    Demo Reel/Portfolio Q

This is a question for the peeps at BBB: I am a 3d character modeller/texturer and I'm hoping to put together a portfolio in the next 8-10 months. I've read a lot of different things about what companies want to see in a prospective employee's portfolio, and I was wondering whether anyone at Big Blue Box could give some insight into what you are looking for when looking at applications. Also, is 2d sketch work an essential part of any submission, or could someone show their traditional art skills through a different medium (i.e. photos of a character modelled in clay that served as the concept for a char. in 3d)? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work on Ego. Ta, Nick.

I hate to be the squaling bitch, but I really recomend you to use the search engine. For various reasons. Mainly because there is a thread, made by the BBB, about a art position open. http://www.bigbluebox.com:8080/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1754 Go there for more information, official inofrmation.

I was aware of the art position open at BBB, I was just asking about any additional advice about what should/shouldn't be included in a portfolio. I was after secret, juicy hints, see... Ta, Nick.

No secrets. Take their words. Thats exactly what you need in the PF. There are some ppl posting stuff in that thread, and you can see BBB reaction to it, and hints.

niklmaus, It's always hard to suggest what people put in their portfolio, as different companies obviously prefer different things. As a rough guide I'd suggest following the following rules: 1). Only include your best work, if you're not sure or unhappy with a piece don't use it. i.e. if you can't animate then don't. 2). You only really need 5 - 10 images, remember if you score an interview you can always bring more work. 3). Regardless of what type of art position you're going for I would always suggest putting in some 2D work as it's a great indicator of artistic skill. 4). Show a variety of work, it's great if you have a distinctive style but it's highly unlikely a company will be able to use it (unless you get a concepting position). You'll almost certainly be working to someone else’s style so show that you can do that. Of course what you show largely depends upon what you've got but remember your work will be scanned in a few seconds along with many others and if you don't grab someone’s attention you're unlikely to get asked for an interview. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for replying and giving such useful advice. I'll be sure to bear it in mind when I start putting things together. Thanks again, Nick.
