The Last Rites "Win an Xbox 360" Contest

About 6 months ago, I won an Xbox360 in the Lionhead Fable 2 movie competition.  i appreciate it and all, but console gaming just isn't my thing.

So from the beginning, my intent was to give it away somehow to someone in the community, either through a TMOA contest or a TMO contest.  And I wanted it to be more than a random drawing.  Plus the TMOA two-year anniversary and the 2nd Anniversary 24-Hour Show Spectacular is coming...it was time to make a decision.

With the release of the final movie in my Last Rites series, it struck me that it's a perfect opportunity to have a movie-making competition.  There are a lot of interesting characters in the four Last Rites movies, and a lot of things that aren't explored.  So my idea was, have a Last Rites movie competition, where those competing will make a movie taking place in the Last Rites "universe".

To avoid making this seem like I'm promoting the films (they are worth watching, but this isn't the place to talk about them), I'll give you an executive summary of the contest:

    The basics:

The contest begins today, and will run until Friday, February 15th, 2008.  All movies must be submitted by midnight Eastern time on that Friday.

The winners will be announced between 2 pm and 4 pm Eastern on Sunday, February 17th, 2008, during the TMOA 2nd Anniversary 24-Hour Show.

The Grand Prize winner will receive the Xbox 360, which I'll ship to whereever you might be.  It's not been opened, it's an Xbox 360 Live Platinum whatever that came to me directly from Microsoft.  Getting it to work on your power system and your TV system (if you're not in the US/Canada) is your problem, but I'm guessing it won't be that difficult.  The Grand Prize winner will also receive a limited edition Last Rites t-shirt of his/her choice, and a copy of the Last Rites DVD.   Second and third prize winners will receive the limited edition Last Rites t-shirts, and copies of the DVD.  All winning movies will also go on the DVD.

What do I have to do?

You have to make a movie set in the Last Rites "universe".  I think of them as side stories or subplots of the series.  Perhaps a prequel featuring one or more of the characters, or a sequel.  The movie can be any length (though having just finished 90+ minutes of Last Rites, I don't recommend that length), it can be VO'd or subtitled....the movies will be judged on:

    (1)  The quality of the movie, especially the story and the way you tell it.

    (2)  How well it fits into the world of Last Rites.

That's the main information.  Much more information can be found here in the Your Movies forum, where if I suggest you watch a movie I won't have my soul devoured for doing so in the wrong forum Wink [;)]

Any questions, feel free to ask here, in the official competition thread in Your Movies, through PM, or email.  If you're interested, I suggest you mosey over to the competition thread where everything is explained in great detail.

    Thanks.

    Ken

Yes, of course.  The contest isn't "Win an Xbox if you don't have one" - the contest is "Make the best Last Rites-related film and win an Xbox".

wow...how kewl.  I always wanted a 360.  I may try to come up with something for this.  (Although I suck at writing for male characters and there wasn't many female ones)   This is such a kewl contest..I may just give it a whirl.

    Yes, only two female characters....

But hey, one of them was the soul-devouring Whore of Babylon!  I bet she has a story....LOL

Sounds like a great idea Ken, and if I can manage to find some ounces of time between now and the deadline, I may just use this as a 'comeback/shake off the rust' movie Stick out tongue [:P]

Holy crapConfused [*-)] this is a very cool idea Ken. I saw in the e-mail you were looking for graphics people, do you still need any?  I'd love to enter this. But I find my story telling abilities to be lacking. I'll have a basic idea, but can't seem to expand on it. But, I just remembered, this is where I can use alot of the tips that I got from AND and Jase in the 101 workshop. I'll see what I can whip up today during work. Who knows, maybe i'll get a compelling story and be able to enter.Smily [:)]

Yup - certainly for me as a judge, the story is going to be a huge part of it - I want to learn something new about the people and situations in the Last Rites movies, something i didn't think of.

For me, certainly, a compelling story and interesting characters will get you a whole lot further than visual treats.  I like 'em, but they can only enhance a movie...they can't make one.

I guess i'll have to put my thinking cap on, an steal a few moreStick out tongue [:P], and create a captivating story . I'm finnaly able to sit down and think up a few things. Though like I said, since I am not very confident in my story telling abilities, it may restrict me from being able to think outside the box. But, that's my mind set. I haven't written enough scripts or hardly anything writing wise for movies enough to understand how to do it well. I mean, I know who the characters are, but I feel that trying to tell the story will be the hardest part for me. I'll toss around a few ideas, and hey, I've got 4 and a half hours to watch the series, and throw a few ideas together that might actaully work.

    Suggestion:

I think it would be cool if you released a "Competition Pack" that included a few things you used in the movie, for others to use in their movies. Such as:

    • StarMaker Faces: So we can have the characters
    • A few mods (sets, costumes, etc.)

Really just anything that will help in the filming process. But, it was just a suggestion.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw the other thread in "Your Movies"

Hey Kuroken, ever see the movie "Frailty"  I just got done watching the first movie in the series and it has similarities to that movie.  If not check it out, it is a G o o d [Good] movie.  But yes, fairly similar.

Yeah, Frailty was a great flick....I can see some vague and superficial similarities between the two plots, especially if you've only seen In Nomine Patris.

    Actually, they're nothing alike.

I just can't think of anything exciting that can happen.

Define exciting.  Stuff blowing up?  People getting shot?  Alien motherships destroying the city?

As the conversation between Hooker and Shaw builds into an argument in Et Spiritus Sancti, things get exciting (or at least tense).  There's something comin
g, you know there's going to have to be a resolution....neither is going to say "Okay, thanks for your time...seeya later".

Excitement doesn't have to come at the barrel of a gun or the end of a fist.  Sure, in the 85-90 minutes of story in Last Rites, there's some of both.  But much of the series is characters communicating with other characters.

As one of the five judges, I'm looking for an interesting story, G o o d [Good] dialogue, and something that expands the Last Rites "universe" in a different way.  If you can make Hooker sprout wings and fly away into the night, G o o d [Good] for you, but if the story is lousy, the dialogue unrealistic, and it has little to do with what's been established in the series, it won't be getting my vote.
