The Official "Improvements for Fable 2" Thread

Title says it all. I swore to myself long ago that I'd make this topic upon the game's release, so here it is. Include everything you realistically want to see in the sequel, as well as anything that you think should be cut from it. I'll start us off... More Bosses: I think the challenge in this area should be heightened a little, and maybe throw in a couple rogues whilst you battle the bosses, to make it harder to just focus on one person. More Difficulty: It seems that all I really have to do to get far in this game is stand back, throw some lightning on the enemies, watch my multiplier and xp grow exponentially and use one of my 125 will potions when I'm depleted. I'm not quite sure what can be done to ramp up the challenge, but I'm sure you guys can figure something out. More Faces: I've noticed that there are 66 people who love me, 50-some of which are female. Now, I think that's pretty cool, but I can't tell one from another ANYWHERE. I think that if I married one of them, the only way I could tell her apart from the other ladies would be to look for the 'wife' icon on the minimap. Maybe the faces are all different and my TV's just too small... but you know how that goes. Wink [;)] Less Loading: I know that it would have been immensely hard to get the world to be seamless, like you all first wanted, and it would have been really wierd to walk out of an area you just cleared, and then turn around and find all the enemies back again, but at least try to get them way shorter than they are. I'm sure that Fable 2 would probably be in development for the Xbox Next, so the issue shouldn't be too challenging for next-gen systems. More Strength and Skill Attributes: It's really easy to just become a Will-User, because there's so much variety in what you can do. Strength and Skill only have 3 attributes apiece, and although they each have 7 levels to them, it doesn't seem like they play enough of a role in the game. There should be certain feats you can perform under each category, like the Will system. Throw Enemies, Counter-Attack, and Disarm could be extra Strength feats, and Multi-Arrow, Eagle Sight, and Climbing could be Skill feats. Not a magical Multi-Arrow, but a system where the Skilled character could manually fire 2 or 3 arrows. More Game Altogether: I've heard a lot of things about the game being as short as it is, and I'd just like to keep the fresh Fable experience going. If this game were as long as KotOR, which was roughly 35-45 hours, I'm sure it would be loved even more than it is now. That's all I've got for this round. Try to keep the improvements positive-sounding... I'd hate for this topic to just become a place where people gripe about missing features.

I agree, they need to extend the length of the game, and also need to add xbox live Happy [:)] But the overall game was great,

Here are my ideas: |Bigger areas| I don't mind fences, but I do mind the small paths I'm forced to walk. |Less streamlined| I hate that I take nearly all the quests of any importance from the hero's guild. It discourages exploration. It's way too accessible in that regard. The game feels like less of an adventure and more of a Grand Theft Auto. |Better boyhood| I didn't like how short my boyhood was. That bothered me. I would have liked to ideally have stayed a boy for like three hours or so. |Better transition between young kid and adult| That cutscene was jarring. I would have prefered this following idea: You do something important every day, and when you go to bed and wake up the next morning, you have aged approximately two years. So say you train in the sword when you are 11, the next day you wake up when you are a teenager and train in the will. Then the next day you are a much older teen and you train in archery. |No formal training| Morrowind had a lot of **** I hated, but I sure did like the feeling of being tossed out on my ass in the very begginning. Fable is a little too nice, in my opinion. There is just too much guidance for my tastes. |Trees| Let me climb them and snipe from a branch with my crossbow! But to balance it out, have the branch break after a little while, and have the people I'm sniping either be able to block some of the arrows, or snipe back with a projectile of thier own (throwing rocks, shooting back ect.) |Expressions and conversation| Make the expressions lead into a conversation. Expand them so that you can converse in a mean or flirty or indignant or apologetic or amused ect., way, instead of just repeating the same expression over and over again. Also, give the main character lines, but let the player controll how he wants to say them, so that the roleplaying aspect stays in tact. |Fighting| I like it, but I wish blocking and rolling was implemented a little bit more smoothely. I rocked at ninja gaiden, and could block perfectly in that game (and needed to), but in Fable it's a little bit akward going from blocking back to striking. My friend feels the same way about it. That's it for now. If I think of anything else I'll post it. I like this thread. Very constructive. I hope Gradius or Sam reads it.

