I would really love to be a game programmer but...

Hello, I love video games and I would love to be a game programmer but I have problems with math and physics. I hate it! Sad [:(] Is there is any way to be a good game programmer without being good in math and physics? I really want to work in game industry. It is my dream since I was a kid. Wink [;)] Thanks for any help. Happy [:)] P.S. Sorry for my poor English. Sad [:(]

You had good english there, don't worry Silly [:p] Well, I would suggest something really simple at first such as game maker Then maybe you can see where that ends up

Re: I would really love to be a game programmer but...

Do you wish to specifically be a programmer? because there are other jobs in the games industry that are less orientated to mathematics.

I say give it a go! you might hate maths, but the overwhelming urge to make things hapen through code may be enough to make you change your mind. have you ever made anything using a C++ environment? or another programming language. i say start off, learn the basics and write yourself a little console program, but if it's not for you then perhaps you could look into other parts of the game industry such as art or design. to get back to my original point, give it a try, you might just like it, if not then try something else.

You don't need to be good at maths and physics in order to be a programmer in the games industry. Some of us are very specialized into specific things that involve maths or physics, while others have very broad skills. Generally, there's enough work to be done in things like multiplayer code, tools, core engine things, etcetera that don't involve math. Doesn't mean that you get to be poor at maths, though. You still need to know the basics, you just don't need to be a maths wizard.

Yes, now I am working as a PHP programmer. I also know some basics of C++, C# and ASP.NET. Wink [;)]

Yes, I know, but for that kind of job it is necessarily to have strong sense of art, I think. Sad [:(]

Re: I would really love to be a game programmer but...

i use this and i'm quite young...i been doing it for about 2 weeks now. It's called Just Basic -http://www.justbasic.com/ I've made 2 games and I'm making one now. The games are simple like Word Jumbler and Guess The Number, but this can really give you a headstart to programming great games like Lionhead Studios do!

a bloody horror to give you nightmares...

Why not a videogame designer? It's much better in my opinion. You can reveal all your crazy ideas to the developers and they make it into a game. Now that's something wonderful and I don't think you need maths or physics. Smile [:)]

Re: I would really love to be a game programmer but...

But the industry needs very few "innovaters" like PM, and many programmers. So unless he set up his own company, it's not really an option.
    Boo.

That really isn't how it works.

Re: I would really love to be a game programmer but...

If you enjoy programming then go for it. Personally I am on the other end of the spectrum. I am more artistic and design led so chose to take the route of game designer.

Bare in mind however it is extremly hard to get into. I graduated with a first class in computer entertainment technology back in May and i'm currently looking for jobs of any variety just to get my foot in the door. I havnt actually applied for anything yet cos I have been busy getting my portfolio site up and running but most of the positions require industry experience and there are next to no junior positions available.

I'm staying positive however as my dad says; "You cant put a price on great ideas". And I believe I have awesome ideas.

Stay on the route of programmer and you will reep the rewards, programmer jobs all over the place.
