Nowadays it essentially comes down to this.

Xbox 360 has more exclusives, or worthwhile exclusives

PS3 has free online and worthwhile exclusives.

    Fixed that for you.

I don't mean the PS3 doesn't have any worthwhile exclusives, I just mean that the 360 has more of them.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

I'm starting to wonder if I should buy either of them right now. I've always been more of a pc gamer. Unfortunately, titles for the pc are running thin these days.

So I thought to myself, "self, we need a new toy! Maybe a new game console will do the trick!"

The problem is when I look at the selection of games for any platform it all looks stale. Nothing is stimulating my melon. I feel like developers have hit a brick wall when it comes to creatiing a new, unique experience for players. Indy games seem more appealing now-a-days. However, do I want to buy a console just for Indy games. That selection isn't all that great either.

Maybe I'm too picky. Or too old. Thirty-something isn't too old is it? Nah! I'm picky.

You see usually when I buy a game it costs $60 and I play it for two days and then I'm bored. The developers spent years making this game. I spend the money so their happy, but in the end the game loses it's charm after a couple of days. That's terrible don't you think?

How many games have you bought that really held your attention for longer than a few days?

By the way, I'm not talking about the Fable games or anything that Lionhead has done. I'm talking about games in general.

I should get to bed. This post will probably be meaningless in the morning. Maybe I've just had too much caffiene today.

    Later.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

I think some great games are saints row 2 and mass effect. I think both are on the PC and 360.

I have played mass effect on the PC and it was just as G o o d [Good] as the 360 version.

I don't know how well saints row 2 is on the PC because I have only played it on the 360. It is the best co-op game I have ever played. Part of that is voice chat on the 360 so I don't know if you will get the same experience on the PC. I suggest checking out some reviews on the PC version.

I haven't had the money to spend on games in a while so I don't have a big list to give you.Sad [:(]

You might find Xalan that you should just stick with a PC. The really G o o d [Good] games I can think of at the moment are all available on PC (excluding fable 2 Paranoid [:aranoid:] ) such as Left 4 Dead 2, Saints Row 2, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed 2 just to name a few.

Thanks heroicalarm and sim656 for your comments. I think you're right. Maybe I should stick to the pc right now. I still feel like I want something new though.

Quick question about playing people online (360 or PS3) -- Can people in America play online with people living in Europe? Does it depend on how the game sets up it's servers?

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

It depends on the dev on both systems, EA usually region locks their games. But yeah PS3 is region free which is pretty useful for importing stuff.

Btw saints row 2 on pc is a terrible port, stay away from that ***. Much better on 360 and PS3.

    XALAN:

Not many i have to admit. Only the ones with online in but i would still say a game like batman arkham asylum was totally worth buying.

    heroicalarm:
Not trying to bash the playstation 3 but besides uncharted and infamous what exclusive titles are already out for the playstation 3 that are any G o o d [Good]? I know god of war 3 and kingdom hearts 3 are are going to come out and by that time I might buy one. But are there any other G o o d [Good] games that I don't know about? Any G o o d [Good] rpg's?

RPGs are curiously thin on the ground for the PS3. Certainly on the western side of things, at any rate. Dunno if there's more only out in Japan. There's a few PS1 RPGs in the store - FFVII etc - but obviously they're just the PS1 versions re-released.

However, as you asked about exclusives worth playing you may have have missed - here's a list. It's completely arbitary, all I did was go to Gamerankings.com and skim all the games only available for PS3 from it's top ranked list, in order of ranking, stopping at 85%. No way to judge games, I know...

    Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
    LittleBigPlanet
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
    WipEout HD Fury
    Killzone 2
    Demon's Souls
    MLB 09: The Show
    Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
    Warhawk - Operation: Fallen Star
    Wipeout HD
    Flower
    MLB 08: The Show
    Valkyria Chronicles
    Resistance 2
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time
    inFamous
    Resistance: Fall of Man
    Comet Crash
    Super Stardust HD
    Shatter
    Gran Turismo HD Concept

Arguably you could add stuff like Motorstorm to that but to be honest I've played all 3 games in the series, and the PSP one is the most enjoyable. And I'd put Echochrome in there, but I like echochrome...

