    MrThump2:
And you didn't? I don't see your point. I didn't make a poor contribution to this forum. I just simply stated to him to contrbuted something worthwhile to this forum other than making an a** out of himself. Yes he free to say what he wants, but insults no I consider that flaming, but again that my opinion.

See I wasn't the one that decided to post that he was childish and made poor contributions to the forum ... and I am sorry if you feel insulted because that wasn't my intention ... I personally don't consider being told that I made a poor contribution to a forum an insult.

I also happen to think this is a somewhat interesting thread whose topic approaches the difference between the rules of engagement online behind an avatar and offline (aka the real life) being the so-called yourself.

I just took your a post as an extremely poor contribution to the discussion at hand and I think my contributions actually add something to the conversation at hand.

If you still fail to see my point I believe calling someone childish or suggesting they need serious help is an insult ... well you just advocate not insulting while doing the same.

Therefore your point is in my eyes no longer valid not to mention conflicting and contradicting. In my opinion that constitutes a poor contribution to this forum.

So calling somebody a twat is not an insult? I have to disagree with your post to be a contribution. I personally have a little more tact and respect for people that I converse with whether it being online or over the phone. I believe when you post something on a forum, if somebody disagree's with their opinions shouldn't be be call retards or anything derogatory. I would like to think we are adults and not children.  I didn't see point of the orignal post or did I miss something? It was just the way the individual post was presented in its content.

    Re: I'm a *** on here, guys

I have  never believed in trash talking on the phone or on the internet.  I personally see it as cowardice.   If I have latent anger issues, I go to the gym, or I spend time working in the garden.  I don't take it out on online people.  There was a time in RL if someone popped off to me,  they had better be ready for one hell of a fight, but I realized how ignorant that was. Now I simply ignore them. and  I do the same online,  But you need to understand that not everyone is the same age as I am, or has the maturity level Del has.  Sometimes you might be  calling some 13 year old kid an idiot.  ect. to each his own, but I personally would not want that on my conscience IRL or on the internet.   I try to adhere to the same moral conduct as I would IRL.

Don't you reply to this, damnit, but I love you, Orcid, you're one of the most handsome and well composed men I have had the pleasure of accompanying down this beautiful road of life, and it doesn't matter what happens on this internet, my feelings will remain the same.
I only wrote this because I hate you.

    Re: I'm a *** on here, guys

I think the whole "being a *** on the internet" thing is pretty weak.

I don't mind rough talk or discussions, on or off the line, as long as I know that the people in question are essentially G o o d [Good] people, and after the heated debate there'll be no hard feelings. This requires that I know the person though, and I don't necessarily do that on the web.

In real life too, you have people that talk s*** to people. Maybe they disagree with something, but generally they just get off on acting dominant. On the internet, anyone have this ability, not just the ones with balls. Make no mistake, I have no more sympathy for RL douchebags. Anyone that tries to feel bigger by making others feel smaller is weak.

    Re: I'm a *** on here, guys

A few days late, but what the hell.

    The_Orcid:
Don't get me wrong, it's not as if I don't have opportunities to trash somebody's *** face-to-face. It's just a combination of not wanting to see their actual hurt feelings and not wanting to interact with them on an intellectual level. On the nets, I'm sorta removed from both of those.

So the question is, what is the more 'true' expression of yourself:
Your behavior when faced with the full consequences of your actions, or your behavior when said consequences are minimal at best?

    The_Orcid:

Namecalling on the nets isn't gonna provoke the same emotional response you'd get out of a dude(tte) in real life. It's just not gonna hurt 'em as much, because of that anonymity that they also have.

This is cheap rationalization; quickly followed up by dismissing those who are affected by such as 'emotionally weak' or 'thinskinned' or somesuch.

Also, what really insulates us from being hurt by you acting like a fuckwad is not our pseudoanonymity; it's yours. But that also insulates us from the core message you're wrapping up in the hostility.

You can say what you want. But if I think you're being a douchebag, I'm unlikely to take any part of it seriously - in which case you might as well have not said anything at all.

I agree with you Xaos Prophet.  if I think someone is just being an A**  I just tune them out all together. I may not like everything that is posted, or may believe that someones opinion is misguided, but that does not give me the right to personally attack them. I may strongly disagree with their idea,   Think Kant's Categorical imperative. "Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law." What would the internet be like if we all acted that way?

I don't think I'm smart enough for that to make sense I guess.

Why don't you try contribing something worth while to this forum instead of bashing other users. If you think name calling is way unleashing your dark side you need to grow and stop being childish. If you think berating people for their opinions is way to get your rocks off, you need serious help.