Can we please hold of on this. A Fable 2 if there even is one probably wouldn't even be announced for another couple years and probably wouldn't come out for Xbox. Why can't we just be happy with Fable and concentrate on that for a while...
  •  09-17-2004, 4:32 238926 in reply to 238900

UPDATE: |NPC's| Should feel a little more real. I'd like more of them to have decent backstorys (take a note from KOTOR or Morrowind). |Boasts| Should earn you SPECIAL ITEMS instead of gold!! I don't do them because I have enough gold. But special items... Now that is something I'd accept a boast for. |Phials| Less ressurection phials please! These items should be something you save for a major boss! I don't like that I can use them carelessly. |Saving| A simple "Save Anywhere Anytime" system would be nice. |Quests| Should be less formal. I hate that "Accept a Quest" screen and that "You've just completed a Quest" screen. The quests should be integrated more deeply into the game. For instance: Lets say I explore the Hobbe cave before I take the little lost grandson quest, I should be able to find him there anyway, and HE should tell me that his grandmother is looking for him and to bring him back. I shouldn't have to exclusively talk to the granny first. |Teleporting| No thank you. I do it anyway because it's just easy to, but I wish the game was designed without it. |Puzzles| This game is thirsty for them! I'm not talking "optional puzzles" like the doors, I'm talking puzzles that you NEED to complete in order to progress with what you're doing. |Quests (revisited)| I don't like how obvious it is that I'm either doing the MAIN quest or an OPTIONAL quest. Those symbols constantly remind me when I'm doing and optional quest, that that is all it is... optional. No other RPG has ever made me feel that what I was doing was unimportant, no matter how optional it might be. |Jobs| This isn't a big deal, but I would have liked the option of getting a job in town. It would be cool to be a street vender and have to convince people to buy items. That would be a fun little thing. |Towns| In general they feel too much like hubs. Again this is something that taking out having all your quests at the hero's guild would remedy. Wow. I can't believe all the stuff that's being dumped out of my head and onto my keyboard.

Free roaming....simple. Sad to say but Im pretty disapointed with how fast Im getting through the game.People are already looking forward to fable (what they thought it would be...) I would have waited 3 more years for release just as long as it had free roaming. I guess it was "too much work". for them! Back on subject.....more baddies, more gameplay. (its seems what we got stuck with is 1/2 what we originally hoped for. People dont act like you truly love the game .(I try....but in my mind I know Im disapointed).Call me a hater or whatever. More variety on what your kid looks like. (hero as a kid). Evry hero thats all bad will look the same, pale, horns, red eyes....same with good heroes.

People dont act like you truly love the game
I've been on these boards (different name) for three years. Trust me, the people who act all dissapointed were expecting things from this game that I wouldn't expect from God if he was making it. It's best to ignore that. About people not acting like they love the game, most of us do. This thread doesn't invite us to post what we love about it. I could post as many complaints about my other favorite games.

Their taking the game in the opposite direction that they stated a long time ago. So its going to be hard to mention things that are going to be taken seriously. But I''l state how I want it to go. SIM with lite story elements. Make the bad guy immortal this time around. The story can pretty much stay the same as long as you are REQUIRED to have a kid. Otherwise the game ends with you dying. If you have a kid you take over when you die and he becomes an adult. continuing the story. Get around the kids being born outside the main town by having the wife WANT to move to the main town because of the location of the school. From there you can have random events try and pull the character in. But otherwise leave him to his devices. And finally the basic stuff. More types of enemies and quests. I also want to be able to quest just by overhearing a conversation between two villagers. Or basically completing a quest without being asked to complete it.
    Apathy Cannot Inspire.
    Ambivalence cannot lead.
    Loved me. Feared me.
    Changed me. Killed me.
    Anything would be something.
But nothing is worst of all.