The thing is, if you'd asked me about Xbox360 exclusives, I'd struggle beyond Halo 3, Gears of War 2 and Fable II. But I'm sure that if you compiled a list the same way as above, you'd come up with a comparable list of games. All that really shows is that if you don't buy games for a console, you don't really follow the games coming out for it I guessWink [;)]

Off the top of my head, the two big ones in the past few years would be Oblivion - which I still come back to - and LittleBig Planet, which is basically timelessly inventive if you get into the construction side of things and start playing user levels. Not everyone gets that, or wants to use their imagination though, in which case LBP is a much shorter affair.

But, much like maggot, I'd say something like Batman was well worth the money. See, I'm quite happy to pay £50 for a game that'll last around 12 hours. Providing those 12 hours are really entertaining. It's roughly the same value as going to the cinema, when you work out cost per hour. Games have got much better at doing the spectacular of late, and in truth I'd rather pay for 10 hours of fantastically polished and enthralling gameplay than have one that goes on longer, but has parts that feel like filler.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

It's quite funny that nearly noone knows some details about both consoles (I don't mean in here), but if you look up some numbers, you'll quickly find out that the PS3 should be better (games etcetc). BUT just by looking in some forums, you can find more specific details about both the PS3 and xbox360. Such as, the PS3's GPU (graphics card), guess what? NV47. Is that G o o d [Good]? No, it's just another name for 7800GTX. Maybe they upgraded them already, but at Sone they're just too happy that you buy them for such high prices. Xbox might seem to have much more regular stuff, but they optimized all of them, so they're not as bad as you think they are (they're hell of a load better) and PS3 is not even close to what everyone thinks it is. Same works for the CPU, nice PS3 has more cores (actually it only has 1 main, which is about the same as 1 of the xbox360) and some other cores, which can't process nearly as much memory as the first (they're called SPE's), though they are nearly as fast as the main processor. This information might be a bit old, but it's not outdated since they won't upgrade them. So here is some technical information and what they're both capable off and here is some more information about their GPU's (and more). For the ones that don't know, RSX = PS3's CPU, Xenos is from xbox360. I don't really mind both, and if you want to buy one you should concider if you want much online and what games you like, and technically they're both strong, even for the next years to come. But some people who think the PS3 excells the xbox360 should give it a look, becouse at much points it doesn't, even though it's higher price and better specs.

The point I made is that that is a purely subjective thing. You cannot categorically say that it boils down to the Xbox 360 having more exclusives that everybody cares about. The only one that matters slightly to me is Fable II. I don't know of any other Xbox 360 exclusives that I really want to play.

The only thing worse than beating a dead horse is betting on one.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

From what I've read side by side the same game on both consoles don't look and feel that much different and in some cases the XBOX 360 performs better. I this is mainly due to the tools and the API available to the developer as the PS3 is clearly the winner on paper anyway.

I wish Microsoft didn't charge for a monthly fee for online gaming and netflix. I wish the 360 wasn't so loud. I wish that Natal was out. I wish that Fable III was out. I wish that the unit looked more elegant in my familyroom. I wish it didn't blow up once a year. I wish there were more creative games for it. Other than that it's awesome.

For the PS3 I wish it offered more pizazz (sp). I mean it's great that it doesn't blow up and it's not loud and it looks sleeker and it plays blueray and it's online is free; but where's the thing that makes me really want to buy it?

Neither system has a Killer App yet. Maybe Natal will be it for the 360. Blueray is kind of a killer app for the PS3, but only somewhat.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

I had a similar experience as you as to opting into Xbox or PS3, and what it came down to for me was what were most of my friends playing.  I do wish I had the Blu Ray, but I am really satisfied with social aspect that the 360 has provided.  I have made pals from Britian from these forums - and although the time zone differences require one or both of us playing at odd hours, it has enriched the gaming experience and replay value of a number of the games I have "invested" in.   This may not be an overt pro/con, but at least for me helped in the final decision.

    Here. Big Smile [:D]

I really doubt Natal or PS3 wand will be a huge success. It has to be cheap as hell for most gamers to buy it and the ones that just want casual games with motion sensor stuff already bought a wii. At least i am hoping both will fail horribly.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

The Red Ring problem with the 360 I think was only a problem in the last two years. I think I read somewhere that they have fixed it.
My 360 lasted three years before breaking, took two weeks to send it and get it back free of charge. And the loudness problem of the 360 you honestly don't recognise once you have some sound coming from games/music (or install it to harddrive to quieten it down).

