    - TM to UT2004 -

The Movies characters, guns, sets, and even cars and flying vehicles, all in UT2004, and later perhaps, UT3 as well.

(If you don't already know what UT is, then to put it in a nutshell it's another 3rd/1st person multiplayer shooter game, much like Halo 2 & above. It has in-game video recording in addition to superb online, lan & single play, and would make action scenes very, very easy for anyone to make for their movies, by recording a video segment in it and making it into overlays.)

Now that I can honestly say I've accomplished the conversions successfully with Blender, I wonder if I can contribute something back to the TMO community by making these mods a reality. But is there a demand? Are there any TM fans who also have UT2004? Is there any interest in networking an online 'action scene', using the TM2UT mod for UT2004?
If there's no demand, I'll only make what I need for my own movies, but I thought that's kinda greedy considering how many other ways I mod my movies.

This would be the perfect solution for someone with no time to learn 3D animation, but wants action & SFX in their movies. So... should I make it? Does anyone here have UT2004 and is interested in using this? Let me know, please.

    Re: - TM to UT2004 -

I'm sure the Sci-fi movie goers would love to have some of these for their sci-fi features.  New fighting animations?  Please!
Would the particle effects, explosions and lasers be transferable too?

    Re: - TM to UT2004 -

I'd make them in UT2004 probably easiest, using the graphics from TM. So... yeah, they'd be almost the same, probably a bit better looking actually.

Not just sci-fi - I have modded in entire sets from TM into UT2004, so they can be used for any era, and match the TM sets exactly. If there's enough people with UT2004 who can use this, that I don't know. UT2004 was down to 10 bucks about a year ago, now that UT3 is out it's probably cheaper. I think it'd be cool to start an online game & get a couple other TM filmmakers to control their avatars in-game to execute a movie plot. A bunch of people could control an entire fleet of ships, or act as spectators at a bank robbery & shootout (with or without rocketlaunchers, blood gibs, etc) on the City Street Set.

If you did it, I'd go out and buy the game.

    Re: - TM to UT2004 -

Obviously it'd be possible to also make things usable for UT3. How much harder would that be?

Even a page a day will get you there.

    Re: - TM to UT2004 -

Tarison, the engine for editing UT2004 & UT3 is essentially the same, just an updated version. I'd have to tweak a few things to get meshes showing up optimally for UT3, and the characters have more segments in their armatures, so I'd have to re-rig them probably, but I don't have UT3 yet.

Well, I have the MiniCity in UT2004 and a few characters already converted - the SWAT cop, wearing a white helmet; a space character, a few variations of this character:

    Thanks

Bongoman I am very interested. I still have my copy of UT2004 and I will gladly reinstall it if you do this. I am currently playing UT3 so I am a big fan of both UT and The Movies.

Awesome stuff. I am still very interested in it. Up []Big Smile [:D]

    Re: - TM to UT2004 -

Skeltch, nice to hear from you. You got UT3, eh? From what I've read in mod threads, it's easier to mod than UT2004. I'd love to get it, but I need another graphics card 1st.

I've just got the hang of it using Blender to extract the TM sets & stuff, but the minicity & a few characters are done. I'm just starting on the citystreet set, which now has me thinking of putting it together with the alleyway & rooftop sets, so there's some serious play/film area.

I also got the minicity in the 'Air Buccaneers' mod if you like that one. I haven't figured out how to add the TM characters to it yet though. Now that I can extract from TM, I want to make a UT2004 level from the devastated minicity, especially for that.

How is UT3? Do you even  want to go back to UT2004? Smily [:)] Is there more space/flight type of levels in it, is it a lot different than UT2004, or essentially the same but better-looking?
    cheers

    Re: - TM to UT2004 -

As far as it being easier to mod, that I could not say as I am not much of a modder. Textures maybe but that is because of much experience working with paint programs through the years.

As far as how UT3 is It is pretty nice, I miss some of the game play from 2004 no maps that make you go and protect or attack different targets like UT2004 did with specific objectives such as flip this switch/ or protect it and such. Instead it has control points that serve the same purpose. I presonally like the more individualized goals of each control map.

Graphics are amazing and the some of the vehicles are right out of George Orwells War of the Worlds with tentacle walkers. If you like UT2004 you will for sure like UT3

Oddly enough there are NO space type missions! Yeah you heard me I was shocked as well.

It is better looking than UT2004 for sure, but in some ways lacking. No space missions and more orb/flag control point oriented.

I still have to admit it is worth the money.

As for your mods I can not wait for those! This will be awesome to make some movies in The Movies using UT3.

    Cheers Big Smile [:D]

    Re: - TM to UT2004 -

Wow, I'm amazed, Skeltch! It's like UT2003 all over again. What is Epic's problem? I bet there will be a fast release of a UT4 or something.

However, it's G o o d [Good] to see that there's a reason to keep using UT2004 heh heh... I'm working on getting TM craft into flyable spaceships in UT2004. From what I've seen in UT threads, I suspect there's going to be a mod that will convert UT2004 levels to UT3 format, just as there was for UT2003 to UT2004. If that's the case, I can focus on UT2004 for now, then use the mod to upgrade the levels to UT3 if there's enough demand.

I've just extracted & retexed the Devastated Minicity Set yesterday afternoon, I'm going to add it into a UT2004 level... at this point, I was thinking of a devastated desrt landscape, sandstorm kinda sky, probably in Onslaught mode so there's every description of vehicle & flight craft... any requests?

I saw you're movie made with this thing, I thought it looked alright but it really destroys the creativity of setting up shots, building tension, doing great camera angles it just turns it into playing a TPS/FPS game...it feels like an excuse to not make a film.

Even thought it looks really cool Smily [:)]

While I hear where your coming from Baloob, its another tool to put in the toolbox for those that care to use it.  I thought Real Estate Agent Smith was done quite well but it was created with these types of animations in mind from the beginning.  I think they can be effective when used in the right situation and in combination with other tools.  While I may not find an immediate use for it myself, I think its cool to see the combination of techniques and people thinking a bit more outside the box.

I just completed converting the Destroyed mincity into a UT2004 level. I even used the skybox from TM for the sky. Here's the 1st version, a deathmatch level, with a TM character.

    Re: - TM to UT2004 -

    Thanks.

I have some net testing to do on these levels & mods if anyone has UT2004 & wants to help out. I guess that will be the deciding factor, if there's people who have it & want to help test for bugs in net play. I'm almost ready to mod in a couple of TM guns, like the shotgun & a pistol, but there's so many custom gun mods for UT2004 I probably won't mod in more than 2.