About the free roaming, why not have a fre roaming "Mode" wich you may choose from the main menu, that would be something wouldnt it? and dual swords would be fun

The few key things I would change are 1.)I think they should just scrap aging and focus on other cosmetic changes for the main hero. With none of the other characters or the world aging you character feels like an anomaly. It also seems to disrupt the flow of the storyline as being an old man wouldn’t necessarily fit the role assigned to you. Not to mention I haven’t seen many people who want to age. I don’t think any age should be given; leave it up to player in the future. In regards to magic… I thought Gandalf and such were old because they lived for thousands of years not because they used magic alone. Magic should have an effect on your appearance, but I don’t think it should be aging. 2.)For each town I would focus much more on creating a low number of unique inhabitants for each locale (ala Zelda). Allow us to interact with them in more meaningful ways. If that means taking away the ability to slaughter them, the exchange seems worth it. Being married should be more interesting or at least unique and perhaps story related. This goes for other heroes as well. Allow us to interact with them, even if we can’t compete. 3.)Who in their right mind would become a trader? Every time I enter an area they are being attacked. If Albion is so dangerous, play it up more. Allow for caravans with guards. Or at least make it seem more reasonable for someone to choose being a trader as a profession. 4.)No predefined background for the hero. The storyline came across as rather odd at times, as it seemed to attempt to tell a very specific tale for an undefined character. Either go one way or the other.

    ---===***MAJOR SPOILERS***===---

[Ultimate Freedom] I like the gigantic amount of freedom in the game, but i would like it if You could go anywhere you want, instead of a bunch of trees at the edge of an area blocking you from going any further. [Wider Range of weapons] There is a large amount of weapons, but I would like it even beter if they were more, and not just an upgrade of the other, different kinds of swords and axes and ranged weapons. Like if a special axe is ultimately powerful, but you cannot block hits and it costs a minimal amount of life to weild. while a light sword will be able to block and have the user be able to throw it and bring it back. (maybe witha spell that heavy weapons aren't compatible with) [Swimming] I would like there to be swimming, so instead of fishing for items just dive in and dive underwater for a short time and pick up the objest or try to catch a fish with your hands. [More Cloths] Possibly other dress cloths than villager suits and dresses. [More hairstyles and facial hair styles.] I like the ones in the game, but I sometimes get tired and want some other formal hairstyles other than Normal Haircut, etc. [More optional quests] Just some moe extra quests to boast on and get money, which leads to the next one... [re-entry arena] i don't know if you can re-enter the arena once you've beaten it, but if you can't then Fable 2 should have an arena where you can go in and battle for lots of $$$ over and over again, making up to 50 levels or a hundred which leads to my other one... [Difficulty Setting in options] You know, easy, normal, and hard will change the difficulty of the game, like normal setting will have the aqrena have only 50 stages max, while a hard setting will have 100 hard-core enemies (with no allies either) [Online Multi-player and online co-op] need I say more? [Having a child wih your wife] little rascal will maybe give you 10 gold peices he found on the floor, or 50 gold peices he robbed from someone (he looks up to you and your alignment/behaviour. [Longer story line] the posts above this one that other people have said have exellent reasons... [More npc range] More different faces, cloths, better npc A.I. personality, ect. [Enhancing foods] Special foods that not only enhance your alignment but can give you a large boost in physique, so you can do more damage with that weapon or other attributes like will and skill, the more powerul the boost, the more it will cost and less it will last. perhaps some anti-blavarine potions... [Becoming a balvarine] if you get bit by a balvarine every full-moon you character is exposed to will be transformed into a balvraine, you will be stronger and faster, and killing won't be a bad deed because you lost control over yourself; you can't help but feed your thirst for blood. so if you want to avoid this, read the Fable 2 manual for when there is a full moon or not... [Calendar] basic calendar that will tell you the day of the week and time in the game (real life time too) Month and when there will be a full-moon, so you can prepare for it if you were bit by a balvarine. [more time for Aging] Aging was too fast for me. In fable 2, The character should age less quickly. And there should be a window that notifies you when your character aged and beards should grow naturally (So if you reach 65, and you never shaved or got a haircut, look in the mirror and say hello to Gandalf) and if youuse a greatsword and use it to bash rocks, your character should grow muscles naturally (Instead of having to highten your health attribute) [Sheilds] Who dosen't want a gigantic sheild to block those annoying rocks the trolls throw at you. Sheilds should come at a variety just like the weapon, different sheild type like a light sheild for not-so-strong will users of archers, and heavy sheilds for Buff characters. Sheilds of course should heighten your armor rating. [alignment looks] I like how your character looks like an Angel when he is all-the-way good, but when i was turning good, my hair and facial hair was turning greay and white. i was at age 28 with a regualr beard and I looked like I was 75 years old, so your heair should grow grey or white in the late 40's through the 60's. because a 28 year old good character dsoen't look very young with a goatee thats pure-white. Evil [Evil] characters should have their hair stay black for a longer period of time than good characters, and evil characters only have dark grey hair when they get old. So when 65 good characters have their hair white as snow, while old evil characters will have it dark grey like those of rats. [Hair color] Since barbers back then didn't have hair dye, the nearest bucket of paint will do! a green afro with an orange goatee, go right ahed! (When in time, your hair will start falling, and you should see your normal hair grow back once all your painted hairs have fallen out, so your hair returnes to naturals if you leave it alone a long time, or shave it and grow it back entirely. [More hero NPC's] Maze is the only hero npc that gets attention like you form villagers, other hero npc's you should meet at child hood, and if you help them, they will be nice to you in the future, and if you are meant to them they will kick ur a$$ in darkwood. and once your grown up, npc character you should see just randomly wander around, maybe go in the barbershop and get a different haircut. maybe you see one of them killing balvarines in dark wood. Maybe on become your best frend and you can invite him to the arena to help you beat the enemies there. (Also evil-npc heroes can randomly ambush you when your not on a quest and just ambush you if your just wandering around in the wild if your a good hero, while its the opposite for good heroes.) [Longer Childhood] nad more freedom as a childtoo, wander into darkwood as a child, then get chased by balvarines and lead them to your home so that the gueards can kill them or see the balvarines kill villagers (When ur a child, your parents should be immortal, or invincible, but weak) so while you are safe at home, mom and dad will be punching that balvarine to peices. so that the village isn't completely empty... [Enemies have batter A.I. ] they should be smarter according to difficulty setting and you should be able to lead them down to a village for help, so that guards will kill it, leaving you to breathe safley. [More boss monsters] dragons would do nicely in a game like Fable, especially since its meidieval times. [Trophies hsould have more uses] A Kraken tooth trophy might be able to act as a peircing augmentation to a weapon, and maybe a dragon tooth will have fire augmntation. [Ships and oceans] Build a shipr and bring along some of your npc hero friends or go online and dsail with yout friends and battle random semi-boss monsters. 9Like a giant white whale will attack the ship at random times or a Kraken will appraoch. You can either skip the sail scene, or choose to watch it, if you watch it, you get to wlak around the ship and explore for a little while and fish.while if you skip it, you go form one town and set sail in the other on the blink of an eye. (If you don't encounter any unwelcome visitors of course...then a cut-scene will open showing the Kraken or other monster attacking. Thats all for now that I can think of...

