Right, as you all know, Diablo's thread has become a bit outdated, what with the new system and all.
So, kudos to him for making the basis of THIS thread ( I've just copied and pasted basically, and then filled in the missing gaps ).
first follow these three easy steps... steps 1 and 2 should already be complete...
![Wink [;)]](/Emoticons/wink.gif)
1. Own a legal original copy of Black and White.
2. Register a name for the boards which also is a login name for online.
3. Download the v1.2 patch from
KAY'S PLACE and install it.
This is where this thread differs slightly from the original.
Problems
Incorrect Password Problem?
There has been a spate of new threads recently asking about this error. To get rid of it, you need to follow these easy steps.
1. Go to
http://register.lionhead.com
2. Log in.
3. Find the link named '
Review and Update Other Personal Details'
4. Fill in whatever details you feel inclined to provide, but the most important step is here is to find the box under Product Registration, and TICK THE BOX FOR BLACK AND WHITE. I cannot emphasise that enough. So many people just haven't done it
5. Then hit the update button and exit the browser once it confirms your profile has been updated
Now you can play online with the user name and password you just selected.
What ports does it use?
2611 TCP
2612 TCP
6500 TCP
6667 TCP //IRC Chat
27900 TCP
Playing through your 'broadband'
This includes going through another computer on a network, or going through a modem/router via ethernet...
To play an online game through your broadband connection, you may not see your actual connection listed when it comes to connection type. Select Local Area Network as your connection type, and then click to find games on the internet. That should solve that problem.
Not able to connect?
If you have installed SP2 for windows XP, the firewall is turned on by default, and all programs are blocked automatically. The first time you run Black and White and try doing anything network related with it, it will pop up a box asking if you want to allow this program to connect to the internet. You might have to alt-tab out of it in order to click yes.
That of course has the unwanted effect of messing up Black and White on some occasions. You might have to ctrl alt delete and kill the process. Then you can start the game again and it will be unblocked.
If you have a router/modem with an inbuilt firewall, make sure the ports on the above list are not closed. The NAT configuration shouldn't need to be changed, hosting a game of Black and White is not like hosting a server for most modern games.
Installing a new Multiplayer Map ( Taken from -TOURNIQUET- )
When you unzip a map, there can be up to three different types of files. Each of which go into a different location (note that all the paths shown below are based on the default install location for Black and White).
.txt--- There are usually two kinds of .txt files. the first is the ReadMe.txt. Double-click on it to open. This will usually tell you where to place the files, as well as other interesting things about the map that the author wants you to know. The other .txt file is the map. Copy this file to your C:\Program Files\Lionhead Studios\Black and White\Scripts\Playgrounds folder.
.lnd --- These are special landscapes that some maps need to play on They are usually placed in the C:\Program Files\Lionhead Studios\Black and white\data\landscape\Multi_Player folder. It's best to check the ReadMe.txt file for the proper location. Failing that, open the map in Notepad and the location will be on of the first lines in the map, like this: LOAD_LANDSCAPE(".\DATA\LANDSCAPE\MULTI_PLAYER\Omens Training Grounds.lnd").
Files without an extension
Like Tegenstein in Kilroy's Training grounds. These are creature mind files and are to be placed in the C:\Program Files\Lionhead Studios\Black and White\Scripts\CreatureMind folder\.
And back to diablo's post...
Now thats done you would normally go straight online and expect to find loads of games....but you are very, very wrong. The BnW MP (Black and White Muliplayer) died down a while back and you'll very very seldomly find a game that easily.
Finding People to play with
Here are the next 3 easy steps which will help you to organise yourself a game.
1. Go to
http://messenger.msn.co.uk/ and download MSN Messenger
2. Check out the
MSN CONTACT THREAD for further details and get some contacts.
3. Try and organize a game with your new found contacts.
Now you'll probably find that it still might be difficult to find someone who's up for a game so always check out the most recent posts on the
MSN CONTACT THREAD because most probably those will be the people wanting to play as they will be new to the MP (Multiplayer) scene.
