Good] stuff:

The acting - lol. I've just complained about the girls, but the boys were great. The main character and the nerd were excellent (as I said, the last line was delivered beautifully).

The story - well there really wasn't much of one. It reminded me a tiny bit of George Lucas's "American Graffiti" - which is basically just hanging out with assorted teens, but brilliant because of that simplicity. Sitting in a bar for nearly 11 minutes seems like a recipe for TMO boredom. But the situations and characters were very engaging and the time just flew by.

And now an aside - brought on by the "Virgin Daiquiri" order in the film (bleeurchh! That's like orange juice without the orange):

American kids have it rotten when it comes to booze. They have to be 21, whereas we brits have to be 18.

I remember we used to go to this dodgy suburban pub from when we were 16 and still get served alcohol - then 2 years later, it was our friend's 18th birthday and we went to the same place to celebrate - but they must've known they were serving underage for the past 2 years anyway!

Nowadays, you have to look over 21 or you automatically get asked for ID in most places to prove you're over 18. There's no fun anymore! The only alternative is to get an older brother to buy some JD from the offies/supermarket and then drink it in the streets - I think it would be better kept in the pubs under the supervision of a Landlord. We were quite well behaved on our visits to the pub, no more than 3 pints at a time, that's why they weren't too concerned about our age and happy to take our money (most of it came from school kids I reckon!); although they seriously considered not serving me once because somebody in my group wanted lager and another wanted cider - mix the two together and you get "snakebite" which apparently turns teen drinkers psychotic!

Ah - changes! Some changes are for the better - but when it comes to teens and booze, I reckon they would be better off under adult supervision in a pub rather than a blanket prohibition which just causes them to go onto the streets and be REALLY stupid.

    - there you are - aside over!

The final message of this film, that the old rules no longer apply, is probably true. I think that's largely thanks to the internet. Two people who are interested in, say, Star Wars can meet and chat about that in depth on a Star Wars fansite. The fact that one of them is a cheerleader and the other a nerd means nothing (due to the anonimity) - and if they decide to meet each other for real, it's because they've discovered something they really enjoy about each other. The cheerleader is no longer going to go "but you're such a nerd!" when she finally meets the guy. Maybe, people are no longer so shallow as a result. I hope it's true.

Anyway - enjoyed the film, I've let a possible music violation slide (if "Mort's i-pod" hadn't been mentioned I would have been none the wiser) - but ALL musicians should be thanked in the credits in future.

I shall now watch the only one of these I haven't seen yet - number 3 ...

Changes at School 3: Why am I Still Making These? was duly watched and scored * star for non-crediting of musicians.

Lol - "The thrill of seeing your cards hit on the river". No wonder he keeps losing!

The acting here was excellent, some of the best I've heard on TMO for a domestic drama.

The issue of addiction and the harsh price of getting your kicks from cards was well handled. He explained those kicks very well. I particularly liked some of the reaction shots, it's not easy to get the right emotions out of the facial animations, but that was done well here.

I've let a possible music violation slide - I wouldn't have known if it wasn't mentioned. But I thoroughly advise that all filmmakers are careful to note down whose music they're using during production and credit them on release.

    Anyway - a very G o o d [Good] short film with superb performances.

Thanks a alot Jazz Smily [:)]  I know I was stupid for not crediting musicians.  I have fixed the situation and credited the musicians for the 3rd one in the description.  The reason, I put Morts Eyepod on the descriptions instead of the artists themselves was because, I downloaded the music a while back, and lost the thread that told the artists when the forums switched so all I know was that I got the music off of Morts Eyepod, I figured out a couple of them but some of the others I couldn't remember.  Glad you liked Changes at School 4, I'm planning to have one more movie to totally finish the series, probably coming near Christmas time.  Thanks again Jazz Big Smile [:D] Up []

    ***** stars

Fantastic eye candy - the very thing a sci-fi fan likes. But enough about the "naughty" Corporal Amanda Harrison (haha - gets them every time) .. the mods in this film were also superb; the spaceships, sets, overlays, costumes, the works.

G o o d [Good] performances - especially in the battle scene by the squad under fire.

The film wasn't without its glitches - a crucial line went missing in the middle, I think it was meant to explain what the plan was going to be. A minor synchronisation problem later on (VO and lip synch) and I noticed two goofs in the transporter room:
"I'm beaming up the first four now"
    - he beams up three people -
"that's four up, locking onto four more"
    - he beams up five people!

That might seem trivial, but it would have changed the ending if he'd continued beaming people up in groups of five instead of four.

Still - there was much great spectacle here that outshone the mistakes, and a love story that helped setup the ending for maximum impact.

lol - I wish this director would sort out his titles, it says a different title in the film to the one posted in this thread. And who's "Belinda Tomlin"? She wasn't in the film but was mentioned in the opening credits.

I'm going to have my work cut out when this film is featured in the JazzX Movie Vault thread in a year's time!

Hello, Jazzx. Earlier tonight I was listening to you play trumpet on DeliriousStudios' "Distance" film and that reminded me about this here thread.

I'd be much obliged if you'd take a gander at my music video, Kono Michi: Dark Eyes, when you're next reviewing.

There are technical flaws due to The Movies for Mac exporting audio / visuals out of synch and juddering but I'm pretty pleased with it, nonetheless.

    Re: JazzX Reviews - Open

I suppose I shall post mine as well then?

Do you like action scifi? Do you like Star Trek, Enterprise, Stargate, Firefly, do you like characters like Han Solo? Do you like deep space exploration, and epic battles? If so, you should check out the teaser for my possibly upcoming series about a ragtag crew of outcasts who scour the universe for riches and glory, while all the while helping those in need, making new friends, and deadly foes. Check it out, and leave some comments and idea suggestions.

Below is just a picture of some of the characters.

Please realize this is a trailer, and please read the description. Link is provided below.

    Cheers!

    Duration: 4.5 minutes

BBFC rating: /PG\ - for mild bad language and violence

    ***** stars

G o o d [Good] song and an entertaining visual story to go along with it - I liked the teleport effect and I was fooled by the "letting-hair-down" special effect, very G o o d [Good].
Funny opening in the bar as well.

    A very G o o d [Good] music video.
