I finally got my child to safety. The trick is NOT to tell her to follow you. She will follow on her own. Once I got topside her mother was there to pick her up. Finally got threw it!!!

I tried doing as CopperPhoenix suggested [after 2 failed previous attempts] and guess what? Yep - it works a treat! Don't use the follow expression on your offspring and they'll auto follow you out of the cave AND up the ladder to Rookridge where your spouse will be waiting for the safe return of ur child.

Since, I never found my spouse I gave up on the quest and went and found another spouse.

The game offered the bigamest quest, and my spouse showed back up without a wedding ring over his head. Calling himself my hubby. We have since had another child. Our son is still in the Hobbe Cave, but when restarting the quest my spouse doesn't acknoledge the quest at all and the bread crumb trail doesn't show up.

i just have to say that i killed my wife and then got the quest i couldnt even be bothered anymore i'd explored hobbe cave time and time again i looked everywhere and just gave up. i was leaving my family anyway (i was to to stay tied back by a family) so i just moved on, started my empire of houses and just all round completed the game.

I have messed up my game save thanks to this buggy quest.

Upon saving my kid from the Hobbe Cave she would not follow up the ladder to Rookridge,
the quest still told me to escape the cave!
I have since killed the wife, the quest has vanished and I have saved the game.

Still though I am unable to fast travel at all, I get the "your child will be killed by the horrible hobbes" message, cancel or reload old save (old save now being more recent than wifes death)

Well, its pretty much unplayable unless I want to run everywhere now.
Such a shame as I had 5 Gargoyles to go and some other Achievements within my grasp.
I hope it can be fixed by a patch but not holding my breath.

Oh well, Gears of War 2 is very soon.

yeah, i've ended up getting to the quest on about 7 different games i've done, and the same thing always happens.

i get the rescue quest on my list, and in this case it will fast travel me to fairfax gardens. instead of there being a gold trail that leads to nowhere as i've seen many other people say on this, there is NO trail at all. my wife's status is happy (it better be, her upkeep is 10k daily), but both her and my son are gone.

maybe if i reset my marital home to something other than the castle...? i'm at a serious loss, i hate this quest! ='(

I found something interesting about this, I was checking my log book and it stated that I had been widowed once. I am thinking that my missing spouse died, it was logged in the log book but the game failed to recognize this.

When I remarried the game generated a double for the bigamest, but it did not fully recognize him as my spouse. I took the double out and had him killed. Seems to have fixed the problem, but the quest hasn't been offered since.

Ugh, yeah, I get a glitch there too. When I got the glitch, I was in the process of moving my family to another home. My kid and husband were following me. Then I get the quest, accept, and I can't take the father off follow. So every time I go to the cave, he ends up getting killed. Then it says my kid's gunna be taken away. Only thing is, she never is. I get out of the cave fine, but then she just stands in the corner in the building that you appear out of. The father's dead, so he isn't waiting. I've retried four times, but it always happens the same way. And when I reset it, it goes to right after I'd accepted the quest. So my husband's on follow every. Single. Time. x_x

In my case, The Rescue went fine first time I did it on a female character married to Andy(I think that is his/her name, the one you can marry though the quest from the ghost), and I had no glitch and was living in Fairfax Castle, but the second time I did it with a Male character, married to Lady Grey and living in the castle, all went well up until I completed the quest. Now when I go home to see my characters wife, the gold trail leads me into a wall in the Fairfax Garden.

Here's my problem. I start the question but when I go to Bowerstone Market my gold trail disappears. I live right near the stylist. Well I've tried going through hobbes cave, didn't find my son nor did it help me find a path to find my husband. Tried another quest and still can't find my husband. I've tried turning my game off and turning back on but nothing. I even tried sleeping for a week, I found my husband but he didn't have the ring over his head but acted like we were still married. I turned the game off and am now back at square one. I've been doing this for hours. PLEASE someone tell me what I should do or how to fix this. Please. Please. Please.

  My character fell through the ground and is somehow stuck in the atmosphere... no dirt, buildings, no people.  I see moon, rain and atmospheric fog.  I thought "Am I dead?"  Nope.  I'm still collecting cash whilst in this perpetual vaulting position.

After the second time of trying to get the damn kid to follow me up the ladder. I went to what sounds like the same place you did. Especially the end result of falling through the ground and getting stuck with only two options: first, collect gold. Second, shut off and restart the game. Neat!

I'm getting the same thing. I went through the entire rescue, got to the ladder, and when I got into the abandoned carriage house, my husband was waiting for me but the kid was in the corner.... just swinging her arms.
My husband was giving m gifts and saying how much he loved me and no matter what I did, the kid wouldn't move.
I did this six different times. Might I mention, I never had to ask her to follow...she just did.

Well, on my last try, I decided "okay, go through it. when you get to the ladder, ask her to follow you." well, she followed all right.... right back into the corner. The most response I got was a gasp when I pulled out my crossbow and tried to shoot her in the head. Ofcouse saftey was still on. This time, my spouse wasn't waiting for me.

