Not sure you have to raise the stars to raise the value of the house.  Adding nicer furniture does it.  Also you dont have to do all the quests before you do the final main quests... You can do them after if you like.  Just dont choose to sacrifice your family and dog in the end because some quests need the dog for you to find what ...

Ability to dress your family! I agree on the house decor too. Abiltiy to find your spouse when it says they are happy and in the town where they reside but you cant find them! Abilty to see people and your dog up close is huge too... AND ability to earn another dog if you decided to do Sacrifice at the end of the main quest. Ability to back out
