    The Banner Size Issue

I have been finding it very distracting to read these forums with so many people who's banners are significantly longer than the one-line posts that they make.  I know this issue came up when the forums first converted to the MS software, but I don't know how thoroughly it was addressed... mostly those who raised concerns felt somewhat ignored if I recall.

I would like to re-open the question of banner size here, and propose that they be limited in size once again;  I'm not asking (though would like) for them to be reduced down to the old limits (dimensions of my own banner and that of a number of oldbies), but I certainly think that something comparable to that size would be quite reasonable, rather than the half-page advertisements that some people's banners have turned into here.

There is just no need for that.  In a room full of 100 people trying to attract the most attention to themselves all you have is a very very unpleasant room to be in.

    Re: The Banner Size Issue

I turned banners off for those reasons.  And now it's been a while, I really don't miss them.  But if I knew they were going to be back under control (and is there an option to see them each only once in a thread, like we used to) then I'd probably turn them on again.

Yeah, this seems to get brought up every so often. I don't think anything has really been done and I have suspicions that it might not even be possible. But hopefully we can get some limitations, some threads really can be a pain to read if certain people have been posting in them.

The only thing worse than beating a dead horse is betting on one.

Your suspicions mirror my own.  Fortunately, though, it is a mutable situation, all things considered.

    Re: The Banner Size Issue

We also wish it were possible to easily limit signature images (both dimensions and file size) and we do make an effort to get ridiculously big ones changed.

Unfortunately this forum software can't do it out of the box and last time we checked there weren't any add-ons that could do it either. I think someone at LH was going to look into it, but we never heard anything after that. Sad [:(]

Firefox users can use Adblock Plus to block out specific banners. I've just - as an experiment (there's nothing wrong with it really) - blocked out only IronLion's banner.

It's easy - right click on the target banner and select Adblock Image then "Add Filter" - that's it.

And if you want it back again, right click on the blank space - do "Adblock Image" again, select "Show Existing Filters" from top right and untick the box for the banner you blocked. Select "Add Filter" and then press refresh to see the banner magically return.

I don't have firefox, but out of interest does it remove the banner, and the space it takes up?  Or just make it so that you can't see the picture.

If the latter it's not quite so useful.

Meh, turning all banners off is definitly the best way, I don't miss them in the slightest Big Smile [:D].

The whole banner and the space it takes up gets removed.

Any further news on this? I've noticed a few big sigs about recently, and at least one animated one that's pushing 2MB. Which is an absolute pain in the bottom when you're browsing on a mobile phone, as I'm sure you're aware more and more people will be doing these days.

Having just signed up after lurking for a while, I was pleased to see the "Display user signatures" option.
Some of the sigs around here are ridiculously large. 2Mb is outrageous!

Yea, the banners do get a little annoying sometimes... :/