I don't own a PS3 but the only up point with that I found was blue ray (which I don't really care about) and the fact is it free online (but then I found £30 a year not that expensive for the 360 due to more players).

Admittedly I don't know that much about the PS3 though. I went for the 360 because it was a lot cheaper at the time and Fable 2 was exclusive to it Stick out tongue [:P].

I've only ever played on a PS3, and i just felt it was exactly like the Xbox. I haven't tried movies or music on the PS3, so I don't know about that. I know with the Xbox you can link it up with Windows Media Player, which you can then use to play music. But I don't know whether you can do that for the PS3. Just GO COMPARE!!

I already have an HD-DVD player to upscale my DVD movies. I'm not sure if buying an actual Blueray disc would improve the experience that much to justify buying a PS3 or anyother Blueray player. It might be worth it though.

It does seem like the XBOX 360 has more exciting stuff for it right now. The downsides are that it can be loud at times and it breaks.

Have there been any XBOX's that have started on fire?

i would say buy a playstation 3. larger hard drive, you don't have to pay for online play and there's HOME too. i think the exclusives are better than the ones on 360.

if you are into shooters though, get an xbox 360, definitely. the controller for the 360 destroys the playstation's when playing shooters..

    Home is a stupid gimmick.

It's like Xbox Avatars, which is a reason not to buy an Xbox 360, because they're now charging people money to buy virtual clothes for these avatars which right now do nothing other than represent you on friend's lists. Some people are even paying money for it.

Valve really does manage to sound like fanboys every time they talk about consoles. But meh all of their games are not that system heavy and are much better on pc than they will ever be with a controller anyway. Honestly I just think Gabe is angry after he realized that the pic of PS3 having a grill inside of it was photoshopped.

I prefer the 360 overall. Mainly because its online is better and it has a wider variety of games. The PS3 is better for single player games but in my opinion can not match the 360 for multiplayer.

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

Metal Gear Solid - absolutely brilliant game. And easily among the deepest on the market in regards to storyline.

    To fix it further

Xbox 360 is brilliant at accommodating to social online play, providing - and this is absolutely essential in most people's experience I know - that you only allow messages from people on your friends list

While it has many pros, the cons are that it isn't free, and that the community as a whole is extremely immature and spend far too much time screaming racist and homophobic insults at eachother.

a lot of xbox games are tailored to online play

If all you care about is playing online with a G o o d [Good] service, its a winner.

The ps3, looking purely at hardware specifications, is about twice as G o o d [Good] as the xbox (can perform double the amount of raw clculations per ssecond, the 'Core' with 7 processors as opposed to 4, etc etc). It has a much more broad functionality, web browsing, movies, music

xbox's compatibility is limited wheras with a ps3 anything with a usb port goes (or any memory under the sun if you're lucky enough to have the original model)

Online gameplay is lacking compared to xbox, hence being free, but the community is more mature.

'G o o d [Good]' exclusives depends on your taste, so

Halo, Gears of War, vs. Metal Gear Solid, Demon's Souls, Uncharted and so on

If you like broad functionality and con't caer much for online, go for ps3

If you absolutely love online and care not for other features, go with the xbox

Re: Time for a new system -- XBOX 360 or PS3

    Which controller do you prefer?

Personally I find the 360 controller much more ergonomic than the dual shock/six axis.

I own both but I do all my multiplatform gaming on the 360 - I prefer the controller, more of my friends have 360s, there's a history of multiplatform games performing better on the 360 (this is becoming less the case though but it still happens). I also do media streaming from PCs to the 360.

PS3 gets used for PS3 exclusives, watching iplayer on my big ass TV, player DVDs (the upscaler is very nice) and Blu-Rays.

Do you have a PS2? If not they're cheap & have a fantastic range of games. Two of my favourite games I played last year were on it (Persona 3 FES & Persona 4).

All you get in threads like this is fanboys & system owners on each side arguing for the system they own, praising their system's G o o d [Good] points, damning the other's weak points. No matter how eloquently they put their argument across they're still biased.

They're both G o o d [Good] systems, they both have G o o d [Good] exclusives, they both play the same games outside of that. I'd say get both, but that's probably not an option. Find somewhere to try both Smily [:)]