I don't know what to do. It's really really pissing me off.


Edit: Might I also mention that the game returns me to the bridge of Bowerstone Market... not to my husband who is at the farm place. The same place where the 'Blind Date' quest was at. I bought it and married one of the guys there. Anywhoo... like I said it takes me to bowerstone market and not back to my husband. But the trail is still there to go to the cave.

I found a post saying to manually go to the cave and not port there then have the kid follow you on their own. I'm going to try it and I'll let you know how it goes.


EDIT: Well, the husband showed up. And he crouched down to the child and said "Ah, I've missed you." But she is still zombie like. I think I am going to try again and when she follows me on her own, at the end I'm going to try to dismiss her. I don't know if it will work as it is automatic follow but I'm going to give it a try. If it doesn't then I'm going to forget about the quest I suppose.... unless anyone else has ideas.


Edit: When respawning the quest, it put me right back at the door of the cave. The one in the abandoned carriage place... so I think I did that part right by manually following. Let's see if I can make it work. Edit: Okay I've got the kid. Let's hope this works. It's faster going through the latch door, I think. Less hobbes, oddly.

Edit: It didn't work. I was just thinking maybe if I had her follow me and then dismissed her at the end.... I'm determined even if I am sick of this quest. x.x My husband was still waiting.


EDIT: ....... Need I even say anything? I don't see how anyone is getting around this quest... My husband wants to give me a gift... perhaps if I go see him first and get the gift, he will automatically get the child? I don't know. Worth a shot. Here it goes.... u.u


Edit: I feel silly..... After going to see my husband I realize that it is a different husband and the husband I need was never waiting. I just went to him to get the letter again.

So, my husband never showed. The other one still did. BAH. I give up. Jessica will just have to stay in that cage until they eat her. u.u And my husband will have to get over it.

Edit: Okay okay. I'm going to try this: Accept all gifts from every husband. THEN go get the letter. Perhaps it'll work.

EDIT: ................... So I go to accept all the gifts... to the one that shows up first and my kid dies. THIS has never happened before in all the times I have left the area to try something else. Oh well... Guess I'll just go on with other quests. I wish I had my dog back... BUT noooo.. I had to be a saint and save -everyone else's- family. Damn.

Ok, i have done the quest about 5 times in a row. EACH time i have the same out come. I rescue the kid, she follows me out and bam ZOMBIE.  She stands there and won't move or respond to any follow, gift, any emote. 

 I have tried the whole follow no follow big after getting her out of the cage, but alas no hubby waiting for me either when im out of the cave. There are how ever assasins that are wating for me just out side, which i kill. But there is still the Big glowing circle around my kid. I stay there FOREVER and nothing.

I think I will just go kill the father so child services will take them away.

Is there any way to get past this?

I've even left the xbox on overnight to see if she would EVER move but she doesn't. I've experienced so many glitches in this game that I don't know whether to trade it in, run it over with my car, or mail it to Lionhead's corporate office and demand a refund be sent. Whomever gave the final signoff to this game should be fired, along with whomever was in charge of the testing.

I had the same problem - BUT I HAVE FIXED MINE!!!

All I did was SELL the letter you were given to the Bookstore... Although your child will die, you can carry on the game... small sacrifice really... (although, my wife was also killed in the castle battle as she wouldn't stop following me) - But I can now finish the game off without any of the annoying issues with this mission.

ok I had the same problem. If you are telling your child to follow you with the expression then thats why this is happening. Instead, don't tell your child to follow you just continue on to the exit of the cave and make sure to kill all the hobbes on the way there. Climb up the ladder and your spouse will be waiting for you outside. This took me so many restarts to figure out.

I have figured out how to prevent the zombie bug.

step 1 - Sell the letter from your child to the bookstore
step 2 - run to the Hobb Cave back entrance in Rookridge (very important DO NOT FAST TRAVEL)
step 3 - follow the path to your child's cage (you should get the key on the way) and kill the Hobbes on the way
step 4 - after you open the cage wait for your child to say "let's go home" and begin following you.
step 5 - use the social gesture your child likes the most (mine was victory arm pump)
step 6 - follow the path back out of the cave and kill the Hobbes on the way

When you exit the cave your spouse will be waiting for you.

Note0- do not use any other emote on your child. No follow, no Dismiss, etc...

Note1- if you enter the Hobbe cave from the front entrance your spouce will be waiting for you in the cave. This will get you stuck in the quest restart loop and force your child into zombie mode again. DO NOT DO THIS

Note to developers - To patch this bug and several other variations out of the game simply change the quest path so that it will not lead you to the main enterance to the cave, and change the quick travel location to Rookridge outside the rear entrance.

This has only been tested on 1 version of this bug as I haven't hacked the 360 and can't mod save files to test others, but following steps 2+ should resolve the most other issues.

a way i fixed this glitch is to set the budget to zero, leave the area you're in and then go back
i did this twice and it worked
(she dissapeared until i had the rescue quest where she reappeared and then went away afterwards)
(remember to set the budget back to what it was before