The MOST IMPORTANT thing that Fable II should have is Dialogue Tree Conversations. like I said in another thread, the npcs do a very good job at making the hero feel important but a really horrible job at making themselves seem like they have any importance. They have personality but no depth and not much uniqueness. They don't even have names. I want to be able to get to know the people of albion but theres nothing there to know. They are like extras in a movie. I would prefer if there was just like five characters you could marry and make those relationships more indepth and unique. Being able to marry anyone isn't very rewarding when they are all the same. Online Arena fights! and pretty much everything other people have said.

I hope BBB takes these suggestions to heart when making Fable 2. Anyway heres mine...(contains spoilers) I did get a little pissed at the fact that the npcs were all clones not just in looks wise but like heysoos said no depth. I just couldn't care about them at all. Why put so much focus on the way people view you if the people themselves are all the same. I felt like the same people were telling me the same things. The only character in the game that had real back story was yours???? This is not cool considering this was a little thing that would have helped Fable to be better. For crying out loud we didn't even get to find out who Jack of blades was. I loved the game but you guys have to get more orginal with the story. The story in Fable has been done to death. If you try really interesting things story wise people will breath a sigh of releif because there geting something new. I won't just talk either heres a few examples. Jack should have been Maze. The sword should have been under a spell that the heros anicent family made to protect it from evil and only a great hero from there blood line could open the spell around the sword. This would have gave Jack/Maze a motive for saving him and turning him into the choosen one that would get the sword for him. Your sister should have been a EVIL bandit since she was raised by them. if you killed the bandit leader she would have been trying to kill you through the game. The choice at the end was not compelling to me so Jack should have killed your sister too in the end. You could have even played family memebers against each other. Your mother could have been trying to get you to be good and your sister trying to get you to become bad. The choice between them would have been more interesting. How about making the character choose his own life or the world. Pick your life and it ends with everyone dying and your the only one alive walking through flames and dead bodies all around. Choose self sacrfice and you see the people all worshiping statues of you , flowers at your grave, children hearing stories of you and it could end with you walking in a beautiful meadow towards your family in the distance.

