My attempts at writing music & creating sound effects for moving picture....

OK, so one of my final uni projects was to create music and all the sound effects for two videos: a film clip and a short animation. The film clip I did was the famous Psycho 'shower scene', and the animation....... I'll leave that as a surprise Wink [;)]

I had awesome fun with the sound effect creation, all the foley sounds were created using a dynamic microphone (NOT a G o o d [Good] idea!) and inventive use of household objects!

View these vids at my Youtube page

Im currently compiling these and a couple of other vids into my showreel in an attempt to get work in the real musical work.

Opinions and (constructive) comments wanted Pleez! ^^ [^^]

Well, the foley sounds were great! They worked well in both the...animation... ( Hmm [^o)] ) and the shower scene. I actually had to go back into this thread and read what your objective was for the assignment...I forgot you'd made them yourself. Stick out tongue [:P] Figured they'd been in the scenes all along, which I suppose is a compliment! Cheeky [:cheeky:]

The music was G o o d [Good]. But the timbre sounded a bit...dated? Stick out tongue [:P] I'm not sure what software you were using but it sounded like old GM sounds. I loved the musical ideas and how it all worked together, apart from one bit which I'll go back and have a look at in a second.
But yeah....sounded like it could have been from Final Fantasy VII. Big Smile [:D] I don't know if that was the style you were going for, but with more realistic sounds it would have sounded amazing! From how you've composed the music though, it's very G o o d [Good]. Loved the guitar bit in the shower scene, although it was a tad repetitive without a whole lot of variation. The effect was fitting and very spooky though. Mixture of chorus and flange? Or was it tremelo...can never quite tell. Hmm [^o)]
Now for the bit that didn't agree with me... *listens* Yeah, it begins at 1:08 in the shower scene, the very high strings....for some reason they don't sound right to me. Stick out tongue [:P] And they end (around 1:30 something) a little strangely. But overall. it all works very well. I like the low continuous hum throughout the scene, and how the wind instrument enters in when the camera is closed in on the eye.
Did you make the sound effects from the animation scene with just your microphone? If so...wow. Stick out tongue [:P]

    Thank you verrry much!

I know what you mean about the psycho strings,Im certain its the quantising vs my *ahem* 'loose' guitar playing(and yes it was chorus/tremWink [;)])! And the ...other one.... strings were Logic EXS24 samples, not the best for a realistic sounding instrument!

And yeah ALL effects (apart from the fire ball in the Fable video (Confused [*-)] ), that was a downloaded sample) were created by meh ^^ [^^] My faves are:

    My balverine impression,

The stabbing sounds (I took a carving knife to a watermelon!)

The gunshot (I inflated then popped a small sandwich bag, added mega processing!)

and the sound of the shower being turned on (my squeaky bedroom doorknob.) Stick out tongue [:P]

.....And finally: Woop woop!My condenser stereo pair mics have just arrived as I wrote this post! no more stupidly quiet signals for me! Big Smile [:D]

So, did you created all sound FX in the Psycho scene yourself or put just the scream in there, I'm a little confused on that from your description?

The music however, I thought it worked perfectly and was building up the right amount of tension up to when he begins to stab her. Personally I would have wished for a change there, because at this point the theme became repetitive which robbed the scene of it's possible impact. Also the music worked itself to much in the foreground, distracting the viewer from what's actually important in the scene.

It’s because they have tried to blend into the world before, and people continue to disappoint them."

Embarrassed [:$]I recorded all the SFX, except the scream. I forgot to mention that. I used the freesound site for that, as I cant scream like a girl.Hmm [^o)] I used a sample off that site, which is why it repeats like 5 times....

Thanks for the comment though, very helpful! Smily [:)]

I just thought Id perform a little necrophilia, and drop a direct link to my latest audio-for-video project: The trailer for The Bourne Ultimatum Hmm [^o)]

The range of effects was a bit more challenging on this one, and couldn't create for locate a G o o d [Good] car engine or tire screech effect for the driving sequence. The only sound not mine is the motorbike.

Im ready for the harsh critisism! Rambo [:rambo:]

Wat do you use to write the music and record the music?  You use a prgram i presume, or do you have an orchestra Stick out tongue [:P]?

The sequencer I use Logic Pro 7, and Battery 3 is my percussion sampler.

I wish had an orchestra! Stick out tongue [:P] Or at least some better sounding samples!