Well, if their opinions are stupid ... afraid [:afraid:]

I think you all bullshit yourselves too much. Too much feel G o o d [Good] Felix Adlerism. Charity, charity, charity.

Also, my threads are more stimulating than everything on the front page combined (excepting this one). Smoker [:zmoker:] Also excepting Science or Religion. Seriously, I just looked. It's definitely better.

Edit: I think I mostly just take this less seriously than you guys. It's not even about being just a jackass. It's a damn forum. Everyone needs to loosen up. Comparing me to the holocaust, for example. Which, by the way, is somewhat, creepily, gratifying. Not the murder, no, but the sheer scope and impact on history.

    Re: I'm a *** on here, guys

    The_Orcid:

Allow me to test my hypothesis. This is SCIENCE, so take a step back.

     You're a ***.

Now, how do you feel? You feel loose? You feel ... dandy? I bet'cha! Granted, if I was calling you names in real life it probably wouldn't affect you either.

But, I guess namecalling isn't really what I'm going for here. I'm talkin' more ... ideas. If you told me about your secret desire to be a cranberry farmer in Maine and I said you were stupid, would you really feel as bad as if I had done so in real life? Nah. 'Cause I'm some Internet dude. You possibly lacked the chutzpa to tell people in real life.

I'm not trying to defend my behavior here, gentlemen, so you can get off your "uh-oh is Orcid worried about Karma" bandwagon right quick.

    'Cause I ain't. You suck.

What I'm trying to do, is suggest that people genuinely are more open to criticism as much as I'm more open to giving it ...because of the very same supposed anonymity that I have. And what evidence do I have?

WELL, I do declare that I, myself, am more open to criticism. I ignore it. Because it comes from say, Del. Well, ignore is too harsh. I take it for what it is. You can say some folks aren't more receptive to bluntness (i.e. people who kill themselves because they had their grammar corrected), but they're already screwed up anyway and don't count. Any other evidence? The fact that I'm more open to giving criticism. It stands to reason there's an interrelation hur.

Now, I do find it interesting you suggest I would behave as I really would in real life with no social pressure ... then I guess that's not real life anymore, is it? I think you're using faulty reasoning to compare the nets and the real life. They're two separate entities defined by that very lack of societal ... pressure. Should we be applying what we know/feel about interaction in real life to a place so different as the Internet?

Plus, lest we forget that I'm not anonymous either. I'm The_Orcid. ~_^. Wubbly Red Thing. I've been on this forum for six years in one form or another and I consider guys like Amaunator a kind of faux-acquaintance (Amaunator is sweeeet dude. Holla', Ammy!), and I consider folks like fel64 to be one of my very bests friends. I consider this board to be my ...  online home. My hub.

This place has a weird, creepy sentimental value. I guess there's a sort of personal vendetta against the level of suckitude it's descended to. I don't have respect for the perceived perpetrators. It's really only on this particular forum where I am a *** whatsoever (nets wise).

But what I'm not trying to do here is defend myself, I was more making a point about what anonymity is.

what i think it is, people who don't have enough power in the "real" world tend to become "cyber bullies".

or people who are bullies are "cyber bullies"

the point is (i''m agreeing 100% with what you are saying orcid) that saying *** to people online shouldn't really affect them as is they were getting *** from people in life.

so all i have to say is *** YOU BITCHES THAT DON'T AGREE WITH THIS!!!!!!

Sweet? I kinda dig the psychological analysis stuff. In general. If anyone else would like to shoot, go for it. I internally monologue about it all the time.

I don't think it's about power. I mean, what power am I exerting here, guys? I think it's been made fairly clear I am the *** people want to ignore. Smoker [:zmoker:] I'm not trying to bully anyone, I'm telling them what I think, unfiltered by bullshit. I'm not doing it for the sake of making people feel bad, I'm doing it because it's what I actually think. Scarily enough. Not that it's really scary. The competent ones like Del think the same people I think are re-friggin'-tarded are too. He's just such a classy guy he doesn't say it.

