i have just downloaded audacity but when i play a song on it, it just does a little screech noise what do i do ?

Sounds strange. Try Edit -> Preferences and check if your soundcard is correctly chosen. Of course, close winamp/mediaplayer or any other program that might use your soundcard before starting Audacity.

This Audacity? If so, you're probably better off asking for help on the Audacity forum. You may have a slightly higher chance of getting a useful answer there. When you do, you might want to give some more information to the people there, like which OS you are using, what sound card you have, and what the format of the file is. "X doesn't work, help" is not the most easily answered question there is exactly.

I've actually had this happen to me on a number of occasions. To fix it I unplugged my microphone and did a restart on my computer. Rinse and repeat as necessary.