Gladiator! Loved that movie. I'm still rooting for the immortal bad guy, and being able to play as your child. I mean its not like the bloodline couldn't continue indefinately. Have the bad guy kill off your family every once in awhile both your mother (if playing as your child after your own death), or the wife and kids. (ala Gladiator) Just something to goad you into following the story.

This is actually my wish list for a fable expansion (one that wouldn't take too long to complete, 3-6 months) anyway: PETS: some can be ridden some can't, like tigers and dragons, and horses. You have to find them though, and white tigers and golden dragons and stuff will me rare. Carry on your character from Fable to Fable 1.5, 2, watever. Try to make the game more smooth to play, i mean have a major load at the beginning then no more frequent loads, ok. That's it for now.

How's about making what Fable was supposed to be? Oh, and finding a publisher that doesn't rush you to get the game completed so that their console won't die out due to it's lack of decent titles. And for PC, damn it. You don't want to be restricted by "processing power". And let's say you take as long as is necessary, no matter how much the lifeless rejects - whose lives depend on playing Fable 2 - might nag.

1.) A random mission generator for after you beat the game. 2.) Quests do not make you start over, you either fail or succeed. (Take a good quest and betray them if your evil). 3.) More places to hang trophies in houses. 4.) Larger maps allowing free roaming. 5.) More creature types. 6.) More armor and clothing choices... there are no legandary armors. 7.) The ability to sell legandary items or display them. 8.) The arena would have allowed gambling and continued participation after the game was beat. 9.) The arena would have a boasting system like the quests had. 10.) Rent goes diretly to your gold amount. (Assume your renters mailed promisary notes to your main residence.) 11.) Better story, with a few twists. I could think of more but I want some breakfast..... =P and Zeroth..... Xbox is nopt dying out. It outsells other consoles now. The biggest games are not RPGs, they are sports games. Now that Xbox has EA games live-capable it will really take off.

All I want is a more accessible world and a first person view to look at the nice graphical polish up close. The areas were huge and beautifully detailed. Why were there small paths through them? Could they not implement collision detection for everything? First person view should be easy. Everything else I'm happy with. The length would be longer if you weren't stuck on a path, remember.

Instead of having one button for attack and one dedicated to flourishes (which is a waste, especially with such little button real estate to begin with), have two attack buttons; one for swift attacks and one for strong. The flourish move would become available on the same attack button you land a few hits with. Swift attacks would grant skill experience since they rely more on speed than strength. Light weapons would be more effective using a swift attack, likewise heavy weapons with a strong attack.

What Zeroth said is great, and it's so damned true. Heysoos also made a great point, conversation trees should be used unless they can really improve the expression system so it's actually useful. Most everything said is right. Another thing I'd like, is the hero competition that was planned originally; you meet up with other heroes randomly and you can kill them at any time, etc. Xbox 2 could handle Project Ego with ease(Look at Elder Scrolls IV screens!). They should keep it on console, I think. I always have disliked action games on the PC. Also, BBB needs to hire better writers. Seriously. *Spoilers* This ancient line of hero bullsh!t, being the descendant of the greatest hero ever, it's such a horrible way to make a RPG. They should throw you into the world like Morrowind, being some random dude. But, unlike Morrowind, not be some prophecized hero. I just think prophecy and sh!t in games is crap and WAY overused. Way too common and dumb. Fable has one of the worst stories I've ever seen. *End Spoilers* I want better Skill and Strength stuff. Skills, abilities, etc. Will gets alot of abilities, but Skill and Strength get almost nothing. You should be able to loot bodies of every person you kill, and steal everything on their body. You should be able to kill a guy in town and not get an alert unless someone else sees. There should be some way to make magic users weaker, as they are insanely strong at the moment (Enflame is the most insane magic spell I've ever seen in a game, makes you damned invincible and nets you so much XP..). Slow Time should work with the Guile expressions, like stealing, and there should be pickpocketing as well. Will's aging effect should be lessened immensely. Aging normally should be slowed immensly. More types of clothes, weapons, and things such as duel wielding, shields, staffs, scythes, etc. There should be theif style weapons, like daggers and knives, and you should be able to do stealth attacks and stealth kills. There needs to be better title names, as almost all of them that I've seen have sucked. One exception being Arseface. There should be a way so you cannot master all three abilites. Ah thats all I can think of for now.. Heh, and most of this is gonna come from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, so ya know, screw Fable 2. Silly [:p]

