    Fable 2, new cliches imminent.

If fable 2 is as epic and different as the devs have been making out then we need to pause and think.

Cliches often arise from a G o o d [Good] thing overused to the point where it becomes too tedious to bare. Now there may be a real danger that in the future G o o d [Good] parts of fable 2 will be used to excess, effectively creating new cliches (an oxymoron, yay). Am I the only one who thinks this could happen? Anyone care to discuss?

Re: Fable 2, new cliches imminent.

If fable is going to be as sucsesful as it promices to be, there is no dout that it will be copied. As happens in the music industry.

A band breaks into the market with a new sound, sells loads of records. Hence other record labels find bands with a simular sound. So the market becomes saturated, then along comes something new. So the cycle begins again.

The only difference in the games industry is that things at the moment keep moving forward and theres not much copying of old games. i.e graphics and game play and ways or playing keep changing.

Just enjoy the ride. I cant wait to see what changes in the next 50 years. If I live that long.

    Peace:-)

Now do you mean within Fable 2's gameplay itself or across the board with this genre as a whole?

I think it's a possibility but doubt it will be something used to much that is G o o d [Good] unless it's like Lucien's will tower that is used for G o o d [Good] becomes to powerful then you have to stop it then it makes since that too much G o o d [Good] becomes a downfall so yeah your idea could work after all.Smily [:)]Wink [;)]

I think I know what you mean. Are you saying something like LH includes some funny little aspect to the game, and at first you're thinking "Well this is so cool, funny and original." but then they use it 100 000 times throughout the game and you want to shoot yourself every time you hear it? I don't think so...

Definately. Does anyone ever start to think that choosing the path of G o o d [Good] or E v i l [Evil] is becoming a cliche? I'm not sure which game was the first to have feature this ability, but now it seems every game is including this. Even FPS's. All I can say is, I really don't care to choose the path of G o o d [Good] or E v i l [Evil] in an FPS. I would buy an rpg for that.

Anyway, I think it is just getting repetetive, and overused. It used to be revolutionary, not anymore. Fable II definately will influence how future games turn out because of their new "moral" system, but I hope the concepts in Fable II do not get overused.

I hope this game will be as free of problems as possible.  I know this goes without saying, but Mercenaries 2 was the biggest dissapointment for me in the last three years.  Please Pete,  knock it out of the park,  I need this game to be a masterpiece.Up []

If Fable 2 is truly as awesome as advertised, then I'll be OK with that.

The Sandgoose is an inside joke.

Re: Fable 2, new cliches imminent.

Its human nature to create cliches. Why do you think there is a common word for it, in fact the word Cliche is a cliche, because once it started being used heaps in books and movies everyone started overusing it (and often as it goes... badly), just like always using the term 'irony'... badly, ala that crappy Morresette song.

In the case of any successful thing, people will try to profit from it.

Here is a weird thing for ya... Without cliche there would be no evolution (of philosphy or nature). Things are built on the G o o d [Good] things that came before and copied to nauseum. Smily [:)] Technically the Human appendix is a cliche. Once used with purpose, then over-copied redundantly to the point it has lost its relevance and we have no idea what it does. Stick out tongue [:P]

Fable 2... being a sequel, also based on already overused archetypes/stereotypes and genres, is pretty much a cliche already.

He is talking about the awesome gameplay/ story/whatever elements of fable 2 being seen by other game developers and then being stolen and put into loads of other games. Some examples would be if in 5 years from now 10 games had a morphing system for your character based on your choices, or an expression system with minigames as opposed to actual spoken dialogue.

I don't know how you likened this post to being about the morality system (or whatever you likened it to (couldn't really understand what point you were trying to make) but hopefully this clears it up for you. Up []

Thanks for clearing that up for others before I could return Up []

Where did I say cliches are bad? They're just tedious cop outs instead of using imagination. Some things are built on cliches but remain G o o d [Good] to an extent.

For example if a soldier pulls out a photo of his family you know sometime in the future he is going to die, fact! But it sets a tone of foreboding, and if they are a main character maybe you could still "mourn" them.

By the way cliche is actually a metaphor for a printing technique whereby a plate was engraved with an often used phrase.
