Most of our tools are C# these days, it interfaces well with DirectX so there's no real issues with performance.
Whether the tools guys use any fancy extra API helpers or code straight down into the windows API I don't know, but I suspect the former.

You're in luck, in that the two roles you're interested in there don't really require specialist *game industry specific* training.

It's not illegal to kill kids in a videogame, but it does mean you'll get an 'AO' rating from the ESRB. And that means you won't sell many copies, cause most US stores won't carry anything with the 'AO' rating.

I've recently finished Uncharted 2, and it's fantastic in almost every way possible.
Demon's Souls is kicking my backside pretty hard and I'm not sure how long I'll persevere with it.
Still rinsing out the last few achievements in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 (mindless smashing things is sometimes all I want to do after a day at work).

All time favourite? Probably Xenogears, with Final Fantasy Tactics a close second.
For this year, I'd say it's currently between Uncharted 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum.