I like the job idea, Here is a list of jobs you should be able to have 1. Bar Tender 2. Waitress/waiter 3. Delivery person 4. Shop keeper 5. Gaurd Others too, those where the best i could think of though I think that there needs to be a better augmentation system. Not just lightining or fire. Like adding spikes, or Diamond edges for more damage, or Making it lighter. Maybe give it a glow so you can see better in the dark. I think the Silver agmentation should be changed to silver edges maybe have different areas of the sword custimizable Like the Blade, the hande, and the sword in general I think there should be more quests to do tons more quests not just heroic stuff, maybe stuff like bounty hunting Im not saying fable sucks. adding so little could make this game worth not just its weight, but and elephants weight worth in gold

My Spin on it. Free Roaming. I'll bet everyone is sick of hearing about this. I really didnt fell like Albion was a real world, like, with all the fences and load times and whatnot, it just didnt do it for me. Weapons should have a couple different models per type, say like 3 or 4 for a longsword, and you should be able to upgrade it many ways...kinda like the early ideas of Fable. Like, adding different items to the hilt, adjusting colors, and you could make it legendary after a while, and it would be COMPLETELY unique. And you could buy, perhaps something like a title for it, like if you rush at a bandit, he'll cry out, like, oh Sh**, he's got [Insert Weapon Name Here]. Perhaps a random Face generator for villagers? I always felt like they were always the same. The expression system for talking and flirting and whatnot seemed rather unexciting. I would make some type of a dialog tree...Sure its straying a lot from the expression system, but just think of it as an in-depth conversation menu. The game seemed VERY Console friendly. Make it harder, eliminate all of the guildmaster hints, and pretty much any and all help. The game should make you think, not tell you what to do. Or Something like that. Make more choices in quests. I felt very limited in the choices I was able to make. A random quest generater every so often. Like, if your just wandering the woods, you might see a random person running about. Talk to him and he'll be like, "My friends have been taken hostage at [Insert Location] by [Insert Enemies]" I do think this would be impossible to keep fresh though if all lines of text are spoken. Make some enemies scarier. I was not afraid of Balverines at all. Don't be afraid to add an elemnt of fear. Make the player dread an enemy, not be like, oh its a balverine. I guess I have to kill it. Make the mercenaries more random looking. You could just have it so they have random clothes, so it doesnt look like the same guy keeps getting ressurected. Eliminate Ressurection Phials. Make more parts of clothing Seperate. Perhaps have the torso seperated into, the actual chest armor, pauldrons (sp?) and arm parts. I think this would be more trouble than its worth though. Suggestions never do hurt though. On the subject of clothing, make many different color variations of the same armor, and when you buy the armor, have a choice to either have color. If its found, make it be random. Make what eneimes drop, matter. More than often I stopped caring what bandits dropped. Make them drop their clothing, or weapon parts or something unique to them. I know this is arguable, but I thought most of the character models looked way too goofy. The hero looks awesome, but the traders, for example, look like a 3d cartoon. I would make the graphics more realistic. I thought that you learned thief skills way to late in the guile skill tree. Make them perhaps, in the first 2 or three upgrades? Not really for the game, but PM, dont talk about your ideas. We know your ideas kick ass, but you fill us full of false hopes. Unless you guys are sure of its inclusion, keep mum about it. The guard never seem to stop respawing. Either a bug, (or I am just too lazy to fight them all) or a way to prevent us from doing some of the more indepth town economics stuff with prices dropping and whatnot. All of the stuff you wanted to include in Project Ego. Call Fable 2, Project Ego, lol. I seem to have run out of ideas. Well anyway, this took me like half hour to type, so I hope someone reads it Big Smile [:D]
