I detest nationalism, I despise the horrors that can be made to happen through its aegis, and even more than that I absolutely hate the unthinking belief that people have in it, especially when it can be reduced to a few buzz-words. Like "Secure our borders" "Defence of marriage" "Dependence on foreign oil" "Islamic millitants" "Islamic terrorists" "Islamic countries" "Enemy". "God bless America." "Freedom isn't free" "These colours don't run".
Due to my annoyance with the word games that the Carl Roves of the world like to make (or should I describe Rove as one of the Goebbels of the world?), I decided to make a list of my own.
Hey the United States is my home. I have a fondness for it because of this. But I don't have to be a blind and ignorant zealot for anything. In fact I refuse to be. So this is a day of celebration and mourning. Celebration of a brave group of people who sought freedom from the abuse and exploitation of imperialists; and mourning because the revolutionaries became new kings (sic) in all but name only.
Love Freedom, love prosperity, love justice, love your home, and love those who are dear to you. Respect and deal fairly with your fellow man. Never use violence except to defend the innocent and those you love. But don't love a government just because they pretend to want everybody to have these things.
