I've always loved Peter's candid nature in interviews, especially here lately.  I think the last few paragraphs of that article are truly the focal point.  Lionhead has grown a lot in the past few years.  I think Fable II is going to surprise a lot of people.

Re: (SPOILER ALERT!) Exploring Fable II - Has Lionhead finally made a game to match the hype?

PM: “My dream is really to make a game where people can be what they want to be and they don’t feel shackled by us as designers – that they have to be this sort of person, or do this in this kind of situation.”

This is one of my favorite things about F2...in a lot of these sorts of games, I make most of my choices based on what sort of character I want to be. I'm usually thinking of what I want my "morality stats" to read out after this interaction rather than what consequence I want to see or even - what should have been the point - what I (or my character if I'm trying to roleplay) actually want(s) to do. I can't wait to just *do* stuff and actually have it mean something. Of course even this way I probably won't get more than 2 playthoughs before I'm just playing with the system again, exploring to see what kinds of looks I can have...

They did a fantastic job writing that article.  Really encompasses how I feel about what Fable 2 could be, I can only hope it holds true to what we have been told.

For the record, I think it will.

I likes the article. I really liked PM cursing, it gave the human element to the interview. If only I could take PM out drinking...imagine the secrets I could hear lmao. I would just mention Brothel and he would probly jump in the car lol. But no in all seriousness I cant wait and I cant wait for the offical site to be up. Also I cant wait for someone to quote the OP lmao ha ha

sorry for the double post, but I had to point this out.

    BYRNEDA:

While trying to show off a few more specifics of the towns, Molyneux also demonstrates something that few people would expect: it’s all running regardless of where you are.  Using a debug menu to shoot into the air and scan across the world from a vantage point (and inadvertently demonstrating far more effectively than concept art ever could the stunning range and vision accomplished by the art team) you see villagers going about their business next to a shop; on a path there’s a band of rogues sitting round their campfire waiting for an unwary traveller; near the outskirts there are two children running around each other.  At this point, the player character is in a different part of Fable II’s world in another town: the simulation is running seamlessly.  It’s not particularly heralded by Molyneux (though he does insist that “this is simply how it has to be”), but more so than anything else shows the ambition and scales of the project, and hints at something more than exaggeration behind Carter’s assertion that “it’s ten times bigger than we thought it would be.”

Thats amazing! does this mean that it is entirely free roam and not just huge regions separated by walls? because alot of us though it would just be huge areas that you still had to go through a gate to get somewhere else, but this could thwart that theory.... possibly.

I doubt it, although the regions could just be ridiculously large. I think it would just be great to play as a trader, exploring all the lands of Albion, just to see how the Npcs react with eachother.

PM did say in an interview, whilst demoing gameplay, that "if you can see it, you can go there".

I don't think there was really anything new... just the way they talked about the features; like "multilayered" personalities and and the way people go on living whether you're there or not. It just really made me want to play Fable II so much!! Why is it so far away? Cry []

Re: (SPOILER ALERT!) Exploring Fable II - Has Lionhead finally made a game to match the hype?

It was a great article; Edge is probably one of the best game magazines around. It's funny how Fable 2 is being perceived now compared to its predecessor. When Fable was first announced, it caused a storm of hype, and then as its release neared and the features promised were cut, all that hype seemed to deflate. Whereas now, with Fable 2, when it was announced there was doubt as to whether it would live up to any of its promises, but as it nears its release, there's optimism as the game looks to be living up to its promises. One things for certain, the end of October is going to be G o o d [Good] for RPG fans!

So how do you bridge this divorce between a game’s mechanical interactions and its narrative paths?  Carter and Molyneux talk about specific incidents, which we’ll avoid for the sake of the experience.  But in conceptual terms what you will face in some of Fable II’s most crucial moments is a stark truth: G o o d [Good]ness isn’t rewarded.  It might be the right thing to do, but it’s often not the sensible thing to do, and you avatar’s entire character, both internally and externally, will be affected in a way that many players will find, at best, disquieting and, at worst, an outrage.  And if your choices affect your character’s physical wellbeing, strength and abilities – and not in the tired old ‘dark path – dark powers’ way – will you be content with just the warm glow of having done something right?  “The things that begin to happen to you and your final choice,” begins Louise Copley, Fable II’s executive producer, “they’re hard, hard things – but that’s the path of a hero.  Do you want to be one or not?”  You can lose almost everything.  You can lose your hard-won experience.  You can grow old and you can be permanently scarred.  You’ll be bullied by other characters, and they won’t hesitate to mock the type of player you are.  It’s taken a while to find expression in games, but now being G o o d [Good] isn’t about wanting to be G o o d [Good] and clicking the right option: it’s about self-sacrifice.  “Now it’s hard,” says Carter.  “So, you’re G o o d [Good].  What if that stops you doing this?  Still G o o d [Good]?  What if we take this, and this, and this from you?  Still G o o d [Good]?”

this part really reminded me of the tales of albion #2, meaning liek when the hero in tales of albion saves knothole glade from bandits, he is being a hero doing a G o o d [Good] deed, but the townspeople turn on him for it. so I'm thinking that in fable 2 the heroes may still be hunted or if not hunted, disliked so by doing G o o d [Good] deeds and being a heroe it get's you eventually hated by the people of albion jsut liek in tales of albion.

this would tie in with where in this interview he says that being G o o d [Good] will be harder because i mean if you saved a town then everyone turned on you and started shouting and putting you down for being a hero, then to be honest youd jsut say oh ok lets slaughter the townspeople!

I am sure i jsut explained my point very badly, but if anyone can understand what i mean? and does anyone agreee with me? Rambo [:rambo:]

Blimy BYRNEDA! You type this. Thanks alot if you did, you just saved me money. Very interesting articles, the author really put his finger on what matters in a game. Im tempted to buy Shadow Of The Colossus now.