Now....online playing of BnW can sometimes be a nasty horrible place. What you need to know next is...
Online Etiquette:
Rule Clarification: Before beginning an online game, you will enter a waiting room where players can talk to each other. This is the place where you can clarify rules and decide if any of the cheats will be accepted in the game or not. Abiding by the rules is necessary for a fun game.
Winning: If you win a game it's alright to be happy about it, but never rub the losers face in it. Remember, this is supposed to be fun.
Losing: If you lose, don't yell "Cheater!" or curse them out. Again, it's supposed to be fun. If you lose accept it and show good sportsmanship
You may ask to yourselves..."but what are these rules you speak of?"... this I will tell you in the next section which is...
Rules and conditions of online play:
Normally the channel host tells everyone in the room a set of rules before the game starts. If everyone agrees the game starts, if not the host either kicks you or you guys work on the rules until all our happy. The list of conditions or rules are as follows....
Reaching: When reaching is allowed it means you can reach way outside your influence beyond the normal reach limit and grab things,ie miracle seeds. Or drop things into a town. If No Reaching is said that means this condition isn't allowed.
Drops: Drops mean your allowed to drop village centers (V.C) around the map to gain small bits of influence around the map, making influencing, miracle casting and reaching easier. No Drops means you can't use village centers to extend your influence.
Rushing: If allowed rushing lets you attack your oppentents villages and temple at the begginning of the game straight away. No Rushing means you can not attack at the beginning of the game and you need to convert villages frist.
MB Hill: If allowed you are allowed to try and take the MB hill on bombarment. No MB Hill Means that the hill is off limits and you can't convert it.
Firerocks: If allowed you can hurl firerocks at the enemies temple aswell as their villages. No Firerocks means you can't throw firerocks in the game.
Also a rule that is nearly always imposed and works with the no rushing rule is NO ATTACK UNTIL X amount OF VILLAGES ARE CONVERTED. This means you can not attack the enemy until you have that number of villages converted and thats not including the ones you start with.
Finally as a little start to helping you on your way is some little helpers about the bombardment map which is the most commonly used map in MP (multiplayer)...Giffy wrote this for the BnW Council site a while back...anyway..the final section...
Bombardment Map:
Description of Map: This is the most used one versus one game level. It is a long map with many tribes. When you start out, whether you are on green or red, you will have a town just in front of your temple, with a village to the left and right of you. There will be a small town center also in your influence without any people in it, and if you do not populate it soon with at least one person, it will become neutral and you will have to add a person to it to convert it. There will be a town in the center of the level, which is a strategic point of the level that most players want to get. There is also a hill on the map which holds a mega blast miracle dispenser.
Strategy: There are many ways to go about this game, this will explain the way to play if you want to bypass the mega blast hill (believe me, you can win without it). The following is also from Red's point of view, but if you are green, just do the opposite. You start off with 2 towns, so immediately add one villager to your unpopulated town. Then, take your creature and use the learning leash to attach him to the middle neutral villages town center. Using the learning leash will make him begin converting it. You can leave him alone for now. Go to the village to your left. It is not under your control but you're about to get it. Reach into the town and take a flock, casting it over the heads of the unconverted villagers. Next, take a tree from the neutral town, and throw it into their village store. Do this again with one more tree. If you zoom in on your town with one villager in it, you will see some sheep. Take one and throw it over their heads into their village store. Do it again with one more sheep and the village should be yours.
Next, take the remaining flock, and go to the neutral village to your right, and repeat the steps listed. You should convert that village too. If not, keep throwing in trees/animals until it is converted. By now your creature will be almost done converting, if you want, you can help him by throwing in more items to the village store, or throwing fireballs at them. Soon you will have that village converted. You are that much closer to your opponent. Just use any aggressive tactics you can to destroy him. You can do anything from throwing in fireballs to using your creature to attack his temple. Soon you should have the game won, but you should never underestimate your opponent, they may have something up their sleeves.
I have no idea what I am talking about