I have two things I jackass at (:awe: )

    Stupid opinions
    and
    Uptightness

It's not a power thing. It's more of a ... whatever that would be thing. Somone psychoanalyze that.

yea like three dolars really isn't anything. i guess you could call it charity? but my point really is unless i see that you (not your orcid, people in general) aren't trying to do *** for yourself and only rely on other people, i say *** you. because honestly why should i waist my hard earned *** for the sake of bums that are too lazy to help themselves you know.

little kids i don't have too much of a problem helping out but they aren't affecting me so i don't really care (not trying to sound E v i l [Evil] or anything). but i believe you should only care for urself and the people close too you. because if you care for other people your only going to stabbed in the back. and from what bruce willis says in live free or die hard he's completely right.

the only thing you get from being a hero is a divorce, your kids not talking to you anymore, and a pat on the back. like people say they are G o o d [Good]  people but once you are exposed to the real world your soul becomes tainted by the media.

if you were to live away from the media and other people you would be a G o o d [Good] person. but once we are exposed we become corrupt. and since this is a lionhead forum why not bring fable2 to this topic.

for instance say you were the hero, you claim to be such a G o o d [Good] person but would you rather choose to save your family or 1000 people you don't know?

I find it ironic that YOU are bagging on people because they  disagree with you. and so you resort to saying their ideas or THEY are dumb. has it ever occured to you that is what they are saying to YOU, only in a respectful manner.  ROFL!  kind of ironic.

If three bucks improves somebody's quality of life instead of just making you fatter or more jacked up on coffee, then it's the right thing to part with the money.

Survival of the fittest doesn't apply to our current society because you don't need any worthwhile attribute to get very far, you just need to be underhanded, dishonest, and most of the time American.

I would rather live in a society of equal living people who live at an average living standard than live in a society with some people far above the average, and some people far below.

    2. yes they do take this *** wayyyyyy to seriously. and comparing you to the holocaust makes me laugh. these people are just so dumb. i bet they have absolutly no idea about the holocaust other than consentration camps. i know almost everything about WW2 and the holocaust and just because you discriminate stupid ideas doesn't mean you are even a tiny bit like holocaust.

You realised while reading that Orcid was the only one who compared his attitude to the shoa, right? Paranoid [:aranoid:]

i believe you should only care for urself and the people close too you. because if you care for other people your only going to stabbed in the back.

Nice theory, but if you only care for yourself then who are those "close to you" ?

Perchance the stupid buggers that are too dumb to only care for themselves ? afraid [:afraid:]

it's not a matter of making Americans look bad. i'm trying to show you everyone is bad. i'm not attacking the american person i am attacking the human race.

Not one man/woman in this world is a perfect !00% G o o d [Good] person. with that everyone has sins.

and our country was created with the mind that we want to become independent. George washington himself stated that we should not be worried about forgein affairs and we should worry for ourselves.

and we do say "screw the other guy". when have we entered a war that we had nothing to do with benifitting our country?

the media brainwashes us to believing what they want. and if you do not believe this you have lost your mind.

Aren't you a little young for such a fatalistic world-view?

I'm sure you understand that any man, no matter how revered by a society, can make a statement that has no relevance to the world 250-plus years later. See: Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

No. Want to know what the true "media conspiracy" is? The "media" reports what it thinks will garner the highest ratings in order to attract advertising dollars to keep itself in business. Only a fool believes everything he/she reads or hears on the evening news.

i'm not a fukin little kid you dipshit.

i do understand that, but what you said about our country not being founded with the principal "screw the other guy" us being independent and him wanting us to be isolated from forein affairs, is practically saying screw the other guy. because say another country asked us for help we woulda said no.

and yes i know all about the media conspiresy i just tried to brief it as much as possible

    Stick out tongue [:P]

It's just how I prefer my social interactions I guess. I mean, if I meet a girl on the internet and they show me a picture of themselves, I don't go 'Oh god, you're as hot as a curry, I just wanna do you on the kitchen floor all night long and will you cyber me?' even if that's the first thought that flies through my head. Similarly if someone less attractive posts a picture of themselves I don't feel it's a G o o d [Good] idea to go and post 'oh god you're so ugly you look like a plastic surgeon didn't know your arse from your elbow, or your face for that matter! You make leprous mules look like beauty queens.' even if that's what I think of how they look.

What I actually think is very scary and if I acted on it and posted on it because it's the internet and I just can then Bad Things are supposed to happen. I don't know what those bad things are, but I sure as hell don't want to find out!!!

I find nothing wrong with debunking stupid opinions per se, I more have a problem with doing this:

"Holy hell, you actually believe that? Did your mother drop you on your head and then proceed to boil you in liquid stupidity? Of course golden marmosets can play dominos and solve simple sudoku puzzles! Numpty."

Rather than simply explaining why they're wrong. It's also far more satisfying without insults, but that might just be me. (of course sometimes it degenerates into plenty of ad hominem, but that happens in real life too. You just gotta kiss and make up).

The only thing worse than beating a dead horse is betting on one.

Arguing with an idiot on the internet only serves to make you angrier, which makes you shout things at your dog when she tries to get on your bed.

I only wrote this because I hate you.
