    Breadcrumb feature

Just post your thoughts on this subject here.
What do you think about it and how would it be better?

Personally I dont mind that much. I would like the ability to turn it off though.
I like it slightly more then a minimap, but its a bit strange.

What do you think of the breadcrumb trail?

    • I like it (16.8%)
    • I don't mind (17.5%)
    • I don't like it (11.9%)
    • I like it, as long as I can turn it off (46.2%)
    • The what? (7.7%)

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

I think it isn't a visual breadcrumb path, but an invisible one that only your dog can see. If that isn't what you're talking about, so what you want to turn off?

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

No the breadcrumb trail is a little path of fairy dust or whatever that leads you to your quests, your dogs leads you away from that trail in an attempt to show you other stuff.

I thought it was when you don't have a dog, the breadcrumb trail helps lead you around to major events like citys (a la Hansel and Gretel)

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

IF at any point it is a visual path on the ground, I would hope their will be a slider scale to adjust its brightness. In addition to the dog I would like to see other gentle path signs, the correct path has a little brighter street signs, the lamp outside is a different color then normal. If you’re looking for a bad guy the trees and plaints could get deader as you get closer to him. Teach players to be observant of their environment.

Well yes, but it's not going to be literal breadcrumbs is it? At least I hope not. I was thinking more like a faint 'imaginary' (i.e. not technically a feature of the landscape) line that guided you to where you needed to be. If done well, I can see it working. It's no more crazy than having a strange power to see an overhead birds eye view of everything around you (A minimap)
The idea of breadcrumb navigation has nothing to do with the literal meaning. It's mostly used to describe web navigation. Link.

Has Peter actually gone into any detail of this sytem and is there any screenshots of it in action?

So is the breadcrumb feature like an in-game GPS?

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

What i thought it would be when i first heard about it is like a faint trail of golden sparkles or something that lead you on the quickest path to the quest you've selected. Just my thoughts but i cant see it as anything else. So yeah, if its like that it's basically GPS

I don't like it. That is all I can say. Hmm [^o)]

I feel that markers such as Halo has would do a better job of conveying where the player needs to go in relation to their current position.

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

There are supposed to be multiple trails in different colors. Every source that I have heard discuss it has either stated it is a terrible idea or has hinted at their dislike but not actually came out and said it. From the information available I believe I agree. I am supposed to be on an advantage to save the world not find Lucky Charms.Tired [:tired:]

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

    Taken from IGN:

    IGN:
The bread crumb trail is color-coded and dynamically changes based on the interests you show as a gamer. It looks pretty cheesy. Just imagine a line of fairy dust sparkling from your feet, along a path and into the horizon. You dog's job, apparently, is to lead you off the breadcrumb trail.

I'm ok with the idea, but if it's like how IGN described it, I think I'd rather have mini-maps.  Ninja [:ninja:]

Then again, the design will probably be altered severely, as it is work in progress...

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

Is it really going to be fairy dust? Or is that just what IGN are saying? I haven't had the time to really keep up with what has been announced so i'm some what out of the loop, but it would seem more logical to have people guided by signposts or markers along their path rather than have a continuous stream of fairy dust ... but still I don't think it would bother me too much as it isn't forcing me to follow it, and it would be nicer than following the blip on a mini map ... I mean I don't think "radars" which mini-maps always remind me of, would really fit the fable vibe anyway ...

I would need a video demonstration to make any real comments on this "line of fairy dust", I can't just assume what it looks like or how it will function within the game world based on just a few words of text.Zip it! [:#]

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

I quite like the idea. It may get annoying if it's done badly, but if it's done well I could see it working very well. As long as it doesn't distract too much from the environment. I would actually quite like the opionn of togglng it on and off. So, for example, you might just feel like running around exploring, so you don't need the breadcrumb system and you toggle it off. If, after a while, you decide to do a quest, you can  toggle it on and go in search of whatever. That's what I think anyway. Hmm [^o)]

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

I'm not big on the breadcrumb trail idea, I think it kind of ruins purpose of the dog.  If the dog only exists to take players off the path then why travel with him?  Won't people go off the path and explore without him?

It seems kind of funny that they would go this route.  Wasn't it recently said that they didn't use all the buttons on the controller?  So why not have a button to switch your dog's AI from quest to explore?  If you want the dog to lead you to every group of hobbes in Albion just put him on explore and he will lead you off the path.  Put him on quest and he will lead you to where you need to go, if you get to a point where a side quest and main quest branch have him stand there and you then need to make the first move.

If they wanted to keep the dog 100% control free they could map that button to a full screen map page.  If someone was to give you a quest in a far away place you think they would tell you how to get there, every quest could come with a new map.  So your in the middle of nowhere, hit your back button, full screen map pops up and shows you the path you need to follow, moving your thumbstick sideways will change your quest maps.

Hopefully whatever they come up with works well, I just don't like on screen reminders of what to do and where to go.

    Windows 7 was my idea!

    Re: Breadcrumb feature

It doesn't make alot of sense as one of the main reasons PM hates the min map is because it detracts of the game and has the player staring at a little circle instead of exploring and appreciating the environment. This breadcrumb trail does a similar thing, instead of the player staring at a circle he is staring at and following a line.

Seriously, I thought the dog was your mini-map and guide? Is this "fairy dust" rumour even coming from a legitimate source? Honestly because I'd take anything that isn't announced by Lionhead or Mr. Molyneux himself with a grain of sand.
