There are two types of avatars you can have and those are static and animated.

A static avatar is one where nothing changes in the image, it remains the same forever.

An animated avatar has an animation in it, hence the name. Examples of animated images are the following smilies:

Typically animated images are either saved in .png or .gif format. The latter is used more often due to the fact that .png images don't show up in every kind of browser.
